Oasis explosion and cycles conflicts: territorial transformations of Djerid y Nefzaoua oasis (South Tunisia).
The investigation drives an analysis of water cycles conflicts concerning the oasis-settlements within the Djerid and Nefzaoua regions. From the large geological timescale originating the artesian water sources leading to the genesis of the traditional oasis, till the high productive cycles of the last 70 years exploiting new water resources and radically transforming the metabolic model of the territory. If the traditional oasis does permit a self-sufficient organization, limiting its production capacity, imposing a model of settlement braced with the palm groves, with the development of deep water-wells, the modern oasis transfigures the cycles constancy. We’re watching the traditional oasis exploding. The palm grove is detached from the settlement, the constituted traditional production model is being turned to a monoculture of the Phœnix dactylifera, the palm tree producing dates, highly demanded in the international market. By its dependence on waters extracted from deep aquifers generating cycles conflicts with the groundwater, the oasis is entering into an era of a planned obsolescence, its future will rely on territorial strategies that shall integrated the complexity of its metabolism
The millet route: understanding a cultural landscape: reactivation strategies for the cultural landscape of Dogon country, Mali
The present study proposes to demonstrate the following hypothesis: there are unique tools, such as Cultural
routes and Local Development Planning, which can be used to reactivate a region and that allow both local and
touristic activities to coexist without endangering local identity and heritage.
The study of these societies, their connection with their own heritage, and their adaptation to the landscape can
provide an essential perspective that may help redefine the way we interact with our surroundings.
The main goal of this investigation is to come closer to a better understanding of Landscape, Tangible and
Intangible Heritage, essential principals and values of Moptis Region in Dogon Country. Fundamentally, to
achieve a criteria matrix that supports the articulation of any proposal to the place.
We proposed as an instrument of territorial management and organisation, a cultural route with the name Millet
Route, and intendeds minimal interference to achieve maximum benefit.Peer Reviewe

The investigation is proposing to reveal the global features of territories that at first look could be contemplated as totally isolated from the world map. Through a multiscale approach, the aim is to express the strong connections of Djerid and Nefzaoua territories always had with the world. An analytic grid contemplating three timescales, expressly the millenary, the centenary and the decadal oasis, is enabling an original approach. Toward the construction of a panoramic picture of these territories, contributions of different disciplines are combined, including archaeology, geography, history, literature, geology, hydrology and social sciences. The focus is placed on the multiples relations of the territory with the world from the large geological timescale originating the natural water sources which gave rise of traditional oasis, until the recent productive cycles causing the explosion of the oasis-settlement driven by the impulse of date fruit international export and the touristic industry development

Workshop Tunisie
