Androgen Receptor and Vasopressin Receptor (AVPR1a) Genetic Polymorphisms are not associated with Marital Status or Fertility among Ariaal Men of Northern Kenya
A growing body of scholarship implicates testosterone and vasopressin in male reproductive behavior, including in humans. Since hormones exert their effects through their respective receptors, an open question has been whether genetic polymorphisms in the androgen receptor and vasopressin 1a receptor (AVPR1a) impact human male social behavior. Here, we sought to test for associations between polymorphisms in the coding region of the androgen receptor and promoter region of AVPR1a in relation to marital status and fertility among pastoralist Ariaal men of northern Kenya. None of the three polymorphisms were related to marital status (single, monogamously married, polygynously married) or fertility (number of current living children). We discuss these null findings in light of existing data
Projection of two biphoton qutrits onto a maximally entangled state
Bell state measurements, in which two quantum bits are projected onto a
maximally entangled state, are an essential component of quantum information
science. We propose and experimentally demonstrate the projection of two
quantum systems with three states (qutrits) onto a generalized maximally
entangled state. Each qutrit is represented by the polarization of a pair of
indistinguishable photons - a biphoton. The projection is a joint measurement
on both biphotons using standard linear optics elements. This demonstration
enables the realization of quantum information protocols with qutrits, such as
teleportation and entanglement swapping.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, published versio
The nucleus as a fluid of skyrmions: Energy levels and nucleon properties in the medium
A model of a fluid of skyrmions coupled to a scalar and to the \o meson
mean fields is developed. The central and spin-orbit potentials of a skyrmion
generated by the fields predict correct energy levels in selected closed shell
nuclei. The effect of the meson fields on the properties of skyrmions in nuclei
is investigated.Comment: Latex format, 6 figures, Journal of Physics G, to be publishe
Regular expressions as violin bowing patterns
String players spend a significant amount of practice time creating and learning bowings. These may be indicated in the music using up-bow and down-bow symbols, but those traditional notations do not capture the complex bowing patterns that are latent within the music. Regular expressions, a mathematical notation for a simple class of formal languages, can describe precisely the bowing patterns that commonly arise in string music. A software tool based on regular expressions enables performers to search for passages that can be handled with similar bowings, and to edit them consistently. A computer-based music editor incorporating bowing patterns has been implemented, using Lilypond to typeset the music. Our approach has been evaluated by using the editor to study ten movements from six violin sonatas by W. A. Mozart. Our experience shows that the editor is successful at finding passages and inserting bowings; that relatively complex patterns occur a number of times; and that the bowings can be inserted automatically and consistently
Assortative human pair-bonding for partner ancestry and allelic variation of the dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) gene
The 7R allele of the dopamine receptor D4 gene has been associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and risk taking. On the cross-population scale, 7R allele frequencies have been shown to be higher in populations with more of a history of long-term migrations. It has also been shown that the 7R allele is associated with individuals having multiple-ancestries. Here we conduct a replication of this latter finding with two independent samples. Measures of subjects’ ancestry are used to examine past reproductive bonds. The individuals’ history of inter-racial/ancestral dating and their feelings about this are also assessed. Tentative support for an association between multiple ancestries and the 7R allele were found. These results are dependent upon the method of questioning subjects about their ancestries. Inter-racial dating and feelings about inter-racial pairing were not related to the presence of the 7R allele. This might be accounted for by secular trends that might have substantively altered the decision-making process employed when considering relationships with individuals from different groups. This study provides continued support for the 7R allele playing a role in migration and/or mate choice patterns. However, replications and extensions of this study are needed and must carefully consider how ancestry/race is assessed
Clearing algorithms and network centrality
I show that the solution of a standard clearing model commonly used in
contagion analyses for financial systems can be expressed as a specific form of
a generalized Katz centrality measure under conditions that correspond to a
system-wide shock. This result provides a formal explanation for earlier
empirical results which showed that Katz-type centrality measures are closely
related to contagiousness. It also allows assessing the assumptions that one is
making when using such centrality measures as systemic risk indicators. I
conclude that these assumptions should be considered too strong and that, from
a theoretical perspective, clearing models should be given preference over
centrality measures in systemic risk analyses
Thermodynamics of two lattice ice models in three dimensions
In a recent paper we introduced two Potts-like models in three dimensions,
which share the following properties: (A) One of the ice rules is always
fulfilled (in particular also at infinite temperature). (B) Both ice rules hold
for groundstate configurations. This allowed for an efficient calculation of
the residual entropy of ice I (ordinary ice) by means of multicanonical
simulations. Here we present the thermodynamics of these models. Despite their
similarities with Potts models, no sign of a disorder-order phase transition is
found.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure
