Expectations in Relationships
Expectations between the sexes seldom meet up when it comes to relationships. Or so we thought. Read what two Ethos staffers have to say on the subject. Bradley Cooper, Channing Tatum and Ryan Gosling: Three attractive men you may never meet. If you do happen to meet any of them, some of you may freak out. These chiseled men are the standard to which some women hold every man they meet. Both sexes have internal wiring telling them to satiate their hunger for physical contact
Who Do You Think You Are? Richard Deyo
Surely one of the most well-known citizens of Ames, Richard Deyo separates himself with one key detail: no one knows him by name, but rather “skirt man” or “Santa.” We spent some time with Richard to get his full story, here’s the first glance.
A question-and-answer column with Richard Deyo
The Truth About Feminism
Thee person sitting next to you in class, the girl sharing your booth at the Hub, a man sitting across the table from you at Parks Library and your professor in Civil Engineering—all of these people can be feminists. A woman who takes pride in being a female or a man that wants his girlfriend to make the same amount of money that he does can be a feminist
Catfish: Campus Edition
Like a relationship superhero, technology can save you from the embarrassment of getting shut down by the hottie in your chem class. Instead, you can friend your crush on Facebook and make not-sosubtle hints as to your romantic intentions. But what happens when the hero turns out to be the villain
Breaking Barriers: Racism @ Iowa State
Let’s take a stride through the stained history of America together. Imagine skipping through your last history textbook—the cover is hard and thick, a little worn on the edges and the thin plastic casing is engraved with scratches and marks from past owners. The books are worn because of the idealism behind learning history—that those who learn history will not repeat it
What Not to Say to a Bartender
Sweaty and red in the face, you push your way through the thick and rest your arms on the bar. You’re not alone. In fact, you’re last in a queue of seven people, all fighting their way to their own taste of oblivion in a cup. Bars get busy, making it hard to catch the attention of the bartenders. But fear not, for the manual of jollification is here to save you. (Would you expect anything less?) We talked to Paddy’s bartender Joe Hughes to find out what irks him the most, therein what not to do, or say, to a bartender
Spice Up Your Pregame
Pregame getting a little stale? Fear no more, we’ve compiled a list of drinking activities more exciting than the classic fall-back Ring of Fire to amp up your weekend (or week) nights
Conjugacy of local homeomorphisms via groupoids and C*-algebras
We investigate dynamical systems consisting of a locally compact Hausdorff
space equipped with a partially defined local homeomorphism. Important examples
of such systems include self-covering maps, one-sided shifts of finite type
and, more generally, the boundary-path spaces of directed and topological
graphs. We characterise topological conjugacy of these systems in terms of
isomorphisms of their associated groupoids and C*-algebras. This significantly
generalises recent work of Matsumoto and of the second- and third-named
authors.Comment: 19 pages. This version matches the version in Ergodic Theory and
