    Absolute differential cross sections for electron-impact excitation of CO near threshold: II. The Rydberg states of CO

    Absolute differential cross sections for electron-impact excitation of Rydberg states of CO have been measured from threshold to 3.7 eV above threshold and for scattering angles between 20° and 140°. Measured excitation functions for the b 3Σ+, B 1Σ+ and E 1π states are compared with cross sections calculated by the Schwinger multichannel method. The behaviour of the excitation functions for these states and for the j 3Σ+ and C 1Σ+ states is analysed in terms of negative-ion states. One of these resonances has not been previously reported

    Combined investigation of water sorption on TiO2TiO_2 rutile (1 1 0) single crystal face: XPS vs. periodic DFT

    XPS and periodic DFT calculations have been used to investigate water sorption on the TiO2 rutile (1 1 0) face. Two sets of XPS spectra were collected on the TiO2 (1 1 0) single crystal clean and previously exposed to water: the first set with photoelectrons collected in a direction parallel to the normal to the surface; and the second set with the sample tilted by 70°, respectively. This tilting procedure promotes the signals from surface species and reveals that the first hydration layer is strongly coordinated to the surface and also that, despite the fact that the spectra were recorded under ultra-high vacuum, water molecules subsist in upper hydration layers. In addition, periodic DFT calculations were performed to investigate the water adsorption process to determine if molecular and/or dissociative adsorption takes place. The first step of the theoretical part was the optimisation of a dry surface model and then the investigation of water adsorption. The calculated molecular water adsorption energies are consistent with previously published experimental data and it appears that even though it is slightly less stable, the dissociative water sorption can also take place. This assumption was considered, in a second step, on a larger surface model where molecular and dissociated water molecules were adsorbed together with different ratio. It was found that, due to hydrogen bonding stabilisation, molecular and dissociated water molecules can coexist on the surface if the ratio of dissociated water molecules is less than ≈33%. These results are consistent with previous experimental works giving a 10–25% range

    NOXA as critical mediator for drug combinations in polychemotherapy

    During polychemotherapy, cytotoxic drugs are given in combinations to enhance their anti-tumor effectiveness. For most drug combinations, underlying signaling mechanisms responsible for positive drug–drug interactions remain elusive. Here, we prove a decisive role for the Bcl-2 family member NOXA to mediate cell death by certain drug combinations, even if drugs were combined which acted independently from NOXA, when given alone. In proof-of-principle studies, betulinic acid, doxorubicin and vincristine induced cell death in a p53- and NOXA-independent pathway involving mitochondrial pore formation, release of cytochrome c and caspase activation. In contrast, when betulinic acid was combined with either doxorubicine or vincristine, cell death signaling changed considerably; the drug combinations clearly depended on both p53 and NOXA. Similarly and of high clinical relevance, in patient-derived childhood acute leukemia samples the drug combinations, but not the single drugs depended on p53 and NOXA, as shown by RNA interference studies in patient-derived cells. Our data emphasize that NOXA represents an important target molecule for combinations of drugs that alone do not target NOXA. NOXA might have a special role in regulating apoptosis sensitivity in the complex interplay of polychemotherapy. Deciphering the differences in signaling of single drugs and drug combinations might enable designing highly effective novel polychemotherapy regimens

    We study the Potts model on locally tree-like random graphs of arbitrary degree distribution. Using a population dynamics algorithm we numerically solve the problem exactly. We confirm our results with simulations.     Correlations in interacting systems with a network topology

    We study pair correlations in cooperative systems placed on complex networks. We show that usually in these systems, the correlations between two interacting objects (e.g., spins), separated by a distance \ell, decay, on average, faster than 1/(z)1/(\ell z_\ell). Here zz_\ell is the mean number of the \ell-th nearest neighbors of a vertex in a network. This behavior, in particular, leads to a dramatic weakening of correlations between second and more distant neighbors on networks with fat-tailed degree distributions, which have a divergent number z2z_2 in the infinite network limit. In this case, only the pair correlations between the nearest neighbors are observable. We obtain the pair correlation function of the Ising model on a complex network and also derive our results in the framework of a phenomenological approach.Comment: 5 page

    Integrating HDAd5/35++ vectors as a new platform for HSC gene therapy of hemoglobinopathies

    We generated an integrating, CD46-targeted, helper-dependent adenovirus HDAd5/35++ vector system for hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) gene therapy. The ∼12-kb transgene cassette included a β-globin locus control region (LCR)/promoter driven human γ-globin gene and an elongation factor alpha-1 (EF1α)-mgmtP140K expression cassette, which allows for drug-controlled increase of γ-globin-expressing erythrocytes. We transduced bone marrow lineage-depleted cells from human CD46-transgenic mice and transplanted them into lethally irradiated recipients. The percentage of γ-globin-positive cells in peripheral blood erythrocytes in primary and secondary transplant recipients was stable and greater than 90%. The γ-globin level was 10%–20% of adult mouse globin. Transgene integration, mediated by a hyperactive Sleeping Beauty SB100x transposase, was random, without a preference for genes. A second set of studies was performed with peripheral blood CD34+ cells from mobilized donors. 10 weeks after transplantation of transduced cells, human cells were harvested from the bone marrow and differentiated ex vivo into erythroid cells. Erythroid cells expressed γ-globin at a level of 20% of adult α-globin. Our studies suggest that HDAd35++ vectors allow for efficient transduction of long-term repopulating HSCs and high-level, almost pancellular γ-globin expression in erythrocytes. Furthermore, our HDAd5/35++ vectors have a larger insert capacity and a safer integration pattern than currently used lentivirus vectors

    Complete Break Up of Ortho Positronium (Ps)- Hydrogenic ion System

    The dynamics of the complete breakup process in an Ortho Ps - He+ system including electron loss to the continuum (ELC) is studied where both the projectile and the target get ionized. The process is essentially a four body problem and the present model takes account of the two centre effect on the electron ejected from the Ps atom which is crucial for a proper description of the ELC phenomena. The calculations are performed in the framework of Coulomb Distorted Eikonal Approximation. The exchange effect between the target and the projectile electron is taken into account in a consistent manner. The proper asymptotic 3-body boundary condition for this ionization process is also satisfied in the present model. A distinct broad ELC peak is noted in the fully differential cross sections (5DCS) for the Ps electron corroborating qualitatively the experiment for the Ps - He system. Both the dynamics of the ELC from the Ps and the ejected electron from the target He+ in the FDCS are studied using coplanar geometry. Interesting features are noted in the FDCS for both the electrons belonging to the target and the projectile.Comment: 14 pages,7 figure

    Persistence of a Continuous Stochastic Process with Discrete-Time Sampling: Non-Markov Processes

    We consider the problem of `discrete-time persistence', which deals with the zero-crossings of a continuous stochastic process, X(T), measured at discrete times, T = n(\Delta T). For a Gaussian Stationary Process the persistence (no crossing) probability decays as exp(-\theta_D T) = [\rho(a)]^n for large n, where a = \exp[-(\Delta T)/2], and the discrete persistence exponent, \theta_D, is given by \theta_D = \ln(\rho)/2\ln(a). Using the `Independent Interval Approximation', we show how \theta_D varies with (\Delta T) for small (\Delta T) and conclude that experimental measurements of persistence for smooth processes, such as diffusion, are less sensitive to the effects of discrete sampling than measurements of a randomly accelerated particle or random walker. We extend the matrix method developed by us previously [Phys. Rev. E 64, 015151(R) (2001)] to determine \rho(a) for a two-dimensional random walk and the one-dimensional random acceleration problem. We also consider `alternating persistence', which corresponds to a < 0, and calculate \rho(a) for this case.Comment: 14 pages plus 8 figure

    First Model-Independent Measurement of the Spin Triplet pΛp\Lambda Scattering Length from Final State Interaction in the pppK+Λ\vec{p}p \rightarrow pK^{+}\Lambda Reaction

    The pppK+Λ\vec{p}p \rightarrow pK^{+}\Lambda reaction has been measured with the COSY-TOF detector at a beam momentum of 2.7GeV/c2.7\,\mathrm{GeV}/c. The polarized proton beam enables the measurement of the beam analyzing power by the asymmetry of the produced kaon (ANKA_N^{K}). This observable allows the pΛp\Lambda spin triplet scattering length to be extracted for the first time model independently from the final-state interaction in the reaction. The obtained value is at=(2.551.39+0.72stat.±0.6syst.±0.3theo.)fma_{t} = (-2.55 ^{+0.72}_{-1.39} {}_{\textrm{stat.}} \pm 0.6_{\textrm{syst.}} \pm 0.3_{\textrm{theo.}})\mathrm{fm}. This value is compatible with theoretical predictions and results from model-dependent analyses.Comment: Revised version as accepted for publication in PR
