Polyamine levels in gynecologic malignancies.
Polyamines are closely related to many aspects of cell growth. Since increased amounts of polyamines in the urine of human cancer patients were reported in 1971, polyamines have been studied from the standpoint of tumor markers. In this study, polyamines in erythrocytes, plasma and urine were determined in 42 controls and 105 patients with gynecologic malignant tumors. The changes in polyamine levels were investigated before and after treatment. With advances in the stage of uterine cervical cancer, the frequency of abnormal levels of polyamines (concentrations greater than two standard deviations above the mean control level) became greater, and reached nearly 80% in recurrent and ovarian cancer. In the early stage of cancer, the diagnostic value was low. Comparison with carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was also performed. The polyamines lack specificity for malignant diseases, but they can be used to some extent as a tumor marker in the gynecologic field.</p
『日本語歴史コーパス(CHJ)』の教育利用の実践報告 : 高校の古典の授業における活用例

Brazilian Propolis Suppresses Angiogenesis by Inducing Apoptosis in Tube-Forming Endothelial Cells through Inactivation of Survival Signal ERK1/2
We recently reported that propolis suppresses tumor-induced angiogenesis through tube formation inhibition and apoptosis induction in endothelial cells. However, molecular mechanisms underlying such angiogenesis suppression by propolis have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ethanol extract of Brazilian propolis (EEBP) on two major survival signals, extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and Akt, and to elucidate whether changes in these signals were actually involved in antiangiogenic effects of the propolis. Detection by western blotting revealed that EEBP suppressed phosphorylation of ERK1/2, but not that of Akt. Pharmacological inhibition by U0126 demonstrated that ERK1/2 inactivation alone was enough to inhibit tube formation and induce apoptosis. It was also shown that EEBP and U0126 similarly induced activation of caspase-3 and cleavage of poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) and lamin A/C, all of which are molecular markers of apoptosis. These results indicate that inhibition of survival signal ERK1/2, and subsequent induction of apoptosis, is a critical mechanism of angiogenesis suppression by EEBP
Bright X-ray flares from the BL Lac object Mrk 421, detected with MAXI in 2010 January and February
Strong X-ray flares from the blazar Mrk 421 were detected in 2010 January and
February through the 7 month monitoring with the MAXI GSC. The maximum 2 -- 10
keV flux in the January and February flares was measured as 120 +- 10 mCrab and
164 +- 17 mCrab respectively; the latter is the highest among those reported
from the object. A comparison of the MAXI and Swift BAT data suggests a convex
X-ray spectrum with an approximated photon index of about 2. This spectrum is
consistent with a picture that MAXI is observing near the synchrotron peak
frequency. The source exhibited a spectral variation during these flares,
slightly different from those in the previous observations, in which the
positive correlation between the flux and hardness was widely reported. By
equating the halving decay timescale in the January flare, s, to the synchrotron cooling time, the magnetic field was
evaluated as B = 0.045 G , where is the jet
beaming factor. Assuming that the light crossing time of the emission region is
shorter than the doubling rise time, s,
the region size was roughly estimated as cm
. These are consistent with the values previously reported. For
the February flare, the rise time, s, gives a
loose upper limit on the size as cm ,
although the longer decay time s, indicates
B = 0.015 G , which is weaker than the previous results.
This could be reconciled by invoking a scenario that this flare is a

MAXI GSC observations of a spectral state transition in the black hole candidate XTE J1752-223
We present the first results on the black hole candidate XTE J1752-223 from
the Gas Slit Camera (GSC) on-board the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) on
the International Space Station. Including the onset of the outburst reported
by the Proportional Counter Array on-board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer on
2009 October 23, the MAXI/GSC has been monitoring this source approximately 10
times per day with a high sensitivity in the 2-20 keV band. XTE J1752-223 was
initially in the low/hard state during the first 3 months. An anti-correlated
behavior between the 2-4 keV and 4-20 keV bands were observed around January
20, 2010, indicating that the source exhibited the spectral transition to the
high/soft state. A transient radio jet may have been ejected when the source
was in the intermediate state where the spectrum was roughly explained by a
power-law with a photon index of 2.5-3.0. The unusually long period in the
initial low/hard state implies a slow variation in the mass accretion rate, and
the dramatic soft X-ray increase may be explained by a sudden appearance of the
accretion disk component with a relatively low innermost temperature (0.4-0.7
keV). Such a low temperature might suggest that the maximum accretion rate was

The MAXI Mission on the ISS: Science and Instruments for Monitoring All Sky X-Ray Images
The MAXI (Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image) mission is the first astronomical
payload to be installed on the Japanese Experiment Module-Exposed Facility
(JEM-EF) on the ISS. It is scheduled for launch in the middle of 2009 to
monitor all-sky X-ray objects on every ISS orbit. MAXI will be more powerful
than any previous X-ray All Sky Monitor (ASM) payloads, being able to monitor
hundreds of AGN. MAXI will provide all sky images of X-ray sources of about 20
mCrab in the energy band of 2-30 keV from observation on one ISS orbit (90
min), about 4.5 mCrab for one day, and about 1 mCrab for one month. A final
detectability of MAXI could be 0.2 mCrab for 2 year observations.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Publications of the

Malfunctioning CD106-positive, short-term hematopoietic stem cells trigger diabetic neuropathy in mice by cell fusion.
Diabetic neuropathy is an incurable disease. We previously identified a mechanism by which aberrant bone marrow-derived cells (BMDCs) pathologically expressing proinsulin/TNF-α fuse with residential neurons to impair neuronal function. Here, we show that CD106-positive cells represent a significant fraction of short-term hematopoietic stem cells (ST-HSCs) that contribute to the development of diabetic neuropathy in mice. The important role for these cells is supported by the fact that transplantation of either whole HSCs or CD106-positive ST-HSCs from diabetic mice to non-diabetic mice produces diabetic neuronal dysfunction in the recipient mice via cell fusion. Furthermore, we show that transient episodic hyperglycemia produced by glucose injections leads to abnormal fusion of pathological ST-HSCs with residential neurons, reproducing neuropathy in nondiabetic mice. In conclusion, we have identified hyperglycemia-induced aberrant CD106-positive ST-HSCs underlie the development of diabetic neuropathy. Aberrant CD106-positive ST-HSCs constitute a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy
Contribution of platelet-derived microRNAs to serum microRNAs in healthy men
Platelets are a major source of microRNAs (miRNAs) in blood. Relationships between circulating platelet-derived miRNAs were investigated to elucidate their significance as biomarkers. Total miRNAs in serum were analyzed using the 3D-Gene miRNA Oligo chip. Among 22 miRNAs that are included in platelets and play functional roles, sufficient miRNA levels for comparison were detected for 11 miRNAs (let-7b-5p, miR-16–5p, miR-17–5p, miR-24–3p, miR-107, miR-126–3p, miR-150–3p, miR-191–5p, miR-197–3p, miR-223–3p, and miR-326). Among 55 pairs prepared by these miRNAs, relatively strong correlations (Spearman’s correlation coefficient >0.8) were shown between miRNAs of 7 pairs including let-7b-5p and miR-16-5p, let-7b-5p and miR-17-5p, let-7b-5p and miR-107, miR-16–5p and miR-17-5p, miR-16-5p and miR-107, miR-17-5p and miR-107, and miR-107 and miR-126-3p. In principal component analysis, the first principal component consisted of let-7b-5p, miR-16-5p, miR-17-5p, miR-107, miR-126–3p, and miR-191-5p. These six miRNAs may be useful biomarkers that reflect platelet condition and function
