SPACE LEXICALIZATION IN COMPOSITIONS BY INDONESIAN EFL LEARNERS: TOWARD NEAR-NATIVE STYLE

    Get PDF
This research intends to find out whether or not Indonesian EFL learners are aware of the presence of “space” and lexicalize it in their English compositions. It  takes  21  seventh-semester  English  Department  students  as  research  subjects. They are given story pictures and asked to write a narrative.  The resulting 21 EFL narratives are measured against a native-speaker narrative model in terms of “spatial words” (prepositions and adverbial particles), producing the following comparisons: 6.6% : 7.2% in total, 78.2% : 85.7% used dynamically, 95.5% : 100% used obligato-rily, and 19.2% : 28.6% used in phrasal verbs.   This means that Indonesian EFL learners are sensitive enough to “space” and know how to lexicalize it in their com- positions.  Theoretically, their sensitivity to “space” implies that while learning Eng- lish they have undergone some cognitive restructuring; and practically, EFL learners who wish to acquire near-native style in writing should be competent in space lexi- calization

Verbal Humor: a Salient Case in Translation and Translatability

    Get PDF
Abstract: This article aims to answer the following research question: are jokes and puns translatable? Using a linguistic approach and collecting relevant data (i.e., jokes and puns in Indonesian and English), this article tries to investigate their translatability. A thorough linguistic analysis shows that there are two kinds of verbal humor: logic-twisting humor and ambiguity-manipulating humor. Verbal humor of the first type is in general translatable; for the translation is an act of rendering meaning. Conversely, verbal humor of the second type is typically untranslatable; for the translation is an act of rendering double correspondence: both form and meaning.

Linguistic Relativity, Cultural Relativity, and Foreign Language Teaching

    Get PDF
Every language is assumed to be unique, structurally and culturally. Taking this neo-Bloomfieldian assumption at the outset, this paper first points out the inadequacy of sentence grammars for foreign language teaching. Toward this end, the paper further argues for the necessity of understanding linguistic and cultural relativity. Linguistic relativity, or better known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, suggests that the way we perceive and categorize reality is partly determined by the language we speak; and cultural relativity implies that verbalization of concepts in a particular language is often culturally conditioned. As related to the field of foreign language teaching, relativity across languages and cultures presupposes contrastive analysis in a very broad senses. Thus, pointing out differences in language structures and cultural conventions should lead students to better acquisition of linguistic and cultural sensitivity

LANGUAGE PROBLEMS IN APPLIED LINGUISTICS: LIMITING THE SCOPE

    Get PDF
This article critically discusses the paradigmatic shift in applied linguistics, resulting in a claim that countless real-world language problems fall within its scope, but in reality they weaken the discipline and make it lack a focus. Then it takes a closer look at the nature of these language problems, and picks out, for analysis, real examples of writing problems in ELT in Indonesian context. It further argues that, by focusing primarily on problems in ELT and SLA, applied linguistics reaffirms its well-defined position and underscores its significant contributions to both disciplines. Finally, it concludes the discussion by adding some notes on the question of autonomy in both applied linguistics and in ELT in Indonesia

SPACE LEXICALIZED: ITS LINGUISTIC IMPACTS IN ENGLISH AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR EFL LEARNING

    Get PDF
Our sense of space is part of our experiential universals. However, the incorporation of space into words differs across languages. This paper argues that “space†is lexicalized in English but not in Indonesian. English encodes the sense of location and direction into adverbial particles, producing language-specific xpressions. Together with prepositions, adverbial particles also combine with simple verbs producing phrasal verbsand making a highly familiar verb expand itself into a huge range of meanings. Furthermore, the unique syntactic behavior of phrasal verbs is assumed to be the motivation for the phenomenon of “prepositional stranding†in English. The enormous presence of adverbial particles in English and their absence in Indonesian could be problematic for Indonesian EFL learners. This problem can be viewed from two perspectives: inward & outward

Local Wisdom with Universal Appeal: Dynamics of Indonesian Culture in Asian Context

    Get PDF
This paper argues that the dynamics of Indonesian culture in Asian context, as seen from a linguistic perspective, may occur in the form of cultural reinterpretation and semantic change. At the cultural level, this paper takes a close look at two things: apology and “Indonglish” (Indonesian English). Apology is a universal speech act. However, where, when, how, and why people apologize to one another can be culture-specific. I pick out an Islam-specific greeting which gets modified by taking a Malay-specific apology as an illustrative example. As for Indonglish, it can be viewed either as a mock term or as a serious term. As a mock term, Indonglish is characterized by Indonesian-specific errors; and as a serious sociolinguistic term, it is characterized by apology, Indonesian address terms, and religion-related expressions. The semantic change pertains to three expressions: pancasila, bhinneka tunggal ika, and tut wuri handayani. The compound word pancasila means ‘five principles’, and the phrase bhinneka tunggal ika means ‘unity in diversity’. Both expressions originate from an old Javanese literary work Sutasoma, written during the second half of the 14th century. In Sutasoma, both expressions refer respectively to ‘five moral principles in Buddhism’ and ‘a single religious truth proposed to unite Buddhism and Hinduism’. However, in modern Indonesia, they have undergone drastic semantic change. Pancasila is a cover politico-philosophical term for the five state foundations; and bhinneka tunggal ika is a national motto intended to unite people with different backgrounds into a single Indonesian nation. The last expression tut wuri handayani, or ‘giving support from behind’, was part of the educational motto for Taman Siswa, an educational institution established in the early 1920s. Now, it is taken as a motto for national education, for its great relevance to principles of modern educational psychology. Briefly, cultural dynamics are observable in apology and Indonglish; and the three local expressions originating from Javanese have now become prominent terms of national treasure, whose meanings spark some global appeal. Keywords: cultural reinterpretation, semantic change, apology, Indonglish
