Flux Compactifications of M-Theory on Twisted Tori
We find the bosonic sector of the gauged supergravities that are obtained
from 11-dimensional supergravity by Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction with
flux to any dimension D. We show that, if certain obstructions are absent, the
Scherk-Schwarz ansatz for a finite set of D-dimensional fields can be extended
to a full compactification of M-theory, including an infinite tower of
Kaluza-Klein fields. The internal space is obtained from a group manifold
(which may be non-compact) by a discrete identification. We discuss the
symmetry algebra and the symmetry breaking patterns and illustrate these with
particular examples. We discuss the action of U-duality on these theories in
terms of symmetries of the D-dimensional supergravity, and argue that in
general it will take geometric flux compactifications to M-theory on
non-geometric backgrounds, such as U-folds with U-duality transition functions.Comment: Latex, 47 page
Uniqueness of Ground States for Short-Range Spin Glasses in the Half-Plane
We consider the Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass model on the half-plane with zero external field and a wide range of choices, including
mean zero Gaussian, for the common distribution of the collection J of i.i.d.
nearest neighbor couplings. The infinite-volume joint distribution
of couplings J and ground state pairs with periodic
(respectively, free) boundary conditions in the horizontal (respectively,
vertical) coordinate is shown to exist without need for subsequence limits. Our
main result is that for almost every J, the conditional distribution
is supported on a single ground state pair.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figure
Longitudinal Momentum Mining of Beam Particles in a Storage Ring
I describe a new scheme for selectively isolating high density low
longitudinal emittance beam particles in a storage ring from the rest of the
beam without emittance dilution. I discuss the general principle of the method,
called longitudinal momentum mining, beam dynamics simulations and results of
beam experiments. Multi-particle beam dynamics simulations applied to the
Fermilab 8 GeV Recycler (a storage ring) convincingly validate the concepts and
feasibility of the method, which I have demonstrated with beam experiments in
the Recycler. The method presented here is the first of its kind.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Superstring partition functions in the doubled formalism
Computation of superstring partition function for the non-linear sigma model
on the product of a two-torus and its dual within the scope of the doubled
formalism is presented. We verify that it reproduces the partition functions of
the toroidally compactified type--IIA and type--IIB theories for appropriate
choices of the GSO projection.Comment: 15 page
Non-geometric backgrounds, doubled geometry and generalised T-duality
String backgrounds with a local torus fibration such as T-folds are naturally
formulated in a doubled formalism in which the torus fibres are doubled to
include dual coordinates conjugate to winding number. Here we formulate and
explore a generalisation of this construction in which all coordinates are
doubled, so that the doubled space is a twisted torus, i.e. a compact space
constructed from identifying a group manifold under a discrete subgroup. This
incorporates reductions with duality twists, T-folds and a class of flux
compactifications, together with the non-geometric backgrounds expected to
arise from these through T-duality. It also incorporates backgrounds that are
not even locally geometric, and suggests a generalisation of T-duality to a
more general context. We discuss the effective field theory arising from such
an internal sector, give a world-sheet sigma model formulation of string theory
on such backgrounds and illustrate our discussion with detailed examples.Comment: 81 page
Zero-Temperature Dynamics of Ising Spin Systems Following a Deep Quench: Results and Open Problems
We consider zero-temperature, stochastic Ising models with nearest-neighbor
interactions and an initial spin configuration chosen from a symmetric
Bernoulli distribution (corresponding physically to a deep quench). Whether a
final state exists, i.e., whether each spin flips only finitely many times as
time goes to infinity (for almost every initial spin configuration and
realization of the dynamics), or if not, whether every spin - or only a
fraction strictly less than one - flips infinitely often, depends on the nature
of the couplings, the dimension, and the lattice type. We review results,
examine open questions, and discuss related topics.Comment: 10 pages (LaTeX); to appear in Physica
A distinctive new species of flowerpecker (Passeriformes: Dicaeidae) from Borneo
The enigmatic âSpectacled Flowerpeckerââa probable new bird species from the island of Borneoâwas first sighted in the Danum Valley of Sabah, Malaysia in 2009. However, the absence of a holotype specimen has prevented its formal scientific description. Since then only a handful of reports from widely disparate localities across the island have emerged, all from lowland sites and often in close association with fruiting mistletoe. Here, we report the long-awaited capture of a specimen of this putative new species and confirm its morphological and molecular distinctiveness as a novel species in the genus Dicaeum
The Percolation Signature of the Spin Glass Transition
Magnetic ordering at low temperature for Ising ferromagnets manifests itself
within the associated Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) random cluster representation as
the occurrence of a single positive density percolating network. In this paper
we investigate the percolation signature for Ising spin glass ordering -- both
in short-range (EA) and infinite-range (SK) models -- within a two-replica FK
representation and also within the different Chayes-Machta-Redner two-replica
graphical representation. Based on numerical studies of the EA model in
three dimensions and on rigorous results for the SK model, we conclude that the
spin glass transition corresponds to the appearance of {\it two} percolating
clusters of {\it unequal} densities.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
Excited nucleon spectrum using a non-perturbatively improved clover fermion action
We discuss the extraction of negative-parity baryon masses from lattice QCD
calculations. The mass of the lowest-lying negative-parity state
is computed in quenched lattice QCD using an -improved clover
fermion action, and a splitting found with the nucleon mass. The calculation is
performed on two lattice volumes, and three lattice spacings enabling a study
of both finite-volume and finite-lattice-spacing uncertainties. A measurement
of the first excited radial excitation of the nucleon finds a mass considerably
larger than that of the negative-parity ground state, in accord with other
lattice determinations but in disagreement with experiment. Results are also
presented for the lightest negative-parity state.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, uses espcrc2. Talk presented at Workshop on

Metastable States in Spin Glasses and Disordered Ferromagnets
We study analytically M-spin-flip stable states in disordered short-ranged
Ising models (spin glasses and ferromagnets) in all dimensions and for all M.
Our approach is primarily dynamical and is based on the convergence of a
zero-temperature dynamical process with flips of lattice animals up to size M
and starting from a deep quench, to a metastable limit. The results (rigorous
and nonrigorous, in infinite and finite volumes) concern many aspects of
metastable states: their numbers, basins of attraction, energy densities,
overlaps, remanent magnetizations and relations to thermodynamic states. For
example, we show that their overlap distribution is a delta-function at zero.
We also define a dynamics for M=infinity, which provides a potential tool for
investigating ground state structure.Comment: 34 pages (LaTeX); to appear in Physical Review
