Magnetic Spin Susceptibility of quasi-particles in metals using the Landau Fermi Liquid Theory
38  In this work, the magnetic spin susceptibility of quasi-particles in metals were computed for some metals based on the modified Landau Fermi Liquids Theory using the electron density parameter. The results showed that for each metal, the Landau magnetic spin susceptibility of quasi-particles is higher than the computed magnetic spin susceptibility of quasi-particles and experimental values. This may be due to the fact that the Landau parameter must have been over estimated in its application. The computed magnetic spin susceptibility of quasi-particles is in good agreement with the experimental values of metals available with a remarkable agreement at. The better estimation of the magnetic spin susceptibility of quasi-particles using the modified Landau Fermi Liquid theory were compared with available experimental values. This show that the introduction of the electron density parameter in the Landau Fermi Liquid theory is promising in predicting the contribution of quasi-particles to the bulk properties of metals. The magnetic spin susceptibility of quasi-particles for transition metals is higher than most of the magnetic spin susceptibility of quasi-particles for alkali metals. This suggests that the magnetic spin susceptibility is considerably higher for most transition metals due to the incomplete inner electronic shells as more quasi-particles can be excited which enhances their susceptibility than the alkali metals
Knowledge And Attitude Of Nigerian Ophthalmologists Towards Cornea Donation And Corneal Graft.
The aim of this study was to determine the attitude of practicing
Nigerian ophthalmologists towards cornea donation and corneal graft.
The responses of 160 ophthalmologists (specialists and senior
registrars) in Nigeria who responded to an appropriate questionnaire on
cornea donation at one of their National conferences attended mainly by
practicing ophthalmologists were analysed. Through the questionnaire,
the knowledge and attitude of the ophthalmologists towards cornea
donation and cornea graft in Nigeria were evaluated. The questionnaire
also included questions on donor materials from prisoners for
themselves and their close relatives. One hundred and sixty (160) of
the 191 ophthalmologists (84%) given the questionnaire responded. All
the respondents have adequate information on cornea donation and
corneal graft. Majority of them were favourably disposed to most of the
questions asked except when it came to carrying a donor card, signing
the donor form and the actual signing of the form. Only 34 (21%) of
ophthalmologists agreed to donate their cornea at death. It was found
that traditional beliefs, social implications and personal
considerations mainly influenced those who were not favourably disposed
to cornea donation and corneal graft. The majority of practicing
ophthalmologists in Nigeria are not favourably disposed to donating
their cornea at death
The microbial flora of the different gut regions of the variegated grasshopper Zonocerus variegatus (L) (Orthoptera :Pyrgomorphidae)
The microbial flora of the gut regions and gut contents of the variegated grasshopper Zonocerus variegatus instars was studied using the pour plate technique. The gut sections (Fore-, mid-, and hind-gut) harboured a variety organisms mainly bacteria, fungi and mould. Yeasts species isolated were Candida, Saccharomyces and Pichia spp. Aspergilus, Penicillium, Fusarium and Rhizopus spp. Both gram positive and gram negative bacteria were isolated. The gram negative bacteria isolated were mainly rods and members of the family Enterobacteriaceae including Proteus, Alcaligenes, Escherichia and Serratia. These species were more widely distributed in and more frequently isolated from the gut regions and their contents than the gram positive bacteria which were represented by Sreptococcus, Lactobacillus and Staphylococcus species. Gram positive bacteria were isolated from the gut extracts of the 3rd and 4th instars but were found in some of the gut regions of the 6th and adult instars. Mould population decreased gradually as the grasshopper was moulting from the 3rd to adult instars. Ranking according to microbial load was adult> 6th >4th >3rd, a reflection of their gut capacity since the microbes were part of the diet. The number and types of microbes in the gut regions of these instars are similar but significantly different in terms of total microbial load (P>=0.05). The results of this study could provide a lead into the proper understanding of the physiological processes involved in the digestion of plant materials by the insect.

Incidence of spore-forming bacteria in unsweetened evaporated milk brands in Nigeria
A total of forty-five samples of three most commonly consumed unsweetened evaporated milk brands purchased from retail outlets in South-western Nigeria were examined for occurrence of spore-forming bacteria. All the samples had high numbers of spore-forming bacteria of the genera Bacillus spp and Clostridium spp. with mean total aerobic viable counts of 2.15x105cfuml-1 for br and A, 0.95x105cfuml-1 for brand B and 0.69x105cfuml-1 for brand C. Total anaerobic plate counts ranged from 0.13x105 for
brand C, to 0.54x105 for brand B and 1.67x105 for brand A. The organisms isolated from the three brands were identified as Bacillus cereus, Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus stearothermophilus, Bacillus subtilis and Clostridium perfringens, with B. subtilis having the highest frequency of occurrence (93.33%). Samples were subjected to four different pasteurization treatments: 550C for 30 min, 800C for 15 min, 900C for 10 min and 1200C for 30 sec, to determine a more efficient process. No growth was observed on culture plates of samples pasteurized at 1200C for 30 sec, except on aerobic plates of brand A. However the milk samples treated under this regime curdled. Samples pasteurized at 800C for 15 min recorded the least counts next to samples treated at 1200C for 30 sec, without causing the samples to curdle. Trypan Blue Dye In Extra-Capsular Cataract Surgery: Initial Observations
One hundred and seventy-two (172) eyes had their anterior lens capsules stained with trypan blue vital dye while 154 eyes, that had no staining of their anterior lens capsules during extra-capsular cataract extraction at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, the previous year, served as controls. The two groups had incidence of striate keratitis, anterior capsule remnants, unplanned anterior chamber (A/C) lens implants and average increase in surgery time compared. The trypan blue group had better results than the non-trypan group. The trypan blue group had an incidence of 40.7% striate keratitis as against 57.1% of the non-trypan blue group, 5.3% unplanned A/C lens implants against 15.6% in the non-trypan blue group and 0.0% anterior capsule remnants as against 7.8% of the non-trypan blue group. There was a statistically significant difference in the rate of these complications (
