    Process Improvements for Direct Reduced Iron Melting in the Electric Arc Furnace with Emphasis on Slag Operation

    Steelmaking based on direct reduced iron (DRI, and its compacted derivative hot briquetted iron, HBI) is an anticipated important global alternative to current steel production based on FeOx reduction in blast furnaces due to its lower specific CO2 emission. The majority of DRI is melted and refined in the electric arc furnace with different process conditions compared to the melting of steel scrap due to its raw material composition being rather different. We provide data and analysis of slag composition of DRI charges vs. steel scrap charges for 16 industrial electric arc furnaces (EAFs). Suggestions for optimized slag operation and resulting process improvements of DRI melting in the EAF are given. A dynamic mass and energy model of the DRI melting in the EAF is introduced to illustrate the implications of the adapted slag operation on the EAF process with DRI charges

Results of leading experts' research in this field is not always available for engineers of agricultural companies, that is why there is need for development of a customer quality assessment method or a method of quality assurance by technical services suppliers. Project of machines and tractor fleet technical service system which included an assembly of interrelated and interdependent elements - processes running in machines, technologies of technical service, performers of technical service - is defined and directed by the aim of technical service which consists in maintaining operability of agricultural equipment, allows to create a method of quality assessment. The quality index represents multiplication of partial factors which take into consideration degree of correspondence of performed volume of works to the required volume, degree of correspondence of maintenance intervals to the required intervals, degree of conformity of repair and maintenance technologies to processes in subsystems; sufficiency of performers competence for implementation of repair and maintenance; sufficiency of range of works potentially carried out by technical service performers for maintenance of a certain types of machine- and tractor aggregates. The degree of correspondence of intervals can be ensured by meeting the requirements of standards and technical documentation. The volume of technical services works can be provided by involving a group of technical service performers. A variant of technical service performers' competence assessment method is suggested. Along with that an information system of technical service is developed which allows to state interdependencies determining quality of technical service

    Review on the Use of Alternative Carbon Sources in EAF Steelmaking

    Steelmaking in the electric arc furnace (EAF), either scrap-based or based on hydrogen direct reduced iron, will in future contribute substantially to the reduction of CO2 emissions in the iron and steel industry. However, there still will be the need to introduce carbon into the EAF process either to carburize the steel or to create foaming slag to improve the energy efficiency of the melting process. So, to reach the emission reduction goals set around the world, it will be necessary to substitute fossil charge and injection carbon used in EAF steelmaking with alternative carbon sources. This review presents the recent research on carbon-neutral biomass-based and circular rubber or plastics-based carbon sources and their potential to substitute fossil charge or injection carbon in the EAF process. It also discusses the current state-of-the art and suggests further opportunities and needs for research and development to use alternative carbon sources to produce a really green and carbon neutral and/or fully circular steel
