    Double Zero

This thesis follows the trajectory of my artistic practice over the past two years, which has led to the installation of my thesis exhibition titled, Double Zero. I hope to position the work among its art and cultural terms by exploring how I have expanded my research concerning Situationist and Marxist theory as well as developed a broader photographic studio practice driven by material experimentation, play, and an investigation into how we live and interact with commodities through media

A Linkage Study of Chromosome IV in Barley

    Get PDF
Barley (Hordeum sp.) is a principal cereal crop throughout much of the world and is of great economic importance in the United States. Spring barley is a leading cereal crop in Utah. Barley has many desirable characteristics which make it an excellent plant for genetic studies. Some of these characteristics are low chromosome number, almost complete self-fertilization, relative ease of hybridization, and easily classified hereditary characters. The establishment of genes or factors at definite loci in linkage groups is a valuable aid in furthering breeding programs and the ultimate improvement of barley. All seven linkage groups have been established although the location of only a small number of genes is known in some of them and most of these genes were mapped from information obtained from crosses involving only two or three factor pairs. This thesis deals with determining the location of five genes believed to be in linkage group IV and to establish new linkages if possible. specifically planned crosses involving from tow to five of these genes were used in this study

Getting Books into the Hands of Children in Transition

    Get PDF
This project aims to get books into the hands of Children in Transition. Who are these children? They are children that have been given a bad hand. These children live in Motels or are homeless or sleeping in their cars. This project will provide these children with the opportunity to get books that are theirs to keep, read and value as their own. I am working with Spread the Word Nevada to get books into these children\u27s hands. Children in Transition (CIT) WCSD\u27s CIT Program serves children experiencing homelessness by providing resources, support, and comprehensive services to students from birth through grade 12. Characterization of self-assembled carboxylate monolayers and multilayers at copper and silver

A variety of chemically modified surfaces were constructed by the self-assembly method via chemisorption onto evaporated metal films. Monolayer films, self-assembled from solution, include n-alkanoic acids, CH[subscript]3(CH[subscript]2)[subscript] nCOOH, and n-perfluoroalkanoic acids, CF[subscript]3(CF[subscript]2)[subscript] nCOOH, on copper, and n-alkanethiolates, CH[subscript]3(CH[subscript]2)[subscript] nSH on copper. Monolayer films were obtained from the gas phase, a newly developed technique, for n-alkanoic acids on silver, and n-alkanethiolates on silver and gold. Multilayer films obtained by self-assembly from the gas phase include n-alkanoic acids at copper and silver and perfluoroacids at copper;Carboxylic acid terminated interfaces were formed by the self-assembly of the bifunctional mercaptoacids, HS(CH[subscript]2)[subscript] nCOOH, via the thiol moiety, at gold. These interfaces were derivatised with copper by deposition of a thin metal overlayer. The monolayer and multilayer films were characterized by optical ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopies, and infrared reflection spectroscopy. Comparisons were made to properties of analogous bulk compounds. These techniques were used to determine the properties of these films such as composition, orientation, defectiveness, molecular ordering and environment, and hydrophobicity and reactivity
