Scheduled service versus personal transportation : the role of distance
This paper analyzes both theoretically and empirically the relationship between distance and frequency of scheduled transportation services. We study the interaction between a monopoly firm providing high-speed scheduled service and personal trans- portation (i.e., car). Most interestingly, the carrier chooses to increase frequency of service on longer routes when competing with personal transportation because provid- ing a higher frequency (at extra cost) it can also charge higher fares that can boost its profits. However, when driving is not a relevant option, frequency of service de- creases for longer flights consistently with prior studies. An empirical application of our analysis to the European airline industry con?rms the predictions of our theoretical model
Predicting Machine Translation Performance on Low-Resource Languages: The Role of Domain Similarity
Fine-tuning and testing a multilingual large language model is expensive and
challenging for low-resource languages (LRLs). While previous studies have
predicted the performance of natural language processing (NLP) tasks using
machine learning methods, they primarily focus on high-resource languages,
overlooking LRLs and shifts across domains. Focusing on LRLs, we investigate
three factors: the size of the fine-tuning corpus, the domain similarity
between fine-tuning and testing corpora, and the language similarity between
source and target languages. We employ classical regression models to assess
how these factors impact the model's performance. Our results indicate that
domain similarity has the most critical impact on predicting the performance of

Technology, business models and network structure in the airline industry
Network airlines have been increasingly focusing their operations on hub airports through the exploitation of connecting traffic, allowing them to take advantage of economies of traffic density, which are unequivocal in the airline industry. Less attention has been devoted to airlines? decisions on point-to-point thin routes, which could be served using different aircraft technologies and different business models. This paper examines, both theoretically and empirically, the impact on airlines ?networks of the two major innovations in the airline industry in the last two decades: the regional jet technology and the low-cost business model. We show that, under certain circumstances, direct services on point-to-point thin routes can be viable and thus airlines may be interested in deviating passengers out of the hub
Valorization of Napier grass via intermediate pyrolysis: Optimization using response surface methodology and pyrolysis products characterization
This study presents first optimization report on pyrolysis oil derived from Napier grass. Effects of temperature,
heating rate and nitrogen flow rate on the intermediate pyrolysis of Napier grass biomass in a vertical fixed-bed tubular reactor were investigated collectively. Response surface methodology with central composite design was used for modelling the process and optimization of the process variables. Individual second order polynomial model was found to be adequate in predicting bio-oil, bio-char and
non-condensable gas yield. The optimum bio-oil yield of 50.57 wt% was recorded at 600 �C, 50 �C/min and 5 L/min nitrogen flow. The bio-oil obtained throughout this study was two-phase liquid, organic and aqueous phase. The bio-oil, bio-char and non-condensable gas were characterized using standard analytical techniques. The results revealed that the organic phase consists of hydrocarbons and various
benzene derivatives, which can be further processed into fuels and valuable chemicals. The aqueous phase was predominantly water, acids, ketones, aldehydes and some phenolics and other water-soluble organics. The non-condensable gas was made up high hydrogen/carbon monoxide ratio suitable for liquid fuel synthesis via Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis. The bio-char was a porous carbonaceous material with high energy content, which can be applied as a solid fuel, adsorbent or source of biofertilizer. This

What are the living conditions and health status of those who don't report their migration status? a population-based study in Chile
BACKGROUND: Undocumented immigrants are likely to be missing from population databases, making it impossible to identify an accurate sampling frame in migration research. No population-based data has been collected in Chile regarding the living conditions and health status of undocumented immigrants. However, the CASEN survey (Caracterizacion Socio- Economica Nacional) asked about migration status in Chile for the first time in 2006 and provides an opportunity to set the base for future analysis of available migration data. We explored the living conditions and health of self-reported immigrants and respondents who preferred not to report their migration status in this survey. METHODS: Cross-sectional secondary analysis of CASEN survey in Chile in 2006. Outcomes: any disability, illness/accident, hospitalization/surgery, cancer/chronic condition (all binary variables); and the number of medical/emergency attentions received (count variables). Covariates: Demographics (age, sex, marital status, urban/rural, ethnicity), socioeconomic status (education level, employment status and household income), and material standard of living (overcrowding, sanitation, housing quality). Weighted regression models were estimated for each health outcome, crude and adjusted by sets of covariates, in STATA 10.0. RESULTS: About 1% of the total sample reported being immigrants and 0.7% preferred not to report their migration status (Migration Status - Missing Values; MS-MV). The MS-MV lived in more deprived conditions and reported a higher rate of health problems than immigrants. Some gender differences were observed by health status among immigrants and the MS-MV but they were not statistically significant. Regressions indicated that age, sex, SES and material factors consistently affected MS-MVs’ chance of presenting poor health and these patterns were different to those found among immigrants. Great heterogeneity in both the MS-MV and the immigrants, as indicated by wide confidence intervals, prevented the identification of other significantly associated covariates. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to look at the living conditions and health of those that preferred not to respond their migration status in Chile. Respondents that do not report their migration status are vulnerable to poor health and may represent undocumented immigrants. Surveys that fail to identify these people are likely to misrepresent the experiences of immigrants and further quantitative and qualitative research is urgently required
Coxiella burnetii Phagocytosis Is Regulated by GTPases of the Rho Family and the RhoA Effectors mDia1 and ROCK
The GTPases belonging to the Rho family control the actin cytoskeleton rearrangements needed for particle internalization during phagocytosis. ROCK and mDia1 are downstream effectors of RhoA, a GTPase involved in that process. Coxiella burnetii, the etiologic agent of Q fever, is internalized by the host´s cells in an actin-dependent manner. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanism involved in this process has been poorly characterized. This work analyzes the role of different GTPases of the Rho family and some downstream effectors in the internalization of C. burnetii by phagocytic and non-phagocytic cells. The internalization of C. burnetii into HeLa and RAW cells was significantly inhibited when the cells were treated with Clostridium difficile Toxin B which irreversibly inactivates members of the Rho family. In addition, the internalization was reduced in HeLa cells that overexpressed the dominant negative mutants of RhoA, Rac1 or Cdc42 or that were knocked down for the Rho GTPases. The pharmacological inhibition or the knocking down of ROCK diminished bacterium internalization. Moreover, C. burnetii was less efficiently internalized in HeLa cells overexpressing mDia1-N1, a dominant negative mutant of mDia1, while the overexpression of the constitutively active mutant mDia1-ΔN3 increased bacteria uptake. Interestingly, when HeLa and RAW cells were infected, RhoA, Rac1 and mDia1 were recruited to membrane cell fractions. Our results suggest that the GTPases of the Rho family play an important role in C. burnetii phagocytosis in both HeLa and RAW cells. Mechanism of Human Papillomavirus Binding to Human Spermatozoa and Fertilizing Ability of Infected Spermatozoa
Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are agents of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in females and males. Precise data about the presence, mechanism of infection and clinical significance of HPV in the male reproductive tract and especially in sperm are not available. Here we show that HPV can infect human sperm, it localizes at the equatorial region of sperm head through interaction between the HPV capsid protein L1 and syndecan-1. Sperm transfected with HPV E6/E7 genes and sperm exposed to HPV L1 capsid protein are capable to penetrate the oocyte and transfer the virus into oocytes, in which viral genes are then activated and transcribed. These data show that sperm might function as vectors for HPV transfer into the oocytes, and open new perspectives on the role of HPV infection in males and are particularly intriguing in relation to assisted reproduction techniques
Vigilancia de la Gripe en España. Temporada 2012-2013 (desde la semana 40/2012 hasta la semana 20/2013)
La actividad gripal en España en la temporada 2012-2013 fue moderada, de aparición tardía y se
asoció a una circulación predominante del virus de la gripe B, con una menor contribución de virus
de la gripe A(H1N1)pdm09 sostenida durante toda la onda epidémica. Los menores de 15 años fueron
los más afectados, con mayores tasas acumuladas de gripe en el grupo de 5-14 años. Se notificaron
cinco brotes confirmados de gripe en cuatro Comunidades Autónomas (CCAA), la mayoría ubicados
en residencias geriátricas y en los que se detectó el virus de la gripe B.
Según el análisis filogenético, la mayoría de los virus A(H1N1)pdm09, A(H3) y B fueron concordantes
con las cepas incluidas en la vacuna antigripal recomendada para la temporada 2012-2013 en el
hemisferio norte. Sin embargo, una parte de los virus B caracterizados genéticamente fueron del linaje
Victoria, linaje no incluido en la vacuna antigripal de la temporada.
Durante las semanas 7-13/2013 se observó un exceso de mortalidad por todas las causas que
superó en un 12% los umbrales de alerta, y afectó fundamentalmente a los mayores de 74 años y al
grupo de 15-64 años.
Se notificaron 525 casos graves hospitalizados confirmados de gripe, 54 de ellos fallecieron. El
mayor porcentaje de casos graves de gripe se registró en los mayores de 64 años y en el grupo de 45-64
años. El 78% presentó algún factor de riesgo de complicaciones de gripe, el 43% fueron ingresados en
UCI y el 29% había recibido la vacuna antigripal en la temporada.
La letalidad observada, en términos de defunciones entre pacientes hospitalizados por gripe
confirmada en la temporada 2012-2013, se situó en el rango de las dos temporadas previas.N
