<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mucins are highly glycosylated proteins protecting and lubricating epithelial surface of respiratory, gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts. Members of the mucin protein family have been suggested to play an important role in development of endometriosis and infertility. This study investigates genetic association of mucin2 (<it>MUC2</it>) with the risk of endometriosis and endometriosis-related infertility.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This case-control study was conducted at China Medical University Hospital, with 195 endometriosis patients and 196 healthy controls enrolled. Genotyping of six SNPs (rs2856111, rs11245936, rs10794288, rs10902088, rs7103978 and rs11245954) within <it>MUC2 </it>gene were performed by using <it>Taqman </it>genotyping assay; individual SNP and haplotype associations with endometriosis and endometriosis-related infertility were assessed by <it>χ</it>2 test.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Endometriosis patients exhibit significantly lower frequency of the rs10794288 C allele, the rs10902088 T allele and the rs7103978 G allele (<it>P </it>= 0.030, 0.013 and 0.040, respectively). In addition, the rs10794288 C allele and the rs10902088 T allele were also less abundant in patients with infertility versus fertile ones (<it>P </it>= 0.015 and 0.024, respectively). Haplotype analysis of the endometriosis associated SNPs in <it>MUC2 </it>also showed significantly association between the most common haplotypes and endometriosis or endometriosis-related infertility.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>MUC2 </it>polymorphisms, especially rs10794288 and rs10902088, are associated with endometriosis as well as endometriosis-related infertility. Our data present MUC2 as a new candidate involved in development of endometriosis and related infertility in Taiwanese Han women.</p

Isolation and characterization of lytic phages fromBacterioides ruminicola ssbrevis

Two bacteriophages (phgrBrb01 and phgrBrb02), lytic toBacteroides ruminicola ssbrevis AR20, were isolated from sewage water. Both phages possessed polyhedral heads and long noncontractile tails, and were classified as Siphoviridae of morphotype B1. Bacteria resistant to phages phgrBrb01 and phgrBrb02 arose following lysis of broth cultures. Survivors of phgrBrb01 infection were capsulated but remained susceptible to phgrBrb02 infection. Survivors of phgrBrb02 infection were noncapsulated and were resistant to attack by both phgrBrb01 and phgrBrb02. Neither phage lysogenized the host. Both phages contained double-stranded DNA, and their restriction endonuclease digestion patterns indicated that the phage genomes were circularly permuted and terminally redundant. Phage phgrBrb01 genome was examined in greater detail and confirmed to be circularly permuted, of size 33 kb, with a terminal redundancy of 2 kb, or 6% of the length of the genome. Circularly permuted genomes in phages of rumen bacteria do not appear to have been reported previously. At present, there is considerable interest in the genetic manipulation of rumen bacteria. The characterization of the phages described herein provides the basic information required for their use in the construction of vectors for the transfer of genetic material

Beyond economics : understanding the decision-making of German small private landlords in terms of energy efficiency investment

The German government aims to achieve virtually climate-neutral building stock by 2050 to tackle climate change. To realise this goal, comprehensive policy packages based on neoclassical economic theory are in place to foster energy efficiency investment. However, in the building sector, there is increasingly a gap between this aspiration and the reality. It is claimed that one of the main reasons for this is that the existing policy framework fails to address the specific characteristics and needs of different groups of building owners. This is a particular challenge in Germany, where 80% of all dwellings are owned privately and 37% are rented out by small private landlords (SPL). Despite the significant numbers of SPL, they often follow black box decision-making processes when considering energy renovations. In this study, the author uses an explanatory model to understand the decision-making processes of SPL, combining theoretical aspects from different research disciplines. This model was applied to a low-demand housing market in a neighbourhood in the Ruhr area. Eighteen semi-structured interviews (each lasting between 37 and 115 min) were conducted, demonstrating that in addition to economic factors, the values, beliefs, norms and routines of SPL - as well as their personal capabilities and contextual factors - play an important role in their decision-making. Based on the findings, recommendations are made for enhancing the effectiveness of existing energy efficiency policies and other supporting instruments (e.g. tenancy law and social legislation), tailored to the specific needs of SPL
