Wetting and Soldering Behavior of Eutectic Au-Ge Alloy on Cu and Ni Substrates
Au-Ge-based alloys are interesting as novel high-temperature lead-free solders because of their low melting point, good thermal and electrical conductivity, and high corrosion resistance. In the present work, the wetting and soldering behavior of the eutectic Au-28Ge (at.%) alloy on Cu and Ni substrates have been investigated. Good wetting on both substrates with final contact angles of 13° to 14° was observed. In addition, solder joints with bond shear strength of 30MPa to 35MPa could be produced under controlled conditions. Cu substrates exhibit pronounced dissolution into the Au-Ge filler metal. On Ni substrates, the NiGe intermetallic compound was formed at the filler/substrate interface, which prevents dissolution of Ni into the solder. Using thin filler metal foils (25μm), complete consumption of Ge in the reaction at the Ni interface was observed, leading to the formation of an almost pure Au layer in the soldering zon
NO x reduction in the exhaust of mobile heavy-duty diesel engines by urea-SCR
A DeNO x demonstration system for a diesel engine used in construction machineries and mobile cranes was setup. In preliminary experiments various extruded and coated SCR catalysts were evaluated with and without oxidizing pre-catalyst. The data from stationary tests with two selected catalysts were used to establish various model-based control algorithms for the optimum dosage of urea in the ESC and ETC. A NO x conversion of >93% at <10ppm average ammonia slip could be achieved at a converter-to-swept volume ratio of <2.
Antimatter and Matter Production in Heavy Ion Collisions at CERN (The NEWMASS Experiment NA52)
Besides the dedicated search for strangelets NA52 measures light
(anti)particle and (anti)nuclei production over a wide range of rapidity.
Compared to previous runs the statistics has been increased in the 1998 run by
more than one order of magnitude for negatively charged objects at different
spectrometer rigidities. Together with previous data taking at a rigidity of
-20 GeV/c we obtained 10^6 antiprotons 10^3 antideuterons and two antihelium3
without centrality requirements. We measured nuclei and antinuclei
(p,d,antiprotons, antideuterons) near midrapidity covering an impact parameter
range of b=2-12 fm. Our results strongly indicate that nuclei and antinuclei
are mainly produced via the coalescence mechanism. However the centrality
dependence of the antibaryon to baryon ratios show that antibaryons are
diminished due to annihilation and breakup reactions in the hadron dense
environment. The volume of the particle source extracted from coalescence
models agrees with results from pion interferometry for an expanding source.
The chemical and thermal freeze-out of nuclei and antinuclei appear to coincide
with each other and with the thermal freeze-out of hadrons.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the conference

Parity Mixed Doublets in A = 36 Nuclei
The -circular polarizations () and asymmetries
() of the parity forbidden M1 + E2 -decays: MeV) and MeV)
MeV) are investigated theoretically. We use the recently proposed
Warburton-Becker-Brown shell-model interaction. For the weak forces we discuss
comparatively different weak interaction models based on different assumptions
for evaluating the weak meson-hadron coupling constants. The results determine
a range of values from which we find the most probable values:

Experimental evidence for multi-pass extraction with a bent crystal
The feasibility of extracting particles from the halo of a circulating proton beam using a bent silicon crystal has been demonstrated experimentally at the SPS for a beam energy of 120 GeV. Presently studies are conducted to understand the extraction mechanisms and the measured efficiencies. In particular the contribution of multi-pass extraction, where the particles can pass through the crystal many times before being channelled and extracted, is investigated. In a recent experiment, using a crystal especially fabricated with a finite amorphous layer on its surface, it has been proven that multi-pass extraction plays an important role. The experiment is described and the implication for further studies are discussed
Measurement of shower development and its Moli\`ere radius with a four-plane LumiCal test set-up
A prototype of a luminometer, designed for a future e+e- collider detector,
and consisting at present of a four-plane module, was tested in the CERN PS
accelerator T9 beam. The objective of this beam test was to demonstrate a
multi-plane tungsten/silicon operation, to study the development of the
electromagnetic shower and to compare it with MC simulations. The Moli\`ere
radius has been determined to be 24.0 +/- 0.6 (stat.) +/- 1.5 (syst.) mm using
a parametrization of the shower shape. Very good agreement was found between
data and a detailed Geant4 simulation.Comment: Paper published in Eur. Phys. J., includes 25 figures and 3 Table
Nuclear Anapole Moments
Nuclear anapole moments are parity-odd, time-reversal-even E1 moments of the
electromagnetic current operator. Although the existence of this moment was
recognized theoretically soon after the discovery of parity nonconservation
(PNC), its experimental isolation was achieved only recently, when a new level
of precision was reached in a measurement of the hyperfine dependence of atomic
PNC in 133Cs. An important anapole moment bound in 205Tl also exists. In this
paper, we present the details of the first calculation of these anapole moments
in the framework commonly used in other studies of hadronic PNC, a meson
exchange potential that includes long-range pion exchange and enough degrees of
freedom to describe the five independent amplitudes induced by
short-range interactions. The resulting contributions of pi-, rho-, and
omega-exchange to the single-nucleon anapole moment, to parity admixtures in
the nuclear ground state, and to PNC exchange currents are evaluated, using
configuration-mixed shell-model wave functions. The experimental anapole moment
constraints on the PNC meson-nucleon coupling constants are derived and
compared with those from other tests of the hadronic weak interaction. While
the bounds obtained from the anapole moment results are consistent with the
broad ``reasonable ranges'' defined by theory, they are not in good agreement
with the constraints from the other experiments. We explore possible
explanations for the discrepancy and comment on the potential importance of new
experiments.Comment: 53 pages; 10 figures; revtex; submitted to Phys Rev
Centrality dependence of K+ produced in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon
The NA52 collaboration searches for a discontinuous behaviour of charged
kaons produced in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV as a function of the impact
parameter, which could reveal a hadron to quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase
transition. The K+ yield is found to grow proportional to the number of
participating ('wounded') nucleons N, above N=100. Previous NA52 data agree
with the above finding and show a discontinuous behaviour in the kaon
centrality dependence near N=100, marking the onset of strangeness enhancement
-over e.g. p+A data at the same \sqrt{s}- in a chemically equilibrated phase.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, submitted to the XXXth International Conference

Charged pion production in fixed target Pb + Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon
Changes in pion production as a function of the impact parameter of the collision or the incident energy, may reveal characteristics of a possible first-order phase transition from nuclear to quark matter, as predicted by lattice quantum chromodynamics. In this paper we investigate charged pion production in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon near 0° production angle and at forward rapidity . The centrality dependence of pion production is shown in the impact parameter range ~ 2-12 fm at the rapidities y = 5.7 and 6.3. An enhancement in the pi-/pi+ ratio has been measured near beam rapidity, indicating Coulomb interaction of charged pions with the spectator protons. The charged pion yield per nucleon participating in the collision (N_p) at y = 5.7 increases faster than linearly with N_p, up to N_p~100 and then it saturates, while at y = 6.3 it does not exhibit any sudden change as a function of N_p
