An Analysis of Cooperating Teacher Feedback: A Qualitative Inquiry
Cooperating teachers are a key component to the success of student teaching internships, serving an integral part in “raising” a teacher. To effectively facilitate the student teaching internship, teacher preparation programs must identify cooperating teachers who align philosophically with the pedagogical training delivered by university programs (Korthagen & Kessels, 1999; Tom, 1997), specifically, cooperating teachers who can reinforce the theoretical framework underpinning the professional coursework pre-service teachers experience in university teacher preparation programs. This qualitative study sought to better understand the feedback provided to future school-based agricultural education (SBAE) teachers during their student teaching experience. Through initial and secondary coding, the research team identified themes among the feedback provided to student teachers by their cooperating teachers. The study revealed cooperating teacher feedback reflects the pedagogical training provided via the teacher preparation program, specifically, around effective teaching behaviors. Understanding the cooperating teacher feedback provides insight for teacher preparation programs
ECG baseline wander reduction using linear phase filters
The continuous real time reduction of baseline wander is a considerable problem in electrocardiography during exercises. Our solution consists of spectral filtering. The legitimacy of high-pass filtering of the ECG by means of digital linear phase filters with a low cut-off frequency as high as the heart rate is shown. The specifications of these filters are derived from experimental results. Special hardware is presented that simultaneously performs the desired real-time filter operation in four ECG leads
A study of Kapton degradation under simulated shuttle environment
A system was developed which employs a source of low energy oxygen ion to simulate the shuttle low Earth orbit environment. This source, together with diagnostic tools including surface analysis ans mass spectroscopic capability, was used to measure the dependence of ion energy of the oxygen induced CO signals from pyrolytic graphite and Kapton. For graphite the CO signal was examined at energies ranging form 4.5 to 465 eV and for Kapton from 4.5 to 188 eV. While the relative quantum yields inferred from the data are reasonably precise, there are large uncertainties in the absolute yields because of the assumptions necessary to covert the measured signal strengths to quantum yields. Oxygen interaction with space-power materials
Data from the space shuttle flights have established that many materials experience relatively rapid degradation when exposed to the low Earth orbit ambient atmosphere, which is predominately atomic oxygen. While much was learned from samples flown on the shuttle, laboratory simulations of the shuttle environment are necessary for a detailed understanding of the various interactions which contribute to the observed degradations. These laboratory experiments are particularly important for predicting the deterioration to be expected for materials aboard orbiting power systems, which will be exposed for long periods of time and could have components operating at very high temperatures. By using a mass spectrometer to synchronously detect molecules emitted from the surface as a result of amplitude modulated oxygen ion bombardment, quantum yields were obtained as a function of ion energy. A technique was developed to obtain preliminary yield data by slowly scanning the mass setting of the mass spectrometer; measurements were extended down to zero modulation frequency; yield data was obtained for the insulating materials (Nomex, Kevlar, and Teflon) used in the construction of electrodynamic tethers; a heated sample holder was constructed to investigate the effect of sample temperature on quantum yields; and the instrumentation was developed to observe the mass spectrometer signal as a function of time during and following bombardment of the sample by a brief (approximately 1 millisecond) pulse of ions
Dendritic to globular morphology transition in ternary alloy solidification
The evolution of solidification microstructures in ternary metallic alloys is
investigated by adaptive finite element simulations of a general multicomponent
phase-field model. A morphological transition from dendritic to globular growth
is found by varying the alloy composition at a fixed undercooling. The
dependence of the growth velocity and of the impurity segregation in the solid
phase on the composition is analyzed and indicates a smooth type of transition
between the dendritic and globular growth structures.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
A National Survey of Enterprise Budget Development and Use by the Extension Service
This thesis investigates the development and use of viii agricultural enterprise budgets. An enterprise is a single crop or livestock commodity, and enterprise budgets are valuable management tools. They serve as the basic building blocks of complete farm planning.
Two separate surveys gathered information from the Extension Service concerning the use and development of enterprise budgets. Analysis of the survey results identified the most common methods used to create enterprise budgets as well as factors that contribute to their use.
A regression analysis was performed to determine the factors influencing the number of times county agents directly refer to published budget information in a year. The agent\u27s understanding of the use of budget information in management decisions, the geographic units that budgets are published for, and receiving the budgets in multiple forms (e.g., sheets, booklets, or software) have significant positive impacts on the use of budgets by the agents.
Finally, based on the findings of this research, a number of recommendations are made to help increase the efficiency with which budgets are made and the use of these Pvaluable tools
AN EVALUATION OF COST OF PRODUCTION INFORMATION USAGE BY COUNTY AGENTS
County agents receive cost of production information primarily from state extension services and then disseminate it to agricultural producers. A survey gathered data on agent usage of this information. A Poisson regression analysis using count data was performed to determine the factors influencing the number of times county agents directly referred to published cost of production (enterprise budget) information in a year. The Closer the Better: Similarity of Publication Pairs at Different Co-Citation Levels
We investigate the similarities of pairs of articles which are co-cited at
the different co-citation levels of the journal, article, section, paragraph,
sentence and bracket. Our results indicate that textual similarity,
intellectual overlap (shared references), author overlap (shared authors),
proximity in publication time all rise monotonically as the co-citation level
gets lower (from journal to bracket). While the main gain in similarity happens
when moving from journal to article co-citation, all level changes entail an
increase in similarity, especially section to paragraph and paragraph to
sentence/bracket levels. We compare results from four journals over the years
2010-2015: Cell, the European Journal of Operational Research, Physics Letters
B and Research Policy, with consistent general outcomes and some interesting
differences. Our findings motivate the use of granular co-citation information
as defined by meaningful units of text, with implications for, among others,
the elaboration of maps of science and the retrieval of scholarly literature
