    Production of the h_c and h_b and Implications for Quarkonium Spectroscopy

    Full text link
    The recent observation of the h_c is an important test of QCD calculations and provides constraints on models of quarkonium spectroscopy. In this contribution I discuss some of these implications and describe methods to search for the h_c and h_b via radiative transitions and other means.Comment: Talk presented at the 1st Meeting of the APS Topical Group on Hadronic Physics (Fermilab, Oct 24-26, 2004), 4 pages, 1 figure, uses jpconf. Closed-flavor pi + J/psi and pi + Upsilon Cross Sections at Low Energies from Dipion Decays

    Full text link
    The scale of low energy c-cbar and b-bbar cross sections on light hadrons is of great importance to searches for the quark gluon plasma using the heavy-quarkonium suppression signature. Unfortunately, little is known about these near-threshold cross sections at present, and recent theoretical estimates span many orders of magnitude. Here we use experimental data on the four observed closed-flavor heavy quarkonium hadronic decays psi' -> pi pi J/psi, Upsilon' -> pi pi Upsilon, Upsilon'' -> pi pi Upsilon and Upsilon'' -> pi pi Upsilon', combined with simple models of the transition amplitudes, to estimate the pion scattering cross sections of c-cbar and b-bbar mesons near threshold. Specifically we consider the closed-flavor reactions pi J/psi -> pi psi', pi Upsilon -> pi Upsilon', pi Upsilon -> pi Upsilon'' and pi Upsilon' -> pi Upsilon'' and their time-reversed analogues. Our results may be useful in constraining theoretical models of the strong interactions of heavy quarkonia, and can be systematically improved through future detailed studies of dipion decays, notably psi' -> pi pi J/psi and Upsilon'' -> pi pi Upsilon.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Recent results from FNAL E835 on the study of charmonium states in (p)over-bar p annihilations

    No full text
    Experiment E835 at FNAL has finished his second period of data taking and is now analyzing the copious data sample collected at χc(1P) and ψ′(2S) states. Preliminary results on the χc0 and ηc mass, total width, branching ratios to γγ and the analysis of the χc0 decay to π0π0 will be presented. New results on ψ′ branching ratios to final states including a J/ψ meson are also shown

    Measurement of the two photon decay of the (Xc0)(1 P-3(0)) state of charmonium

    No full text
    We report on the decay to two photons of the chi(c0) (1(3)P(0)) charmonium resonance formed in (p) over barp interactions at Fermilab experiment E835. We have measured the product of branching ratios BR(chi(c0) --> (p) over barp) x BR(chi(c0) --> gammagamma) = (6.52 +/- 1.18(stat)(-0.72)(+0.48)(sys)) x 10(-8). Using values from the 2002 PDG, this measurement leads to the partial width Gamma(chi(c0) --> gammagamma) = 2.9 +/- 0.9 keV

    New measurements of the resonance parameters of the chi(c0)(1(3)P(0)) state of charmonium

    The resonance parameters of the X-c0, the 1(3)P(0) state of charmonium, have been measured at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator in the reaction (p) over barp --> chi(c0) --> gammaJ/psi --> gamma(e(+)e(-)). A large data sample collected during the year 2000 run yields the results: M(chi(c0)) = 3415.4 +/- 0.4 +/- 0.2 MeV/c(2), Gamma(chi(c0)) = 9.8 +/- 1.0 +/- 0.1 MeV, B(chi(c0) --> (p) over barp) x B(chi(c0) --> gammaJ/psi) x B(J/psi --> (e(+)e(-))) = (1.61 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.08) x 10(-7). Taking B(chi(c0) --> gammaJ/psi) and B(J/psi --> e(+)e(-)) from the literature, we obtain B(chi(c0) --> (p) over barp) = (4.1 +/- 0.3(-0.9)(+1.6)) x 10(-4) and Gamma(chic) --> (p) over barp) = (4.0 +/- 0.4(-0.9)(+1.6)) keV
