Large N Quantum Time Evolution Beyond Leading Order
For quantum theories with a classical limit (which includes the large N
limits of typical field theories), we derive a hierarchy of evolution equations
for equal time correlators which systematically incorporate corrections to the
limiting classical evolution. Explicit expressions are given for
next-to-leading order, and next-to-next-to-leading order time evolution. The
large N limit of N-component vector models, and the usual semiclassical limit
of point particle quantum mechanics are used as concrete examples. Our
formulation directly exploits the appropriate group structure which underlies
the construction of suitable coherent states and generates the classical phase
space. We discuss the growth of truncation error with time, and argue that
truncations of the large-N evolution equations are generically expected to be
useful only for times short compared to a ``decoherence'' time which scales

Non-perturbative equivalences among large N gauge theories with adjoint and bifundamental matter fields
We prove an equivalence, in the large N limit, between certain U(N) gauge
theories containing adjoint representation matter fields and their orbifold
projections. Lattice regularization is used to provide a non-perturbative
definition of these theories; our proof applies in the strong coupling, large
mass phase of the theories. Equivalence is demonstrated by constructing and
comparing the loop equations for a parent theory and its orbifold projections.
Loop equations for both expectation values of single-trace observables, and for
connected correlators of such observables, are considered; hence the
demonstrated non-perturbative equivalence applies to the large N limits of both

American Geriatrics Society and National Institute on Aging Bench-to-Bedside conference: sensory impairment and cognitive decline in older adults
This article summarizes the presentations and recommendations of the tenth annual American Geriatrics Society and National Institute on Aging BenchâtoâBedside research conference, âSensory Impairment and Cognitive Decline,â on October 2â3, 2017, in Bethesda, Maryland. The risk of impairment in hearing, vision, and other senses increases with age, and almost 15% of individuals aged 70 and older have dementia. As the number of older adults increases, sensory and cognitive impairments will affect a growing proportion of the population. To limit its scope, this conference focused on sensory impairments affecting vision and hearing. Comorbid vision, hearing, and cognitive impairments in older adults are more common than would be expected by chance alone, suggesting that some common mechanisms might affect these neurological systems. This workshop explored the mechanisms and consequences of comorbid vision, hearing, and cognitive impairment in older adults; effects of sensory loss on the aging brain; and benchâtoâbedside innovations and research opportunities. Presenters and participants identified many research gaps and questions; the top priorities fell into 3 themes: mechanisms, measurement, and interventions. The workshop delineated specific research questions that provide opportunities to improve outcomes in this growing population.Funding was provided by National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grant U13 AG054139-01. Computation of the Vortex Free Energy in SU(2) Gauge Theory
We present the first measurement of the vortex free-energy order parameter at
weak coupling for SU(2) in simulations employing multihistogram methods. The
result shows that the excitation probability for a sufficiently thick vortex in
the vacuum tends to unity. This is rigorously known to provide a necessary and
sufficient condition for maintaining confinement at weak coupling in SU(N)

The stress-energy tensor of a quark moving through a strongly-coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma: comparing hydrodynamics and AdS/CFT
The stress-energy tensor of a quark moving through a strongly coupled N=4
supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma is evaluated using gauge/string duality. The
accuracy with which the resulting wake, in position space, is reproduced by
hydrodynamics is examined. Remarkable agreement is found between hydrodynamics
and the complete result down to distances less than 2/T away from the quark. In
performing the gravitational analysis, we use a relatively simple formulation
of the bulk to boundary problem in which the linearized Einstein field
equations are fully decoupled. Our analysis easily generalizes to other sources

Systematic Multi-Domain Alzheimer's Risk Reduction Trial (SMARRT): Study Protocol.
This article describes the protocol for the Systematic Multi-domain Alzheimer's Risk Reduction Trial (SMARRT), a single-blind randomized pilot trial to test a personalized, pragmatic, multi-domain Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk reduction intervention in a US integrated healthcare delivery system. Study participants will be 200 higher-risk older adults (age 70-89 years with subjective cognitive complaints, low normal performance on cognitive screen, and â„ two modifiable risk factors targeted by our intervention) who will be recruited from selected primary care clinics of Kaiser Permanente Washington, oversampling people with non-white race or Hispanic ethnicity. Study participants will be randomly assigned to a two-year Alzheimer's risk reduction intervention (SMARRT) or a Health Education (HE) control. Randomization will be stratified by clinic, race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic white versus non-white or Hispanic), and age (70-79, 80-89). Participants randomized to the SMARRT group will work with a behavioral coach and nurse to develop a personalized plan related to their risk factors (poorly controlled hypertension, diabetes with evidence of hyper or hypoglycemia, depressive symptoms, poor sleep quality, contraindicated medications, physical inactivity, low cognitive stimulation, social isolation, poor diet, smoking). Participants in the HE control group will be mailed general health education information about these risk factors for AD. The primary outcome is two-year cognitive change on a cognitive test composite score. Secondary outcomes include: 1) improvement in targeted risk factors, 2) individual cognitive domain composite scores, 3) physical performance, 4) functional ability, 5) quality of life, and 6) incidence of mild cognitive impairment, AD, and dementia. Primary and secondary outcomes will be assessed in both groups at baseline and 6, 12, 18, and 24 months
Fermion Production in the Background of Minkowski Space Classical Solutions in Spontaneously Broken Gauge Theory
We investigate fermion production in the background of Minkowski space
solutions to the equations of motion of gauge theory spontaneously
broken via the Higgs mechanism. First, we attempt to evaluate the topological
charge of the solutions. We find that for solutions is not well-defined
as an integral over all space-time. Solutions can profitably be characterized
by the (integer-valued) change in Higgs winding number . We show
that solutions which dissipate at early and late times and which have nonzero
must have at least the sphaleron energy. We show that if we couple
a quantized massive chiral fermion to a classical background given by a
solution, the number of fermions produced is , and is not related

Quantum limit of deterministic theories
We show that the quantum linear harmonic oscillator can be obtained in the
large limit of a classical deterministic system with SU(1,1) dynamical
symmetry. This is done in analogy with recent work by G.'t Hooft who
investigated a deterministic system based on SU(2). Among the advantages of our
model based on a non--compact group is the fact that the ground state energy is
