Three dimensionality in the wake of the flow around a circular cylinder at Reynolds number 5000
The turbulent flow around a circular cylinder has been investigated at Re=5000Re=5000 using direct numerical simulations. Low frequency behavior, vortex undulation, vortex splitting, vortex dislocations and three dimensional flow within the wake were found to happen at this flow regime. In order to successfully capture the wake three dimensionality, different span-wise lengths were considered. It was found that a length LZ=2pDLZ=2pD was enough to capture this behavior, correctly predicting different aspects of the flow such as drag coefficient, Strouhal number and pressure and velocity distributions when compared to experimental values. Two instability mechanisms were found to coexist in the present case study: a global type instability originating in the shear layer, which shows a characteristic frequency, and a convective type instability that seems to be constantly present in the near wake. Characteristics of both types of instabilities are identified and discussed in detail. As suggested by Norberg, a resonance-type effect takes place in the vortex formation region, as the coexistence of both instability mechanisms result in distorted vortex tubes. However, vortex coherence is never lost within the wake.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
A Highly Available Cluster of Web Servers with Increased Storage Capacity
Ponencias de las Decimoséptimas Jornadas de Paralelismo de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha celebradas el 18,19 y 20 de septiembre de 2006 en AlbaceteWeb servers scalability has been traditionally solved by improving software elements or increasing hardware resources of the server machine.
Another approach has been the usage of distributed
architectures. In such architectures, usually, file al-
location strategy has been either full replication or full distribution. In previous works we have showed that partial replication offers a good balance between storage capacity and reliability. It offers much higher
storage capacity while reliability may be kept at an equivalent level of that from fully replicated solutions.
In this paper we present the architectural details of Web cluster solutions adapted to partial replication.
We also show that partial replication does not imply a penalty in performance over classical fully replicated architectures. For evaluation purposes we have used a simulation model under the OMNeT++ framework and we use mean service time as a performance comparison metric.Publicad

Dust in the reionization era: ALMA observations of a =8.38 Galaxy
We report on the detailed analysis of a gravitationally-lensed Y-band
dropout, A2744_YD4, selected from deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging in the
Frontier Field cluster Abell 2744. Band 7 observations with the Atacama Large
Millimeter Array (ALMA) indicate the proximate detection of a significant 1mm
continuum flux suggesting the presence of dust for a star-forming galaxy with a
photometric redshift of . Deep X-SHOOTER spectra confirms the high
redshift identity of A2744_YD4 via the detection of Lyman emission at
a redshift =8.38. The association with the ALMA detection is confirmed by
the presence of [OIII] 88m emission at the same redshift. Although both
emission features are only significant at the 4 level, we argue their
joint detection and the positional coincidence with a high redshift dropout in
the HST images confirms the physical association. Analysis of the available
photometric data and the modest gravitational magnification ()
indicates A2744_YD4 has a stellar mass of 210 M, a
star formation rate of M/yr and a dust mass of
610 M. We discuss the implications of the
formation of such a dust mass only 200 Myr after the onset of cosmic
reionisation.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ
How to measure inflation volatility: a note
This paper proposes a statistical model and a conceptual framework to estimate inflation volatility assuming rational inattention, where the decay in the level of attention reflects the arrival of news in the market. We estimate trend inflation and the conditional inflation volatility for Germany, Spain, the euro area and the United States using monthly data from January 2002 to March 2022 and test whether inflation was equal to or below 2% in this period in these regions. We decompose inflation volatility into positive and negative surprise components and characterise different inflation volatility scenarios during the Great Financial Crisis, the Sovereign Debt Crisis, and the post-COVID period. Our volatility measure outperforms the GARCH(1,1) model and the rolling standard deviation in one-step ahead volatility forecasts both in-sample and out-of-sample. The methodology proposed in this article is appropriate for estimating the conditional volatility of macro-financial variables. We recommend the inclusion of this measure in inflation dynamics monitoring and forecasting exercises
Quantum authentication with unitary coding sets
A general class of authentication schemes for arbitrary quantum messages is
proposed. The class is based on the use of sets of unitary quantum operations
in both transmission and reception, and on appending a quantum tag to the
quantum message used in transmission. The previous secret between partners
required for any authentication is a classical key. We obtain the minimal
requirements on the unitary operations that lead to a probability of failure of
the scheme less than one. This failure may be caused by someone performing a
unitary operation on the message in the channel between the communicating
partners, or by a potential forger impersonating the transmitter.Comment: RevTeX4, 10 page
The end of life as a challenge to health ethics
no recibir tratos inhumanos y degradantes.
Article 10 of the Spanish Constitution of 1978 recognizes the dignity of the individual,
the inviolable rights inherent in it, the free development of personality, respect for the law
and the rights of others as the basis of political order and social peace. The rules relating
to fundamental rights and freedoms recognized by the Constitution shall be interpreted in
accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the international treaties
and agreements on the same subjects ratified by Spain. Hence, this value of dignity serves
as a basis in its analysis for framing a dignified death. On this premise, several doubts are
raised regarding the combination of several of the precepts of the Magna Carta, which,
in their application to the field of health, can generate discrepancies. We refer, on the one
hand, to Article 15, which calls for the proclamation of both the right to life and the right
not to be subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment. And on the other hand, we see
that this same article 15 confronts the precepts that the Constitution dedicates to the right
to personal freedom in its various variants
