'Bring us the female condom': HIV intervention, gender and political empowerment in two South African communities
The quotation which heads this paper encapsulates two important issues in AIDS research in South Africa: the one is substantive, the other methodological. The link between them is the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in the country and the indication not only that women are more at risk of infection than men, but that, as in many other parts of the world, much of their vulnerability is gender based. âBring us the female condomâ sums up the response of one particular group of black South African women to AIDS education. Their demand was a reflection of their relative domestic and gender empowerment - and also a high degree of political mobilization. However, their position is not necessarily shared by other black women. But the call for the female condom went further: it was a challenge to rethink our position as researchers and particularly to face the implications of commitment to a participatory model of community based intervention research
Association of the superior semicircular canal and tegmen tympani dehiscences and its relationship with the pneumatisation of the temporal bone
To analyse the degree of pneumatisation of the temporal bone when there is an association between dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal and dehiscence of the tegmen tympani.
Materials and methods
We analysed a retrospective CT study of 124 selected cases. A single inclusion criterion was applied: the presence of a dehiscence of the tegmen tympani. On the other hand, the degree of temporal pneumatisation was assessed by axial and coronal planes, and has been divided into the following grades O, I, II and III, according to the status and relationship of the mastoid, the bony labyrinth, the petrous segment of the carotid canal and sigmoid sinus.
Results
Of the 124 cases studied, 35 (28.2%) presented both dehiscences. In 26 of the 35 (47.3%), grade II pneumatisation, 4 (14,8%), grade I, and 5 (11,9%) grade III was observed, with a statistically significant relationship (pâ<â0.001). On the other hand, we did not find a significant relationship when relating both dehiscences in any age or sex group. However, when relating the degree of pneumatisation to sex, among those with grade III pneumatisation, the proportion of men (52.4%) was significantly higher than that of women (47.6%) (pâ=â0.017).
Conclusion
We have detected a statistically significant relationship between the coexistence of grade II pneumatisation and the presence of both dehiscences in the temporal bone
A canonical ensemble approach to graded-response perceptrons
Perceptrons with graded input-output relations and a limited output precision
are studied within the Gardner-Derrida canonical ensemble approach. Soft non-
negative error measures are introduced allowing for extended retrieval
properties. In particular, the performance of these systems for a linear and
quadratic error measure, corresponding to the perceptron respectively the
adaline learning algorithm, is compared with the performance for a rigid error
measure, simply counting the number of errors. Replica-symmetry-breaking
effects are evaluated.Comment: 26 pages, 10 ps figure
Correlations between hidden units in multilayer neural networks and replica symmetry breaking
We consider feed-forward neural networks with one hidden layer, tree
architecture and a fixed hidden-to-output Boolean function. Focusing on the
saturation limit of the storage problem the influence of replica symmetry
breaking on the distribution of local fields at the hidden units is
investigated. These field distributions determine the probability for finding a
specific activation pattern of the hidden units as well as the corresponding
correlation coefficients and therefore quantify the division of labor among the
hidden units. We find that although modifying the storage capacity and the
distribution of local fields markedly replica symmetry breaking has only a
minor effect on the correlation coefficients. Detailed numerical results are
provided for the PARITY, COMMITTEE and AND machines with K=3 hidden units and
nonoverlapping receptive fields.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, RevTex, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
The XY Spin-Glass with Slow Dynamic Couplings
We investigate an XY spin-glass model in which both spins and couplings
evolve in time: the spins change rapidly according to Glauber-type rules,
whereas the couplings evolve slowly with a dynamics involving spin correlations
and Gaussian disorder. For large times the model can be solved using replica
theory. In contrast to the XY-model with static disordered couplings, solving
the present model requires two levels of replicas, one for the spins and one
for the couplings. Relevant order parameters are defined and a phase diagram is
obtained upon making the replica-symmetric Ansatz. The system exhibits two
different spin-glass phases, with distinct de Almeida-Thouless lines, marking
continuous replica-symmetry breaking: one describing freezing of the spins
only, and one describing freezing of both spins and couplings.Comment: 7 pages, Latex, 3 eps figure
The Madison plasma dynamo experiment: a facility for studying laboratory plasma astrophysics
The Madison plasma dynamo experiment (MPDX) is a novel, versatile, basic
plasma research device designed to investigate flow driven magnetohydrodynamic
(MHD) instabilities and other high- phenomena with astrophysically
relevant parameters. A 3 m diameter vacuum vessel is lined with 36 rings of
alternately oriented 4000 G samarium cobalt magnets which create an
axisymmetric multicusp that contains 14 m of nearly magnetic field
free plasma that is well confined and highly ionized . At present, 8
lanthanum hexaboride (LaB) cathodes and 10 molybdenum anodes are inserted
into the vessel and biased up to 500 V, drawing 40 A each cathode, ionizing a
low pressure Ar or He fill gas and heating it. Up to 100 kW of electron
cyclotron heating (ECH) power is planned for additional electron heating. The
LaB cathodes are positioned in the magnetized edge to drive toroidal
rotation through torques that propagate into the
unmagnetized core plasma. Dynamo studies on MPDX require a high magnetic
Reynolds number , and an adjustable fluid Reynolds number , in the regime where the kinetic energy of the flow exceeds the magnetic
energy (vv). Initial results from MPDX are presented
along with a 0-dimensional power and particle balance model to predict the
viscosity and resistivity to achieve dynamo action.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure
Parisi Phase in a Neuron
Pattern storage by a single neuron is revisited. Generalizing Parisi's
framework for spin glasses we obtain a variational free energy functional for
the neuron. The solution is demonstrated at high temperature and large relative
number of examples, where several phases are identified by thermodynamical
stability analysis, two of them exhibiting spontaneous full replica symmetry
breaking. We give analytically the curved segments of the order parameter
function and in representative cases compute the free energy, the storage
error, and the entropy.Comment: 4 pages in prl twocolumn format + 3 Postscript figures. Submitted to

Modelling the cost-effectiveness of public awareness campaigns for the early detection of non-small-cell lung cancer
Background: Survival rates in lung cancer in England are significantly lower than in many similar countries. A range of Be Clear on
Cancer (BCOC) campaigns have been conducted targeting lung cancer and found to improve the proportion of diagnoses at the
early stage of disease. This paper considers the cost-effectiveness of such campaigns, evaluating the effect of both the regional
and national BCOC campaigns on the stage distribution of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at diagnosis.
Methods: A natural history model of NSCLC was developed using incidence data, data elicited from clinical experts and model
calibration techniques. This structure is used to consider the lifetime cost and quality-adjusted survival implications of the early
awareness campaigns. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) in terms of additional costs per quality-adjusted life-years
(QALYs) gained are presented. Two scenario analyses were conducted to investigate the role of changes in the âworried-wellâ
population and the route of diagnosis that might occur as a result of the campaigns.
Results: The base-case theoretical model found the regional and national early awareness campaigns to be associated with QALY
gains of 289 and 178 QALYs and ICERs of d13 660 and d18 173 per QALY gained, respectively. The scenarios found that increases
in the âworried-wellâ population may impact the cost-effectiveness conclusions.
Conclusions: Subject to the available evidence, the analysis suggests that early awareness campaigns in lung cancer have the
potential to be cost-effective. However, significant additional research is required to address many of the limitations of this study.
In addition, the estimated natural history model presents previously unavailable estimates of the prevalence and rate of disease
progression in the undiagnosed population
HoloTrap: Interactive hologram design for multiple dynamic optical trapping
This work presents an application that generates real-time holograms to be
displayed on a holographic optical tweezers setup; a technique that allows the
manipulation of particles in the range from micrometres to nanometres. The
software is written in Java, and uses random binary masks to generate the
holograms. It allows customization of several parameters that are dependent on
the experimental setup, such as the specific characteristics of the device
displaying the hologram, or the presence of aberrations. We evaluate the
software's performance and conclude that real-time interaction is achieved. We
give our experimental results from manipulating 5 micron-diametre microspheres
using the program.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
