    Colour Coherence in Photon Induced Reactions

    Colour coherence in hard photoproduction is considered using the Monte Carlo event generators PYTHIA and HERWIG. Significant effects in the parton shower are found using multijet observables for direct and resolved photon induced reactions.     Directed Polymer -- Directed Percolation Transition

    We study the relation between the directed polymer and the directed percolation models, for the case of a disordered energy landscape where the energies are taken from bimodal distribution. We find that at the critical concentration of the directed percolation, the directed polymer undergoes a transition from the directed polymer universality class to the directed percolation universality class. We also find that directed percolation clusters affect the characterisrics of the directed polymer below the critical concentration.Comment: LaTeX 2e; 12 pages, 5 figures; in press, will be published in Europhys.     We consider the spaces Ap(Tm)A_p(\mathbb T^m) of functions ff on the mm -dimensional torus Tm\mathbb T^m such that the sequence of the Fourier coefficients f^={f^(k), k∈Zm}\hat{f}=\{\hat{f}(k), ~k \in \mathbb Z^m\} belongs to lp(Zm), 1≤p<2l^p(\mathbb Z^m), ~1\leq p<2. The norm on Ap(Tm)A_p(\mathbb T^m) is defined by ∥f∥Ap(Tm)=∥f^∥lp(Zm)\|f\|_{A_p(\mathbb T^m)}=\|\hat{f}\|_{l^p(\mathbb Z^m)}. We study the rate of growth of the norms ∥eiλφ∥Ap(Tm)\|e^{i\lambda\varphi}\|_{A_p(\mathbb T^m)} as ∣λ∣→∞, λ∈R,|\lambda|\rightarrow \infty, ~\lambda\in\mathbb R, for C1C^1 -smooth real functions φ\varphi on Tm\mathbb T^m (the one-dimensional case was investigated by the author earlier). The lower estimates that we obtain have direct analogues for the spaces Ap(Rm)A_p(\mathbb R^m)

    Universal Torsion-Induced Interaction from Large Extra Dimensions

    We consider the Kaluza-Klein (KK) scenario in which only gravity exists in the bulk. Without the assumption of symmetric connection, the presence of brane fermions induces torsion. The result is a universal axial contact interaction that dominates those induced by KK gravitons. This enhancement arises from a large spin density on the brane. Using a global fit to Z-pole observables, we find the 3 sigma bound on the scale of quantum gravity to be 28 TeV for n=2. If Dirac or light sterile neutrinos are present, the data from SN1987A increase the bound to \sqrt{n}M_S >= 210 TeV.Comment: 9 pages REVTeX, 1 postscript figure, uses axodraw.st

    Bulk viscosity of superfluid neutron stars

    The hydrodynamics, describing dynamical effects in superfluid neutron stars, essentially differs from the standard one-fluid hydrodynamics. In particular, we have four bulk viscosity coefficients in the theory instead of one. In this paper we calculate these coefficients, for the first time, assuming they are due to non-equilibrium beta-processes (such as modified or direct Urca process). The results of our analysis are used to estimate characteristic damping times of sound waves in superfluid neutron stars. It is demonstrated that all four bulk viscosity coefficients lead to comparable dissipation of sound waves and should be considered on the same footing.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, this version with some minor stylistic changes is published in Phys.
