    AC/DC Susceptibility of the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CePt3Si under Pressure

    Full text link
    We have investigated the pressure dependence of ac and dc susceptibilities of the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si (Tc= 0.75 K) that coexists with antiferromagnetism (TN = 2.2 K). As hydrostatic pressure is increased, Tc first decreases rapidly, then rather slowly near the critical pressure Pc = 0.6 GPa and shows a stronger decrease again at higher pressures, where Pc is the pressure at which TN becomes zero. A transition width and a difference in the two transition temperatures defined in the form of structures in the out-of-phase component of ac susceptibilities also become small near Pc, indicating that a double transition observed in CePt3Si is caused by some inhomogeneous property in the sample that leads to a spatial variation of local pressure. A sudden increase in the Meissner fraction above Pc suggests the influence of antiferromagnetism on superconductivity.Comment: 4 pages with 5 figures. This paper will be published in J. Phys. Soc.     Microwave and millimeter wave spectroscopy in the slightly hole-doped ladders of Sr14_{14}Cu24_{24}O41_{41}

    Full text link
    We have measured the temperature- and frequency dependence of the microwave and millimeter wave conductivity σ1(T,ω)\sigma_1(T,\omega) along both the ladder (c-axis) and the leg (a-axis) directions in Sr14_{14}Cu24_{24}O41_{41}. Below a temperature TT^*(\sim170 K), we observed a stronger frequency dependence in σ1c(T,ω)\sigma_1^c(T,\omega) than that in σ1a(T,ω)\sigma_1^a(T,\omega), forming a small resonance peak developed between 30 GHz and 100 GHz. We also observed nonlinear dc conduction along the c-axis at rather low electric fields below TT^*. These results suggest some collective excitation contributes to the c-axis charge dynamics of the slightly hole-doped ladders of Sr14_{14}Cu24_{24}O41_{41} below TT^*.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure, to be published in Europhysics Letter

    Electrical Resistivity and Thermal Expansion Measurements of URu2Si2 under Pressure

    Full text link
    We carried out simultaneous measurements of electrical resistivity and thermal expansion of the heavy-fermion compound URu2Si2 under pressure using a single crystal. We observed a phase transition anomaly between hidden (HO) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered states at TM in the temperature dependence of both measurements. For the electrical resistivity, the anomaly at TM was very small compared with the distinct hump anomaly at the phase transition temperature T0 between the paramagnetic state (PM) and HO, and exhibited only a slight increase and decrease for the I // a-axis and c-axis, respectively. We estimated each excitation gap of HO, Delta_HO, and AFM, Delta_AFM, from the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity; Delta_HO and Delta_AFM have different pressure dependences from each other. On the other hand, the temperature dependence of thermal expansion exhibited a small anomaly at T0 and a large anomaly at TM. The pressure dependence of the phase boundaries of T0 and TM indicates that there is no critical end point and the two phase boundaries meet at the critical point.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Urban community perception on social vulnerability to disaster: The case of Bukit Antarabangsa, Malaysia

    Get PDF
    This article aims to determine the perception of urban communities living in Bukit Antarabangsa regarding the issue of social vulnerability (SV) to landslide and landslide-related disasters. Bukit Antarabangsa is widely known as one of the highly urbanized areas near the metropolitan of Kuala Lumpur which are highly susceptible to landslides. Few communities which currently under the SeDAR project (i.e., a join-community-based disaster risk reduction/CBDRR program between Selangor State Disaster Management Centre - JICA - Local NGO: SlopeWatch Bukit Antarabangsa) were selected as a case study. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and household surveys were conducted during Conditional Movement Order (CMCO) on March 27th 2021 and April 11th 2021 to gather relevant information on the researched topic. The questionnaire for the survey was formulated based on the proposed detailed list of SV components, indicators, sub-indicators and weightage which was derived from a review of the literature and internal consultation among disaster experts. The data analysis process in this study served to achieve the objective of social and economic vulnerability assessment in general based on the usage of sub-indicators to point out the score value and level of performance of each sub-indicator based on the survey of local stakeholders. Results from data analysis were translated into spatial context through the production of an SV map of the study area. In summary, the integrated approach to the assessment of SV involving data analysis and mapping/spatial representation has offered some valuable insights towards strengthening local community resilient to disaster and should be considered for inclusion into the establishment of a long-term community-based disaster risk reduction (CBDRR) planning and assessment, and in formulating DRR strategies at local and/or municipal context

    Ultrafast optical nonlinearity in quasi-one-dimensional Mott-insulator Sr2CuO3{\rm Sr_2CuO_3}

    Full text link
    We report strong instantaneous photoinduced absorption (PA) in the quasi-one-dimensional Mott insulator Sr2CuO3{\rm Sr_2CuO_3} in the IR spectral region. The observed PA is to an even-parity two-photon state that occurs immediately above the absorption edge. Theoretical calculations based on a two-band extended Hubbard model explains the experimental features and indicates that the strong two-photon absorption is due to a very large dipole-coupling between nearly degenerate one- and two-photon states. Room temperature picosecond recovery of the optical transparency suggests the strong potential of Sr2CuO3{\rm Sr_2CuO_3} for all-optical switching.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Three-Dimensional Multiband d-p Model of Superconductivity in Spin-Chain Ladder Cuprate

    Full text link
    We study the superconductivity in the three-dimensional multiband d-p model, in which a Cu2_2O3_3-ladder layer and a CuO2_2-chain layer are alternately stacked, as a model of the superconducting spin-chain ladder cuprate. pzp_z-Wave-like triplet superconductivity is found to be the most stable, and its dependence on interlayer coupling can explain the superconducting transition temperature dependence on pressure in real superconducting spin-chain ladder cuprates. The superconductivity may be enhanced if hole transfer from the chain layer to the ladder layer can be promoted beyond the typical transfer rate.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure

    Angular Dependence of the High-Magnetic-Field Phase Diagram of URu2Si2

    Full text link
    We present measurements of the magnetoresistivity RHOxx of URu2Si2 single crystals in high magnetic fields up to 60 T and at temperatures from 1.4 K to 40 K. Different orientations of the magnetic field have been investigated permitting to follow the dependence on Q of all magnetic phase transitions and crossovers, where Q is the angle between the magnetic field and the easy-axis c. We find out that all magnetic transitions and crossovers follow a simple 1/cos(Q) -law, indicating that they are controlled by the projection of the field on the c-axis
