Unemployment in Iraqi Refugees: The Interaction of Pre and Post-Displacement Trauma
Previous refugee research has been unable to link pre-displacement trauma with unemployment in the host country. The current study assessed the role of pre-displacement trauma, post-displacement trauma, and the interaction of both trauma types to prospectively examine unemployment in a random sample of newly-arrived Iraqi refugees. Participants (N = 286) were interviewed three times over the first two years post-arrival. Refugees were assessed for pre-displacement trauma exposure, post-displacement trauma exposure, a history of unemployment in the country of origin and host country, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Analyses found that neither pre-displacement nor post-displacement trauma independently predicted unemployment 2 years post-arrival; however, the interaction of pre and post-displacement trauma predicted 2-year unemployment. Refugees with high levels of both pre and post-displacement trauma had a 91% predicted probability of unemployment, whereas those with low levels of both traumas had a 20% predicted probability. This interaction remained significant after controlling for sociodemographic variables and mental health upon arrival to the US. Resettlement agencies and community organizations should consider the interactive effect of encountering additional trauma after escaping the hardships of the refugee\u27s country of origin
Electro-Mechanical Fredericks Effects in Nematic Gels
The solid nematic equivalent of the Fredericks transition is found to depend
on a critical field rather than a critical voltage as in the classical case.
This arises because director anchoring is principally to the solid rubbery
matrix of the nematic gel rather than to the sample surfaces. Moreover, above
the threshold field, we find a competition between quartic (soft) and
conventional harmonic elasticity which dictates the director response. By
including a small degree of initial director misorientation, the calculated
field variation of optical anisotropy agrees well with the conoscopy
measurements of Chang et al (Phys.Rev.E56, 595, 1997) of the electro-optical

Mental Illness and Chronic Disease in a Random Sample of Newly-Arrived Refugees and Immigrants to the U.S.
The goal of this research is to examine the prevalence of chronic diseases [Hypertension, Heart diseases, Asthma and Diabetes] among newly arrived refugees and immigrants to U.S., to predict the risk factors for each of the four chronic diseases studied, and to discuss whether self-reported mental illnesses [Depression and PTSD] have an impact on the occurrence of chronic diseases
Specific Trauma Subtypes Improve the Predictive Validity of the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire in Iraqi Refugees
Trauma exposure contributes to poor mental health among refugees, and exposure often is measured using a cumulative index of items from the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ). Few studies, however, have asked whether trauma subtypes derived from the HTQ could be superior to this cumulative index in predicting mental health outcomes. A community sample of recently arrived Iraqi refugees (N = 298) completed the HTQ and measures of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression symptoms. Principal components analysis of HTQ items revealed a 5-component subtype model of trauma that accounted for more item variance than a 1-component solution. These trauma subtypes also accounted for more variance in PTSD and depression symptoms (12 and 10 %, respectively) than did the cumulative trauma index (7 and 3 %, respectively). Trauma subtypes provided more information than cumulative trauma in the prediction of negative mental health outcomes. Therefore, use of these subtypes may enhance the utility of the HTQ when assessing at-risk populations
Kidnapping and Mental Health in Iraqi Refugees: The Role of Resilience
Although kidnapping is common in war-torn countries, there is little research examining its psychological effects. Iraqi refugees (N = 298) were assessed upon arrival to the U.S. and 1 year later. At arrival, refugees were asked about prior trauma exposure, including kidnapping. One year later refugees were assessed for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depression disorder (MDD) using the SCID-I. Individual resilience and narratives of the kidnapping were also assessed. Twenty-six refugees (9 %) reported being kidnapped. Compared to those not kidnapped, those who were had a higher prevalence of PTSD, but not MDD, diagnoses. Analyses examining kidnapping victims revealed that higher resilience was associated with lower rates of PTSD. Narratives of the kidnapping were also discussed. This study suggests kidnapping is associated with PTSD, but not MDD. Additionally, kidnapping victims without PTSD reported higher individual resilience. Future studies should further elucidate risk and resilience mechanisms
Physical mapping integrated with syntenic analysis to characterize the gene space of the long arm of wheat chromosome 1A
Background: Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most important crops worldwide and its production faces pressing challenges, the solution of which demands genome information. However, the large, highly repetitive hexaploid wheat genome has been considered intractable to standard sequencing approaches. Therefore the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium (IWGSC) proposes to map and sequence the genome on a chromosome-by-chromosome basis.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We have constructed a physical map of the long arm of bread wheat chromosome 1A using chromosome-specific BAC libraries by High Information Content Fingerprinting (HICF). Two alternative methods (FPC and LTC) were used to assemble the fingerprints into a high-resolution physical map of the chromosome arm. A total of 365 molecular markers were added to the map, in addition to 1122 putative unique transcripts that were identified by microarray hybridization. The final map consists of 1180 FPC based or 583 LTC based contigs. Conclusions/Significance: The physical map presented here marks an important step forward in mapping of hexaploid bread wheat. The map is orders of magnitude more detailed than previously available maps of this chromosome, and the assignment of over a thousand putative expressed gene sequences to specific map locations will greatly assist future functional studies. This map will be an essential tool for future sequencing of and positional cloning within chromosome 1A
A Viscoelastic model of phase separation
We show here a general model of phase separation in isotropic condensed
matter, namely, a viscoelastic model. We propose that the bulk mechanical
relaxation modulus that has so far been ignored in previous theories plays an
important role in viscoelastic phase separation in addition to the shear
relaxation modulus. In polymer solutions, for example, attractive interactions
between polymers under a poor-solvent condition likely cause the transient
gellike behavior, which makes both bulk and shear modes active. Although such
attractive interactions between molecules of the same component exist
universally in the two-phase region of a mixture, the stress arising from
attractive interactions is asymmetrically divided between the components only
in dynamically asymmetric mixtures such as polymer solutions and colloidal
suspensions. Thus, the interaction network between the slower components, which
can store the elastic energy against its deformation through bulk and shear
moduli, is formed. It is the bulk relaxation modulus associated with this
interaction network that is primarily responsible for the appearance of the
sponge structure peculiar to viscoelastic phase separation and the phase
inversion. We demonstrate that a viscoelastic model of phase separation
including this new effect is a general model that can describe all types of
isotropic phase separation including solid and fluid models as its special
cases without any exception, if there is no coupling with additional order
parameter. The physical origin of volume shrinking behavior during viscoelastic
phase separation and the universality of the resulting spongelike structure are

Transcriptome pathways unique to dehydration tolerant relatives of modern wheat
Among abiotic stressors, drought is a major factor responsible for dramatic yield loss in agriculture. In order to reveal differences in global expression profiles of drought tolerant and sensitive wild emmer wheat genotypes, a previously deployed shock-like dehydration process was utilized to compare transcriptomes at two time points in root and leaf tissues using the Affymetrix GeneChip(R) Wheat Genome Array hybridization. The comparison of transcriptomes reveal several unique genes or expression patterns such as differential usage of IP(3)-dependent signal transduction pathways, ethylene- and abscisic acid (ABA)-dependent signaling, and preferential or faster induction of ABA-dependent transcription factors by the tolerant genotype that distinguish contrasting genotypes indicative of distinctive stress response pathways. The data also show that wild emmer wheat is capable of engaging known drought stress responsive mechanisms. The global comparison of transcriptomes in the absence of and after dehydration underlined the gene networks especially in root tissues that may have been lost in the selection processes generating modern bread wheats
Solar axion search with the CAST experiment
The CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) experiment is searching for solar
axions by their conversion into photons inside the magnet pipe of an LHC
dipole. The analysis of the data recorded during the first phase of the
experiment with vacuum in the magnet pipes has resulted in the most restrictive
experimental limit on the coupling constant of axions to photons. In the second
phase, CAST is operating with a buffer gas inside the magnet pipes in order to
extent the sensitivity of the experiment to higher axion masses. We will
present the first results on the data taking as well as the
system upgrades that have been operated in the last year in order to adapt the
experiment for the data taking. Expected sensitivities on the
coupling constant of axions to photons will be given for the recent run just started in March 2008.Comment: Proceedings of the ICHEP 2008 conferenc
Search for low Energy solar Axions with CAST
We have started the development of a detector system, sensitive to single
photons in the eV energy range, to be suitably coupled to one of the CAST
magnet ports. This system should open to CAST a window on possible detection of
low energy Axion Like Particles emitted by the sun. Preliminary tests have
involved a cooled photomultiplier tube coupled to the CAST magnet via a
Galileian telescope and a switched 40 m long optical fiber. This system has
reached the limit background level of the detector alone in ideal conditions,
and two solar tracking runs have been performed with it at CAST. Such a
measurement has never been done before with an axion helioscope. We will
present results from these runs and briefly discuss future detector
