Inclusive gauge boson production in the color dipole formalism
The inclusive production of the gauge bosons and is studied
within the color dipole formalism. Gluon saturation effects associated to
non-linear corrections to the QCD dynamics, which are expected to contribute at
high energies, are naturally included in such formalism. We estimate the
contribution of these effects at LHC energies and compare our results with the
next-to-next-to-leading order collinear predictions. A comparison with the
current experimental data is performed and predictions for higher energies are
presented.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. Version to be published in Physical

The bandstructure of gold from many-body perturbation theory
The bandstructure of gold is calculated using many-body perturbation theory
(MBPT). Different approximations within the GW approach are considered.
Standard single shot G0W0 corrections shift the unoccupied bands up by ~0.2 eV
and the first sp-like occupied band down by ~0.4 eV, while leaving unchanged
the 5d occupied bands. Beyond G0W0, quasiparticle self-consistency on the
wavefunctions lowers the occupied 5d bands by 0.35 eV. Globally, many-body
effects achieve an opening of the interband gap (5d-6sp gap) of 0.35 to 0.75 eV
approaching the experimental results. Finally, the quasiparticle bandstructure
is compared to the one obtained by the widely used HSE (Heyd, Scuseria, and
Ernzerhof) hybrid functional
Hydrogen production from sodium borohydride on a Ni-Ru catalyst : an electrochemical study
Previous work by the authors has demonstrated a high rate and high yield hydrolysis of sodium borohydride, in the presence of a Ni-Ru catalyst synthesized by wet chemistry. The catalyst has been fully characterized and utilized more than 300 times exhibiting high stability and durability. In this work, results of an electrochemical study are reported using the powder catalyst supported on a Ni foam in order to measure the open circuit potential during hydrogen production and to study the reaction using voltammetry and ac impedance. Production rates were as high as 10 Lmin-1gcat -1 at 65ºC. Electrochemical studies indicated that the hydrogen evolution mechanism corresponds to a Volmer- Heyrovsky type, suggested by a Tafel slope of 117 mVdec-1. Tafel region potentials are in agreement with values found for hydrolysis at the open circuit. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism explains the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride using a Ni-Ru catalyst. The role of Ni and Ru is briefly discussed
Quadratic Time-dependent Quantum Harmonic Oscillator
We present a Lie algebraic approach to a Hamiltonian class covering driven,
parametric quantum harmonic oscillators where the parameter set -- mass,
frequency, driving strength, and parametric pumping -- is time-dependent. Our
unitary-transformation-based approach provides a solution to the general
quadratic time-dependent quantum harmonic model. As an example, we show an
analytic solution to the periodically driven quantum harmonic oscillator
without the rotating wave approximation; it works for any given detuning and
coupling strength regime. For the sake of completeness, we provide an analytic
solution to the historical Caldirola--Kanai quantum harmonic oscillator that,
in a suitable reference frame, is just a time-independent parametric quantum
harmonic oscillator.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure
Structural study of the interaction of vanadate with the ligand 1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone (Hdmpp) in aqueous solution
The interaction of vanadate with the ligand 1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone (Hdmpp) was studied in aqueous solution using a combination of multinuclear NMR and EPR spectroscopies, as well as potentiometry and cyclic voltammetry. The different species in solution were identified and characterized, and their pKa values and stability constants determined. The vanadium complexes formed in solution are strongly dependent on media composition (ionic strength, presence of buffer), pH and metal-to-ligand ratio (M:L). Two major species -- V(V)/dmpp and V(V)/(dmpp)2 -- are formed in a 140 mM NaCl solution within the pH range 4.5 to 9.0, when M:L=1:2. In the presence of excess ligand (M:L<=1:5), only the 1:2 complex is present, and at pH<4 paramagnetic species are detected by EPR in solution, thus indicating a reducing capacity of the ligand. Cyclic voltammetry shows that redox processes in solution are not just electron transfer, but are accompanied by chemical reactions. The pKa values and stability constants were determined both by 51V NMR spectroscopy and potentiometry. The present results have a particular interest in the understanding of the aqueous solution chemistry in aerobic conditions of bis(1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-4-pyridinonato) oxovanadium(IV) complex, VO(dmpp)2, a vanadium compound with potential insulin-mimetic properties.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6TGG-40X8DKT-3C/1/3226f220763b348a4f3d74ae0fcd0e2
Magneto-Conductance Anisotropy and Interference Effects in Variable Range Hopping
We investigate the magneto-conductance (MC) anisotropy in the variable range
hopping regime, caused by quantum interference effects in three dimensions.
When no spin-orbit scattering is included, there is an increase in the
localization length (as in two dimensions), producing a large positive MC. By
contrast, with spin-orbit scattering present, there is no change in the
localization length, and only a small increase in the overall tunneling
amplitude. The numerical data for small magnetic fields , and hopping
lengths , can be collapsed by using scaling variables , and
in the perpendicular and parallel field orientations
respectively. This is in agreement with the flux through a `cigar'--shaped
region with a diffusive transverse dimension proportional to . If a
single hop dominates the conductivity of the sample, this leads to a
characteristic orientational `finger print' for the MC anisotropy. However, we
estimate that many hops contribute to conductivity of typical samples, and thus
averaging over critical hop orientations renders the bulk sample isotropic, as
seen experimentally. Anisotropy appears for thin films, when the length of the
hop is comparable to the thickness. The hops are then restricted to align with
the sample plane, leading to different MC behaviors parallel and perpendicular
to it, even after averaging over many hops. We predict the variations of such
anisotropy with both the hop size and the magnetic field strength. An
orientational bias produced by strong electric fields will also lead to MC
anisotropy.Comment: 24 pages, RevTex, 9 postscript figures uuencoded Submitted to PR
