Exploring the role of Facebook in re-shaping backpacker’s social interactions
The recent Facebook launch of Timeline, Social Graph Search, and the increased use of the mobile Facebook apps has resulted in some important implications for the use of Facebook by backpackers. The purpose of this paper is to (re) explore how Facebook has impacted social relationships between backpackers and their personal, professional, and ‘fellow traveller’ networks, particularly in-light of these recent changes to Facebook and the increased reduction of anonymity while travelling. An exploratory survey was administered to 216 backpackers through social media. Descriptive analysis was conducted to explore the perceived social risks and benefits of Facebook in the context of the backpacking experience
Exploring the influence of Facebook on backpacker's social experience in hostels
The primary purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between Facebook usage and the corresponding impact on travel relationships within the hostel and backpacker community. An online survey was administered to backpackers which were both hostel and Facebook users by way of travel-centric online communities. The impact of Facebook on backpacker behaviors, decision making, and relationships was examined. Analysis indicates that Facebook is shaping the evolution of social, behavioral, and communicative norms within the backpacker hostel environment and that there is still a gap in the research that examines the impact of social networking websites on the hostel experience
Probing neutrino physics with a self-consistent treatment of the weak decoupling, nucleosynthesis, and photon decoupling epochs
We show that a self-consistent and coupled treatment of the weak decoupling,
big bang nucleosynthesis, and photon decoupling epochs can be used to provide
new insights and constraints on neutrino sector physics from high-precision
measurements of light element abundances and cosmic microwave background
observables. Implications of beyond-standard-model physics in cosmology,
especially within the neutrino sector, are assessed by comparing predictions
against five observables: the baryon energy density, helium abundance,
deuterium abundance, effective number of neutrinos, and sum of the light
neutrino mass eigenstates. We give examples for constraints on dark radiation,
neutrino rest mass, lepton numbers, and scenarios for light and heavy sterile
neutrinos.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figure
Fair trade learning: ethical standards for community-engaged international volunteer tourism
The purpose of this paper is to articulate a set of ethical standards for international volunteer tourism. The standards are focused on promoting fair trade learning principles in the management and operation of volunteer programmes. Because of the unique social mission, research, and evaluation capacities of higher education, we propose first applying these principles specifically to international volunteer programmes operating at the university-community nexus. These standards have emerged through a collaborative, in-person and online process during the last two years with input by numerous concerned global citizens, international education practitioners and researchers, nongovernmental organization representatives, and community members. The document shared below represents current ‘best practice’ for maximizing the benefits and minimizing the negative impacts of volunteer tourism programmes for both host communities and volunteers

Disconnected and unplugged: experiences of technology induced anxieties and tensions while traveling
The purpose of this study is to explore the experience of being disconnected while traveling for technologically savvy travelers. This paper will explore how new technologies ‘separate’ travelers from the physical and embodied travel experience, and how experiences and tensions caused by being disconnected or unplugged are negotiated. For this study, travelers’ experiences were elicited through a series of online interviews conducted primarily through email and Facebook. Pearce and Gretzel (2012)’s technology-induced tensions and recent literature on internet/technology addiction provide a conceptual framework for the analysis
Neutrino energy transport in weak decoupling and big bang nucleosynthesis
We calculate the evolution of the early universe through the epochs of weak
decoupling, weak freeze-out and big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) by
simultaneously coupling a full strong, electromagnetic, and weak nuclear
reaction network with a multi-energy group Boltzmann neutrino energy transport
scheme. The modular structure of our code provides the ability to dissect the
relative contributions of each process responsible for evolving the dynamics of
the early universe in the absence of neutrino flavor oscillations. Such an
approach allows a detailed accounting of the evolution of the ,
, , , , energy
distribution functions alongside and self-consistently with the nuclear
reactions and entropy/heat generation and flow between the neutrino and
photon/electron/positron/baryon plasma components. This calculation reveals
nonlinear feedback in the time evolution of neutrino distribution functions and
plasma thermodynamic conditions (e.g., electron-positron pair densities), with
implications for: the phasing between scale factor and plasma temperature; the
neutron-to-proton ratio; light-element abundance histories; and the
cosmological parameter \neff. We find that our approach of following the time
development of neutrino spectral distortions and concomitant entropy production
and extraction from the plasma results in changes in the computed value of the
BBN deuterium yield. For example, for particular implementations of quantum
corrections in plasma thermodynamics, our calculations show a increase
in deuterium. These changes are potentially significant in the context of
anticipated improvements in observational and nuclear physics uncertainties.Comment: 37 pages, 12 Figures, 6 Table
