Static Footprint Local Forces, Areas, and Aspect Ratios for Three Type 7 Aircraft Tires
The National Tire Modeling Program (NTMP) is a joint NASA/industry effort to improve the understanding of tire mechanics and develop accurate analytical design tools. This effort includes fundamental analytical and experimental research on the structural mechanics of tires. Footprint local forces, areas, and aspect ratios were measured. Local footprint forces in the vertical, lateral, and drag directions were measured with a special footprint force transducer. Measurements of the local forces in the footprint were obtained by positioning the transducer at specified locations within the footprint and externally loading the tires. Three tires were tested: (1) one representative of those used on the main landing gear of B-737 and DC-9 commercial transport airplanes, (2) a nose landing gear tire for the Space Shuttle Orbiter, and (3) a main landing gear tire for the Space Shuttle Orbiter. Data obtained for various inflation pressures and vertical loads are presented for two aircraft tires. The results are presented in graphical and tabulated forms
F-106B airplane active control landing gear drop test performance
Aircraft dynamic loads and vibrations resulting from landing impact and from runway and taxiway unevenness are recognized as significant factors in causing fatigue damage, dynamic stress on the airframe, crew and passenger discomfort, and reduction of the pilot's ability to control the aircraft during ground operations. One potential method for improving operational characteristics of aircraft on the ground is the application of active control technology to the landing gears to reduce ground loads applied to the airframe. An experimental investigation was conducted on series-hydraulic active control nose gear. The experiments involved testing the gear in both passive and active control modes. Results of this investigation show that a series-hydraulic active control gear is feasible and that such a gear is effective in reducing the loads transmitted by the gear to the airframe during ground operations
A Catalog of Candidate Intermediate-luminosity X-ray Objects
ROSAT, and now Chandra, X-ray images allow studies of extranuclear X-ray
point sources in galaxies other than our own. X-ray observations of normal
galaxies with ROSAT and Chandra have revealed that off-nuclear, compact,
Intermediate-luminosity (Lx[2-10 keV] >= 1e39 erg/s) X-ray Objects (IXOs,
a.k.a. ULXs [Ultraluminous X-ray sources]) are quite common. Here we present a
catalog and finding charts for 87 IXOs in 54 galaxies, derived from all of the
ROSAT HRI imaging data for galaxies with cz <= 5000 km/s from the Third
Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies (RC3). We have defined the cutoff Lx for
IXOs so that it is well above the Eddington luminosity of a 1.4 Msun black hole
(10^38.3 erg/s), so as not to confuse IXOs with ``normal'' black hole X-ray
binaries. This catalog is intended to provide a baseline for follow-up work
with Chandra and XMM, and with space- and ground-based survey work at
wavelengths other than X-ray. We demonstrate that elliptical galaxies with IXOs
have a larger number of IXOs per galaxy than non-elliptical galaxies with IXOs,
and note that they are not likely to be merely high-mass X-ray binaries with
beamed X-ray emission, as may be the case for IXOs in starburst galaxies.
Approximately half of the IXOs with multiple observations show X-ray
variability, and many (19) of the IXOs have faint optical counterparts in DSS
optical B-band images. Follow-up observations of these objects should be

Cicrumnuclear Supernova Remnants and HII Regions in NGC 253
Archival VLA data has been used to produce arcsecond-resolution 6- and 20-cm
images of the region surrounding the nuclear 200-pc (~15") starburst in NGC
253. Twenty-two discrete sources stronger than 0.4 mJy have been detected
within ~2 kpc (~3') of the galaxy nucleus; almost all these sources must be
associated with the galaxy. None of the radio sources coincides with a detected
X-ray binary, so they appear to be due to supernova remnants and H II regions.
The region outside the central starburst has a derived radio supernova rate of
<~0.1/yr, and may account for at least 20% of the recent star formation in NGC
253. Most of the newly identified sources have steep, nonthermal radio spectra,
but several relatively strong thermal sources also exist, containing the
equivalent of tens of O5 stars. These stars are spread over tens of parsecs,
and are embedded in regions having average ionized gas densities of
20-200/cm^3, much lower than in the most active nuclear star-forming regions in
NGC 253 or in the super star clusters seen in other galaxies. The strongest
region of thermal emission coincides with a highly reddened area seen at
near-infrared wavelengths, possibly containing optically obscured H II regions.Comment: 17 pages, 3 postscript figures, AASTeX format, in press for

Bipolar-Hyper-Shell Galactic Center Statrburst Model: Further Evidence from ROSAT Data and New Radio and X-ray Simulations
Using the all-sky ROSAT soft X-ray and 408-MHz radio continuum data, we show
that the North Polar Spur and its western and southern counter-spurs draw a
giant dumbbell-shape necked at the galactic plane. We interpret these features
as due to a shock front originating from a starburst 15 million years ago with
a total energy of the order of ergs or type II
supernovae. We simulate all-sky distributions of radio continuum and soft X-ray
intensities based on the bipolar-hyper-shell galactic center starburst model.
The simulations can well reproduce the radio NPS and related spurs, as well as
radio spurs in the tangential directions of spiral arms. Simulated X-ray maps
in 0.25, 0.75 and 1.5 keV bands reproduce the ROSAT X-ray NPS, its western and
southern counter-spurs, and the absorption layer along the galactic plane. We
propose to use the ROSAT all-sky maps to probe the physics of gas in the
halo-intergalactic interface, and to directly date and measure the energy of a

High Latitude Radio Emission in a Sample of Edge-On Spiral Galaxies
We have mapped 16 edge-on galaxies at 20 cm using the VLA. For 5 galaxies, we
could form spectral index, energy and magnetic field maps. We find that all but
one galaxy show evidence for non-thermal high latitude radio continuum
emission, suggesting that cosmic ray halos are common in star forming galaxies.
The high latitude emission is seen over a variety of spatial scales and in
discrete and/or smooth features. In general, the discrete features emanate from
the disk, but estimates of CR diffusion lengths suggest that diffusion alone is
insufficient to transport the particles to the high latitudes seen (> 15 kpc in
one case). Thus CRs likely diffuse through low density regions and/or are
assisted by other mechanisms (e.g. winds). We searched for correlations between
the prevalence of high latitude radio emission and a number of other
properties, including the global SFR, supernova input rate per unit star
forming, and do not find clear correlations with any of these properties.Comment: 40 pages of text, 3 figures, 6 tables, and an appendix of 21 jpeg

Uncovering trophic interactions in arthropod predators through DNA shotgun-sequencing of gut contents
Characterizing trophic networks is fundamental to many questions in ecology, but this typically requires painstaking efforts, especially to identify the diet of small generalist predators. Several attempts have been devoted to develop suitable molecular tools to determine predatory trophic interactions through gut content analysis, and the challenge has been to achieve simultaneously high taxonomic breadth and resolution. General and practical methods are still needed, preferably independent of PCR amplification of barcodes, to recover a broader range of interactions. Here we applied shotgun-sequencing of the DNA from arthropod predator gut contents, extracted from four common coccinellid and dermapteran predators co-occurring in an agroecosystem in Brazil. By matching unassembled reads against six DNA reference databases obtained from public databases and newly assembled mitogenomes, and filtering for high overlap length and identity, we identified prey and other foreign DNA in the predator guts. Good taxonomic breadth and resolution was achieved (93% of prey identified to species or genus), but with low recovery of matching reads. Two to nine trophic interactions were found for these predators, some of which were only inferred by the presence of parasitoids and components of the microbiome known to be associated with aphid prey. Intraguild predation was also found, including among closely related ladybird species. Uncertainty arises from the lack of comprehensive reference databases and reliance on low numbers of matching reads accentuating the risk of false positives. We discuss caveats and some future prospects that could improve the use of direct DNA shotgun-sequencing to characterize arthropod trophic networks
The BeppoSAX view of the X-ray active nucleus of NGC4258
BeppoSAX observed NGC4258 on December 1998, when its 2-10 keV luminosity was
\~1E41 erg/s. 100% variability is observed in the 3-10 keV band on timescales
of a half a day while 20% variability is observed on timescales of one hour.
The nuclear component is visible above 2 keV only, being obscured by a column
density of (9.5+/-1.2)E22 cm-2; this component is detected up to 70 keV with
S/N>=3 and with the steep power law energy index of 1.11+/-0.14. Bremsstrahlung
emission for the 2-70 keV X-ray luminosity, as expected in ADAF models with
strong winds, is ruled out by the data. The ratio between the nuclear radio and
the X-ray luminosities is <=1E-5, similar to that of radio quiet AGN. X-ray
variability and spectral shape, radio to X-ray and NIR to X-ray luminosity
ratios suggest that the nucleus of NGC4258 could be a scaled-down version of a
Seyfert nucleus. The soft (E<=2keV) X-ray emission is complex. There are at
least two thermal-like components, with T1=0.6+/-0.1 keV and T2>=1.3 keV. The
cooler (L(0.1-2.4keV)=1E40 erg/s) component is probably associated with the
jet, resolved in X-rays by the ROSAT HRI. The second component, which can be
modeled equally well by an unobscured power law model, has L(0.1-2.4keV)~7E39
erg/s, consistent with that expected from discrete X-ray sources in the host
galaxy. NGC4258 and other maser AGNs show strong nuclear X-ray absorption. We
propose that this large column of gas might be responsible for shielding the
regions of maser emission from X-ray illumination. So a large column density
gas may be a necessary property of masing AGNs.Comment: ApJ in pres
Detection and decay rates of prey and prey symbionts in the gut of a predator through metagenomics.
DNA methods are useful to identify ingested prey items from the gut of predators, but reliable detection is hampered by low amounts of degraded DNA. PCR-based methods can retrieve minute amounts of starting material but suffer from amplification biases and cross-reactions with the predator and related species genomes. Here, we use PCR-free direct shotgun sequencing of total DNA isolated from the gut of the harlequin ladybird Harmonia axyridis at five time points after feeding on a single pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. Sequence reads were matched to three reference databases: Insecta mitogenomes of 587 species, including H. axyridis sequenced here; A. pisum nuclear genome scaffolds; and scaffolds and complete genomes of 13 potential bacterial symbionts. Immediately after feeding, multicopy mtDNA of A. pisum was detected in tens of reads, while hundreds of matches to nuclear scaffolds were detected. Aphid nuclear DNA and mtDNA decayed at similar rates (0.281 and 0.11 h1 respectively), and the detectability periods were 32.7 and 23.1 h. Metagenomic sequencing also revealed thousands of reads of the obligate Buchnera aphidicola and facultative Regiella insecticola aphid symbionts, which showed exponential decay rates significantly faster than aphid DNA (0.694 and 0.80 h 1, respectively). However, the facultative aphid symbionts Hamiltonella defensa, Arsenophonus spp. and Serratia symbiotica showed an unexpected temporary increase in population size by 1?2 orders of magnitude in the predator guts before declining. Metagenomics is a powerful tool that can reveal complex relationships and the dynamics of interactions among predators, prey and their symbionts
Chandra Observations and the Nature of the Anomalous Arms of NGC 4258 (M 106)
This paper presents high resolution X-ray observations with Chandra of NGC
4258 and infers the nature of the so called ``anomalous arms'' in this galaxy.
The anomalous arms dominate the X-ray image; diffuse X-ray emission from the
``plateaux'' regions, seen in radio and H imaging, is also found. X-ray
spectra have been obtained at various locations along the anomalous arms and
are well described by thermal (mekal) models with kT in the range 0.37 - 0.6
keV. The previously known kpc-scale radio jets are surrounded by cocoons of hot
X-ray emitting gas for the first 350 pc of their length. The radio jets, seen
in previous VLBA and VLA observations, propagate perpendicular to the compact
nuclear gas disk (imaged in water vapor maser emission). The angle between the
jets and the rotation axis of the galactic disk is 60. The jets shock
the normal interstellar gas along the first 350 pc of their length, causing the
hot, X-ray emitting cocoons noted above. At a height of z = 175 pc from the
disk plane, the jets exit the normal gas disk and then propagate though the low
density halo until they reach ``hot spots'' (at 870 pc and 1.7 kpc from the
nucleus), which are seen in radio, optical line and X-ray emission. These jets
must drive mass motions into the low density halo gas. This high velocity halo
gas impacts on the dense galactic gas disk and shock heats it along and around
a ``line of damage'', which is the projection of the jets onto the galactic gas
disk as viewed down the galaxy disk rotation axis. However, because NGC 4258 is
highly inclined ( = 64), the ``line of damage'' projects on the
sky in a different direction to the jets themselves. We calculate the expected
p.a. of the ``line of damage'' on the sky and find that it coincides with the
