Chameleon Vector Bosons
We show that for a force mediated by a vector particle coupled to a conserved
U(1) charge, the apparent range and strength can depend on the size and density
of the source, and the proximity to other sources. This "chameleon" effect is
due to screening from a light charged scalar. Such screening can weaken
astrophysical constraints on new gauge bosons. As an example we consider the
constraints on chameleonic gauged B-L. We show that although Casimir
measurements greatly constrain any B-L force much stronger than gravity with
range longer than 0.1 microns, there remains an experimental window for a long
range chameleonic B-L force. Such a force could be much stronger than gravity,
and long or infinite range in vacuum, but have an effective range near the
surface of the earth which is less than a micron.Comment: 10 page
Jointly Optimal Channel Pairing and Power Allocation for Multichannel Multihop Relaying
We study the problem of channel pairing and power allocation in a
multichannel multihop relay network to enhance the end-to-end data rate. Both
amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying strategies are
considered. Given fixed power allocation to the channels, we show that channel
pairing over multiple hops can be decomposed into independent pairing problems
at each relay, and a sorted-SNR channel pairing strategy is sum-rate optimal,
where each relay pairs its incoming and outgoing channels by their SNR order.
For the joint optimization of channel pairing and power allocation under both
total and individual power constraints, we show that the problem can be
decoupled into two subproblems solved separately. This separation principle is
established by observing the equivalence between sorting SNRs and sorting
channel gains in the jointly optimal solution. It significantly reduces the
computational complexity in finding the jointly optimal solution. It follows
that the channel pairing problem in joint optimization can be again decomposed
into independent pairing problems at each relay based on sorted channel gains.
The solution for optimizing power allocation for DF relaying is also provided,
as well as an asymptotically optimal solution for AF relaying. Numerical
results are provided to demonstrate substantial performance gain of the jointly
optimal solution over some suboptimal alternatives. It is also observed that
more gain is obtained from optimal channel pairing than optimal power
allocation through judiciously exploiting the variation among multiple
channels. Impact of the variation of channel gain, the number of channels, and
the number of hops on the performance gain is also studied through numerical

Yang-Lee zeros and the helix-coil transition in a continuum model of polyalanine
We calculate the Yang-Lee zeros for characteristic temperatures of the
helix-coil transition in a continuum model of polyalanine. The distribution of
these zeros differs from predictions of the Zimm-Bragg theory and supports
recent claims that polyalanine exhibits a true phase transition. New estimates
for critical exponents are presented and the relation of our results to the
Lee-Yang theorem is discussed.Comment: 15 pages and 5 figure
Quantum geometry from 2+1 AdS quantum gravity on the torus
Wilson observables for 2+1 quantum gravity with negative cosmological
constant, when the spatial manifold is a torus, exhibit several novel features:
signed area phases relate the observables assigned to homotopic loops, and
their commutators describe loop intersections, with properties that are not yet
fully understood. We describe progress in our study of this bracket, which can
be interpreted as a q-deformed Goldman bracket, and provide a geometrical
interpretation in terms of a quantum version of Pick's formula for the area of

The Quantum Modular Group in (2+1)-Dimensional Gravity
The role of the modular group in the holonomy representation of
(2+1)-dimensional quantum gravity is studied. This representation can be viewed
as a "Heisenberg picture", and for simple topologies, the transformation to the
ADM "Schr{\"o}dinger picture" may be found. For spacetimes with the spatial
topology of a torus, this transformation and an explicit operator
representation of the mapping class group are constructed. It is shown that the
quantum modular group splits the holonomy representation Hilbert space into
physically equivalent orthogonal ``fundamental regions'' that are interchanged

Improving the J/psi Production Baseline at RHIC and the LHC
We assess the theoretical uncertainties on the inclusive J/psi production
cross section in the Color Evaporation Model (CEM) using values for the charm
quark mass, renormalization and factorization scales obtained from a fit to the
charm production data. We use our new results to provide improved baseline
comparison calculations at RHIC and the LHC. We also study cold matter effects
on J/psi production at leading relative to next-to-leading order in the CEM
