Possible Discovery Channel for New Charged Leptons at the LHC

We propose a channel for the possible discovery of new charged leptons at the Large Hadron Collider. The proposed final state contains three same-sign leptons, making this new channel practically back- groundless. The method is illustrated for two different cases: the four-family Standard Model and the Grand Unified Theory based on the E6 gauge group. An example study taking 250 GeV as the charged lepton mass shows that in both models, about 8 signal events can be expected at 14 TeV center-of-mass energy with 1 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity. Although the event yield might not be sufficient for detailed measurements of the charged lepton properties, it would be sufficient to claim discovery through a counting experiment.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. v2 update includes an estimate of the backgrounds, consideration of the EW oblique parameters, and minor improvements. v3 update includes detector acceptance and ttbar backgroun

Ion source and LEBT of KAHVELab proton beamline

The KAHVE Laboratory, at Bo\u{g}azi\c{c}i University, Istanbul, Turkey is home to an educational proton linac project. The proton beam will originate from a 20 keV H+ source and will be delivered to a two module Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) operating at 800 MHz via a low energy beam transport (LEBT) line. Currently, the design phase being over, commissioning and stability tests are ongoing for the proton beamline which is already produced and installed except the RFQ which is being manufactured. This work summarizes the design, production and test phases of the ion source and LEBT line components

The ROD crate DAQ software framework of the ATLAS data acquisition system

    Get PDF
In the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, the ROD Crate DAQ provides a complete software framework to implement data acquisition functionality at the boundary between the detector specific electronics and the common part of the data acquisition system. Based on a plugin mechanism, it allows selecting and using common services (like data output and data monitoring channels) and developing software to control and acquire data from detector specific modules providing the infrastructure for control, monitoring and calibration. Including also event building functionality, the ROD Crate DAQ is intended to be the main data acquisition tool for the first phase of detector commissioning. This paper presents the design, functionality and performance of the ROD Crate DAQ and its usage in the ATLAS data acquisition system and during detector tests

The ATLAS trigger - high-level trigger commissioning and operation during early data taking

The ATLAS experiment is one of the two general-purpose experiments due to start operation soon at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC will collide protons at a centre of mass energy of 14~TeV, with a bunch-crossing rate of 40~MHz. The ATLAS three-level trigger will reduce this input rate to match the foreseen offline storage capability of 100-200~Hz. This paper gives an overview of the ATLAS High Level Trigger focusing on the system design and its innovative features. We then present the ATLAS trigger strategy for the initial phase of LHC exploitation. Finally, we report on the valuable experience acquired through in-situ commissioning of the system where simulated events were used to exercise the trigger chain. In particular we show critical quantities such as event processing times, measured in a large-scale HLT farm using a complex trigger menu
