    The high energy limit of the trajectory representation of quantum mechanics

    The trajectory representation in the high energy limit (Bohr correspondence principle) manifests a residual indeterminacy. This indeterminacy is compared to the indeterminacy found in the classical limit (Planck's constant to 0) [Int. J. Mod. Phys. A 15, 1363 (2000)] for particles in the classically allowed region, the classically forbiden region, and near the WKB turning point. The differences between Bohr's and Planck's principles for the trajectory representation are compared with the differences between these correspondence principles for the wave representation. The trajectory representation in the high energy limit is shown to go to neither classical nor statistical mechanics. The residual indeterminacy is contrasted to Heisenberg uncertainty. The relationship between indeterminacy and 't Hooft's information loss and equivalence classes is investigated.Comment: 12 pages of LaTeX. No figures.     Magnetic Field Limits on SGRs

    We measure the period and spin-down rate for SGR 1900+14 during the quiescient period two years before the recent interval of renewed burst activity. We find that the spin-down rate doubled during the burst activity which is inconsistent with both mangetic dipole driven spin down and a magnetic field energy source for the bursts. We also show that SGRs 1900+14 and 1806-20 have braking indices of ∼\sim1 which indicate that the spin-down is due to wind torques and not magnetic dipole radiation. We further show that a combination of dipole radiation, and wind luminosity, coupled with estimated ages and present spin parameters, imply that the magnetic fields of SGRs 1900+14 and 1806-20 are less than the critical field of 4×1013\times10^{13} G and that the efficiency for conversion of wind luminosity to x-ray luminosity is <2%.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures submitted to 5th Huntsville GRB Symposium proceeding

    Universal conductance reduction in a quantum wire

    Even a single point defect in a quantum wire causes a conductance reduction. In this paper we prove (without any approximations) that for any point impurity this conductance reduction in all the sub-bands is exactly 2e^2/h. Moreover, it is shown that in the case of a surface defect, not only is the conductance minimum independent of the defect characteristics, but the transmission matrix also converges to universal (defect-independent) values.     Orbital order, stacking defects and spin-fluctuations in the pp-electron molecular solid RbO2_2

    We examine magnon and orbiton behavior in localized O2_2 anti-bonding molecular π∗\pi^* orbitals using an effective Kugel-Khomskii Hamiltonian derived from a two band Hubbard model with hopping parameters taken from {\em ab initio} density functional calculations. The considerable difference between intraband and interband hoppings leads to a strong coupling between the spin wave dispersion and the orbital ground state, providing a straightforward way of experimentally determining the orbital ground state from the measured magnon dispersion. The near degeneracy of different orbital ordered states leads to stacking defects which further modulate spin-fluctuation spectra. Proliferation of orbital domains disrupts long-range magnetic order, thus causing a significant reduction in the observed N\'eel temperature.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Bisous model - detecting filamentary patterns in point processes

    The cosmic web is a highly complex geometrical pattern, with galaxy clusters at the intersection of filaments and filaments at the intersection of walls. Identifying and describing the filamentary network is not a trivial task due to the overwhelming complexity of the structure, its connectivity and the intrinsic hierarchical nature. To detect and quantify galactic filaments we use the Bisous model, which is a marked point process built to model multi-dimensional patterns. The Bisous filament finder works directly with the galaxy distribution data and the model intrinsically takes into account the connectivity of the filamentary network. The Bisous model generates the visit map (the probability to find a filament at a given point) together with the filament orientation field. Using these two fields, we can extract filament spines from the data. Together with this paper we publish the computer code for the Bisous model that is made available in GitHub. The Bisous filament finder has been successfully used in several cosmological applications and further development of the model will allow to detect the filamentary network also in photometric redshift surveys, using the full redshift posterior. We also want to encourage the astro-statistical community to use the model and to connect it with all other existing methods for filamentary pattern detection and characterisation.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Computin
