COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF FIVE METHODS FOR EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF OCCLUSAL CARIES LESIONS – in vitro study.

Purpose: The aim of the presented in vitro study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the device DIAGNOcam and the laser fluorescence device DIAGNOdent for early diagnosis of occlusal caries and to compare it with three traditional methods – visual and tactile, dye and radiographic examination. Material and methods: The sample consisted of 60 extracted human teeth. Three clinicians diagnosed independently the presence or absence of early occlusal surface caries with the visible tactile method,DIAGNOcam andDIAGNOdent. Then X-rays were taken and the dentists viewed them separately, without magnification.Fuchsine was applied for 30 sec. and then washed under running water for 20 min. Places where dye was present were registered. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS package of Windows. Results: The results showed high level of correspondence between the authors for all the diagnostic methods. Concerning different methods applied for caries diagnosis there was a correlation between the methods, but it was diverging for the different methods. No correlation between radiographic exam and data obtained with DIAGNOdent and dye staining was observed. Conclusions: Based on the obtained results we may conclude that the least sensitive method for fissure caries diagnosis was the dye staining, followed by the radiographic exam. The results, obtained by DIAGNOdent and DIAGNOcam were very close, but DIAGNOcams’ data was better correlating with the clinical results.DIAGNOcam procedure can be judged as equivalent in the detection of occlusal dentine lesions when compared to clinical results

Holocene vegetation dynamics of the Eastern Mediterranean region: old controversies addressed by a new analysis

Aim: We reconstruct vegetation changes since 12 ky in the Eastern Mediterranean to examine four features of the regional vegetation history that are controversial: the extent of non-analogue vegetation assemblages in the transition from the Late Glacial to the early Holocene, the synchroneity of postglacial forest expansion, the geographical extent of temperate deciduous forest during the mid-Holocene and the timing and trigger for the re-establishment of drought-tolerant vegetation during the late Holocene. Location: The Eastern Mediterranean–Black Sea Caspian Corridor. Taxon: Vascular plants. Methods: We reconstruct vegetation changes for 122 fossil pollen records using a method that accounts for within-biome variability in pollen taxon abundance to determine the biome with which a sample has greatest affinity. Per-biome affinity threshold values were used to identify samples that do not belong to any modern biome. We apply time series analysis and mapping to examine space and time changes. Results: Sites with non-analogue vegetation were most common between 11.5 and 9.5 ky and mostly in the Carpathians. The transition from open vegetation to forest occurred at 10.64 ± 0.65 ky across the whole region. Temperate deciduous forest was not more extensive at 6 ky; maximum expansion occurred between 5.5 and 5 ky. Expansion of forest occurred between c. 4 and 2.8 k, followed by an abrupt decrease and a subsequent recovery. This pattern is not consistent with a systematic decline of forest towards more drought-tolerant vegetation in the late Holocene but is consistent with centennial-scale speleothem patterns linked to variations in moisture availability. Main Conclusions: We show the occurrence of non-analogue vegetation types peaked during early Holocene, forest expansion was synchronous across the region and there was an expansion of moisture-demanding temperate trees around 5.5 to 5 ky. There is no signal of a continuous late Holocene aridification, but changes in forest cover appear to reflect climatic rather than anthropogenic influences

Characterizing Bars at z~0 in the optical and NIR: Implications for the Evolution of Barred Disks with Redshift

Critical insights on galaxy evolution stem from the study of bars. With the advent of HST surveys that trace bars in the rest-frame optical out to z~1, it is critical to provide a reference baseline for bars at z~0 in the optical band. We present results on bars at z~0 in the optical and NIR bands based on 180 spirals from OSUBSGS. (1) The deprojected bar fraction at z~0 is ~60% +/-6% in the NIR H-band and ~44% +/-6% in the optical B-band. (2) The results before and after deprojection are similar, which is encouraging for high-redshift studies that forego deprojection. (3) Studies of bars at z~0.2-1.0 (lookback time of 3-8 Gyr) have reported an optical bar fraction of ~30% +/-6%, after applying cutoffs in absolute magnitude (M_V = 1.5 kpc), and bar ellipticity (e_bar >= 0.4). Applying these exact cutoffs to the OSUBSGS data yields a comparable optical B-band bar fraction at z~0 of ~ 34%+/-6%. This rules out scenarios where the optical bar fraction in bright disks declines strongly with redshift. (4) Most (~70%) bars have moderate to high strentgh or ellipticity (0.50 <= e_bar <= 0.75). There is no bimodality in the distribution of e_bar. The H-band bar fraction and e_bar show no substantial variation across RC3 Hubble types Sa to Scd. (5) RC3 bar types should be used with caution. Many galaxies with RC3 types "AB" turn out to be unbarred and RC3 bar classes "B" and "AB" have a significant overlap in e_bar. (6) Most bars have sizes below 5 kpc. Bar and disk sizes correlate, and most bars have a_bar/R_25~0.1-0.5. This suggests that the growths of bars and disks are intimately tied.Comment: 11 pages, 17 figures, 3 tables, ApJ accepted, abridged abstract below. Minor changes and shortened paper for ApJ limits.
