Palaeolimnological evidence for eutrophication in Malham Tarn (SSSI), North Yorkshire
This is the final report to Natural England on the project “Palaeolimnological evidence for eutrophication in Malham Tarn (SSSI), North Yorkshire”. The aim is to seek palaeolimnological evidence for
eutrophication in Malham Tarn both to complement and cross-validate contemporary and other historical
evidence for such at the site, as well as to establish whether eutrophication-related changes in the aquatic
macrophyte community occurred before the invasion of Elodea canadensis in 1962. Palaeolimnology is
also used to assess whether there is evidence for eutrophication extending back to the 18th century as
has been suggested (Pentecost, 1998; Bradley, 2007), and to aid in describing the unimpacted state of
Malham Tarn and the setting of conservation targets
Saprolegnia diclina IIIA and S. parasitica employ different infection strategies when colonizing eggs of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.

We would also like to acknowledge support from the BBSRC and the University of Aberdeen (PvW) and Landcatch and AquaGen for providing salmon eggs. Multi-frequency VLBA study of the blazar S5 0716+714 during the active state in 2004: I. Inner jet kinematics
We observed the blazar \object{0716+714} with the
VLBA during its active state in 2003-2004. In this paper we discuss
multi-frequency analysis of the inner jet (first 1 mas) kinematics. The
unprecedentedly dense time sampling allows us to trace jet components without
misidentification and to calculate the component speeds with good accuracy. In
the smooth superluminal jet we were able to identify and track three components
over time moving outwards with relatively high apparent superluminal speeds
(8.5-19.4 ), which contradicts the hypothesis of a stationary oscillating
jet in this source. Component ejections occur at a relatively high rate (once
in two months), and they are accompanied by mm-continuum outbursts.
Superluminal jet components move along wiggling trajectories, which is an
indication of actual helical motion. Fast proper motion and rapid decay of the
components suggest that this source should be observed with the VLBI at a rate
of at least once in one or two months in order to trace superluminal jet
components without confusion.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics Letter, language

Divergent expression of claudin -1, -3, -4, -5 and -7 in developing human lung

Abstract

Background

Claudins are the main components of tight junctions, structures which are associated with cell polarity and permeability. The aim of this study was to analyze the expression of claudins 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 in developing human lung tissues from 12 to 40 weeks of gestation.

Methods

47 cases were analyzed by immunohistochemisty for claudins 1, 3, 4, 5 and 7. 23 cases were also investigated by quantitative RT-PCR for claudin-1, -3 and -4.

Results

Claudin-1 was expressed in epithelium of bronchi and large bronchioles from week 12 onwards but it was not detected in epithelium of developing alveoli. Claudin-3, -4 and -7 were strongly expressed in bronchial epithelium from week 12 to week 40, and they were also expressed in alveoli from week 16 to week 40. Claudin-5 was expressed strongly during all periods in endothelial cells. It was expressed also in epithelium of bronchi from week 12 to week 40, and in alveoli during the canalicular period. RT-PCR analyses revealed detectable amounts of RNAs for claudins 1, 3 and 4 in all cases studied.

Conclusion

Claudin-1, -3, -4, -5, and -7 are expressed in developing human lung from week 12 to week 40 with distinct locations and in divergent quantities. The expression of claudin-1 was restricted to the bronchial epithelium, whereas claudin-3, -4 and -7 were positive also in alveolar epithelium as well as in the bronchial epithelium. All claudins studied are linked to the development of airways, whereas claudin-3, -4, -5 and -7, but not claudin-1, are involved in the development of acinus and the differentiation of alveolar epithelial cells.</p
