An alternative well-posedness property and static spacetimes with naked singularities

    Get PDF
In the first part of this paper, we show that the Cauchy problem for wave propagation in some static spacetimes presenting a singular time-like boundary is well posed, if we only demand the waves to have finite energy, although no boundary condition is required. This feature does not come from essential self-adjointness, which is false in these cases, but from a different phenomenon that we call the alternative well-posedness property, whose origin is due to the degeneracy of the metric components near the boundary. Beyond these examples, in the second part, we characterize the type of degeneracy which leads to this phenomenon.Comment: 34 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Class. Quantum Gra

Light-cone quantization of two dimensional field theory in the path integral approach

    Get PDF
A quantization condition due to the boundary conditions and the compatification of the light cone space-time coordinate x−x^- is identified at the level of the classical equations for the right-handed fermionic field in two dimensions. A detailed analysis of the implications of the implementation of this quantization condition at the quantum level is presented. In the case of the Thirring model one has selection rules on the excitations as a function of the coupling and in the case of the Schwinger model a double integer structure of the vacuum is derived in the light-cone frame. Two different quantized chiral Schwinger models are found, one of them without a ξ\theta-vacuum structure. A generalization of the quantization condition to theories with several fermionic fields and to higher dimensions is presented.Comment: revtex, 14 p

Identification of \u3ci\u3eBrucella\u3c/i\u3e spp. in feral swine (\u3ci\u3eSus scrofa\u3c/i\u3e) at abattoirs in Texas, USA

Various tissues, nasal swabs, urine and blood samples were collected from 376 feral swine at two federally inspected abattoirs in Texas during six separate sampling periods in 2015. Samples were tested for Brucella spp. by culture and serology. Brucella spp. were cultured from 13.0% of feral swine, and antibodies were detected in 9.8%. Only 32.7% of culture-positive feral swine were also antibody positive, and 43.2% of antibody-positive feral swine were culture positive. Approximately, the same number of males (14.0%) and females (12.1%) were culture positive, and slightly more males (10.5%) than females (8.7%) were antibody positive. Our results indicate that serology likely underestimates the prevalence of feral swine infected, and that those who come in contact with feral swine should be aware of the symptoms of infection with Brucella spp. to ensure prompt treatment

Testing spatial noncommutativiy via the Aharonov-Bohm effect

    Get PDF
The possibility of detecting noncommutative space relics is analyzed using the Aharonov-Bohm effect. We show that, if space is noncommutative, the holonomy receives non-trivial kinematical corrections that will produce a diffraction pattern even when the magnetic flux is quantized. The scattering problem is also formulated, and the differential cross section is calculated. Our results can be extrapolated to high energy physics and the bound Ξ∌[10TeV]−2\theta \sim [ 10 {TeV}]^{-2} is found. If this bound holds, then noncommutative effects could be explored in scattering experiments measuring differential cross sections for small angles. The bound state Aharonov- Bohm effect is also discussed.Comment: 16 pp, Revtex 4, 2 fig, new references added. To appear in PR

The No-Hair Conjecture in 2D Dilaton Supergravity

    Get PDF
We study two dimensional dilaton gravity and supergravity following hamiltonian methods. Firstly, we consider the structure of constraints of 2D dilaton gravity and then the 2D dilaton supergravity is obtained taking the squere root of the bosonic constraints. We integrate exactly the equations of motion in both cases and we show that the solutions of the equation of motion of 2D dilaton supergravity differs from the solutions of 2D dilaton gravity only by boundary conditions on the fermionic variables, i.e. the black holes of 2D dilaton supergravity theory are exactly the same black holes of 2D bosonic dilaton gravity modulo supersymmetry transformations. This result is the bidimensional analogue of the no-hair theorem for supergravity.Comment: Plain Tex, 19pp, IPNO-TH 93/2

Induced Parity Breaking Term at Finite Temperature

    Get PDF
We compute the exact induced parity-breaking part of the effective action for 2+1 massive fermions in QED3QED_3 at finite temperature by calculating the fermion determinant in a particular background. The result confirms that gauge invariance of the effective action is respected even when large gauge transformations are considered.Comment: to be published in Physical Review Letters. 5 pages, Revtex, no figure

BTZ Black Hole as Solution of 3d Higher Spin Gauge Theory

    Get PDF
BTZ black hole is interpreted as exact solution of 3d higher spin gauge theory. Solutions for free massless fields in BTZ black hole background are constructed with the help of the star-product algebra formalism underlying the formulation of 3d higher spin theory. It is shown that a part of higher spin symmetries remains unbroken for special values of the BTZ parameters.Comment: 31 pages, LaTeX; references correcte

Quasinormal Modes of Extremal BTZ Black Hole

Motivated by several pieces of evidence, in order to show that extreme black holes cannot be obtained as limits of non-extremal black holes, in this article we calculate explicitly quasinormal modes for Ba\~{n}ados, Teitelboim and Zanelli (BTZ) extremal black hole and we showed that the imaginary part of the frequency is zero. We obtain exact result for the scalar an fermionic perturbations. We also showed that the frequency is bounded from below for the existence of the normal modes (non-dissipative modes).Comment: 6 pp. Accepted Classical and Quantum Gravity. Induced parity violating thermal effective action for (2+1)-dimensional fermions interacting with a non-Abelian background

We study the parity breaking effective action in 2+1 dimensions, generated, at finite temperature, by massive fermions interacting with a non-Abelian gauge background. We explicitly calculate, in the static limit, parity violating amplitudes up to the seven point function, which allows us to determine the corresponding effective actions. We derive the exact parity violating effective action when E⃗=0\vec{E}=0. When E⃗≠0\vec{E}\neq 0, there are families of terms that can be determined order by order in perturbation theory. We attempt to generalize our results to non-static backgrounds through the use of time ordered exponentials and prove gauge invariance, both {\it small} and {\it large}, of the resulting effective action. We also point out some open questions that need to be further understood.Comment: 24 pages. Fermions scattering in a three dimensional extreme black hole background

    Get PDF
The absorption cross section for scattering of fermions off an extreme BTZ black hole is calculated. It is shown that, as in the case of scalar particles, an extreme BTZ black hole exhibits a vanishing absorption cross section, which is consistent with the vanishing entropy of such object. Additionally, we give a general argument to prove that the particle flux near the horizon is zero. Finally we show that the {\it reciprocal space} introduced previously in \cite{gm} gives rise to the same result and, therefore, it could be considered as the space where the scattering process takes place in an AdS spacetime.Comment: 15 pages, RevTex4.
