    Dynamical Monte Carlo Study of Equilibrium Polymers : Static Properties

    We report results of extensive Dynamical Monte Carlo investigations on self-assembled Equilibrium Polymers (EP) without loops in good solvent. (This is thought to provide a good model of giant surfactant micelles.) Using a novel algorithm we are able to describe efficiently both static and dynamic properties of systems in which the mean chain length \Lav is effectively comparable to that of laboratory experiments (up to 5000 monomers, even at high polymer densities). We sample up to scission energies of E/kBT=15E/k_BT=15 over nearly three orders of magnitude in monomer density ϕ\phi, and present a detailed crossover study ranging from swollen EP chains in the dilute regime up to dense molten systems. Confirming recent theoretical predictions, the mean-chain length is found to scale as \Lav \propto \phi^\alpha \exp(\delta E) where the exponents approach αd=δd=1/(1+γ)0.46\alpha_d=\delta_d=1/(1+\gamma) \approx 0.46 and αs=1/2[1+(γ1)/(νd1)]0.6,δs=1/2\alpha_s = 1/2 [1+(\gamma-1)/(\nu d -1)] \approx 0.6, \delta_s=1/2 in the dilute and semidilute limits respectively. The chain length distribution is qualitatively well described in the dilute limit by the Schulz-Zimm distribution \cN(s)\approx s^{\gamma-1} \exp(-s) where the scaling variable is s=\gamma L/\Lav. The very large size of these simulations allows also an accurate determination of the self-avoiding walk susceptibility exponent γ1.165±0.01\gamma \approx 1.165 \pm 0.01. .......     Estimation of sea-surface temperature around southern Africa from satellite-derived microwave observations

    Sea-surface temperatures may give strong indications of the location of fronts, currents, eddies and other components of ocean circulation. This has been recognized in particular for the seas around southern Africa. Almost all studies using this property have employed measurements of thermal infrared radiation from orbiting satellites. This has distinct disadvantages due to the shading effect of persistent cloud cover. Another option is to use microwave observations, which are not affected by cloud cover. Until recently, however, the spatial resolution of microwave data was far too coarse for the purpose of studying ocean circulation in detail. We describe here a new set of microwave data that does not have this disadvantage, and show how useful it is by describing examples of local applications

    Sea-surface temperatures at the sub-Antarctic islands Marion and Gough during the past 50 years

    Sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) have been measured at Marion and Gough islands for nearly 50 years. These are some of the longest records of their kind in the sub-Antarctic. We present the trend, the seasonal cycle, and the time-frequency characteristics of the SST for both islands, which rose by 1.4°C at Marion Island and by 0.5°C at Gough Island over the 50-year period. Intermittent temperature oscillations, with periods of between 1 and 5 years, were observed throughout the record. A 5-year periodicity, compatible with an Antarctic CircumpolarWave signature, dominated after 1990 in both records. We also observed a strong low-frequency component with a period varying from 9.3 to 11.4 years at Marion Island, and a much weaker component with a period varying from 9.9 to 11.8 years at Gough Island

    Reactions at polymer interfaces: A Monte Carlo Simulation

    Reactions at a strongly segregated interface of a symmetric binary polymer blend are investigated via Monte Carlo simulations. End functionalized homopolymers of different species interact at the interface instantaneously and irreversibly to form diblock copolymers. The simulations, in the framework of the bond fluctuation model, determine the time dependence of the copolymer production in the initial and intermediate time regime for small reactant concentration ρ0Rg3=0.163...0.0406\rho_0 R_g^3=0.163 ... 0.0406. The results are compared to recent theories and simulation data of a simple reaction diffusion model. For the reactant concentration accessible in the simulation, no linear growth of the copolymer density is found in the initial regime, and a t\sqrt{t}-law is observed in the intermediate stage.Comment: to appear in Macromolecule

    The reversible polydisperse Parking Lot Model

    We use a new version of the reversible Parking Lot Model to study the compaction of vibrated polydisperse media. The particle sizes are distributed according to a truncated power law. We introduce a self-consistent desorption mechanism with a hierarchical initialization of the system. In this way, we approach densities close to unity. The final density depends on the polydispersity of the system as well as on the initialization and will reach a maximum value for a certain exponent in the power law.Comment: 7 pages, Latex, 12 figure

    Monitoring the oceanic flow between Africa and Antarctica: Report of the first GoodHope cruise

    The southern ocean plays a major role in the global oceanic circulation role in the global oceanic circulation, as a component of the Meridional Overturning Circulation, and it is postulated that it has a great influence on present-day climate. However, our understanding of its complex three-dimensional dynamics and of the impact of its variability on the climate system is rudimentary. The newly constituted, international GoodHope research venture aims to address this knowledge gap by establishing a programme of regular observations across the Southern Ocean between the African and Antarctic continents. The objectives of this programme are fivefold: (1) to improve understanding of Indo-Atlantic inter-ocean exchanges and their impact on the global thermohaline circulation and thus on global climate change; (2) to understand in more detail the influence these exchanges have on the climate variability of the southern African subcontinent; (3) to monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current; (4) to study air–sea exchanges and their role on the global heat budget, with particular emphasis on the intense exchanges occurring within the Agulhas Retroflection region south of South Africa, and (5) to examine the role of major frontal systems as areas of elevated biological activity and as biogeographical barriers to the distribution of plankton. We present here preliminary results on the physical and biological structure of the frontal systems using the first GoodHope transect that was completed during February–March 2004

    On Sharp Large Deviations for the bridge of a general Diffusion

    We provide sharp Large Deviation estimates for the probability of exit from a domain for the bridge of a dd-dimensional general diffusion process XX, as the conditioning time tends to 00. This kind of results is motivated by applications to numerical simulation. In particular we investigate the influence of the drift bb of XX. It turns out that the sharp asymptotics for the exit time probability are independent of the drift, provided bb enjoyes a simple condition that is always satisfied in dimension 11. On the other hand, we show that the drift can be influential if this assumption is not satisfied.

    Drug trials in children engage with many ethical issues, from drug-related safety concerns to communication with patients and parents, and recruitment and informed consent procedures. This paper addresses the field of neuromuscular disorders where the possibility of genetic, mutation-specific treatments, has added new complexity. Not only must trial design address issues of equity of access, but researchers must also think through the implications of adopting a personalised medicine approach, which requires a precise molecular diagnosis, in addition to other implications of developing orphan drugs. It is against this background of change and complexity that the Project Ethics Council (PEC) was established within the TREAT-NMD EU Network of Excellence. The PEC is a high level advisory group that draws upon the expertise of its interdisciplinary membership which includes clinicians, lawyers, scientists, parents, representatives of patient organisations, social scientists and ethicists. In this paper we describe the establishment and terms of reference of the PEC, give an indication of the range and depth of its work and provide some analysis of the kinds of complex questions encountered. The paper describes how the PEC has responded to substantive ethical issues raised within the TREAT-NMD consortium and how it has provided a wider resource for any concerned parent, patient, or clinician to ask a question of ethical concern. Issues raised range from science related ethical issues, issues related to hereditary neuromuscular diseases and the new therapeutic approaches and questions concerning patients rights in the context of patient registries and bio-banks. We conclude by recommending the PEC as a model for similar research contexts in rare diseases
