A terminal assessment of stages theory : introducing a dynamic states approach to entrepreneurship
Stages of Growth models were the most frequent theoretical approach to understanding entrepreneurial business growth from 1962 to 2006; they built on the growth imperative and developmental models of that time. An analysis of the universe of such models (N=104) published in the management literature shows no consensus on basic constructs of the approach, nor is there any empirical confirmations of stages theory. However, by changing two propositions of the stages models, a new dynamic states approach is derived. The dynamic states approach has far greater explanatory power than its precursor, and is compatible with leading edge research in entrepreneurship
The deindustrialisation/tertiarisation hypothesis reconsidered: a subsystem application to the OECD7
The diffusion of outsourcing, both national and international, and
vertical FDIs among manufacturing firms, along with the higher integra-
tion of business services in manufacturing, has recently led to question
the empirical evidence supporting the Deindustrialisation/Tertiarisation
(DT) hypothesis. Rather than a \real" phenomenon, it has been argued,
DT would be an \apparent" one, mainly due to the reorganization of
production across national and sectoral boundaries.
The empirical studies that have dealt with the topic so far have
not been able to effectively rule out such possibility, because of two
main limitations: the sectoral level of the analysis and/or the national
focus. In order to overcome them, the paper carries out an appreciative
investigation of the actual extent of the DT occurred in the OECD
area over the '80s and the '90s by moving from a sector to a subsystem
perspective, thus retaining both direct and indirect relations, and by
referring to a \pseudo-World" of 7 OECD countries, thus taking into
account the \global" dimension of the phenomenon.
The results strongly support the DT hypothesis: although the weight
of business sector services in the manufacturing subsystem increased,
acting as a counterbalancing tendency to the manufacturing decline,
subsystem shares significantly decreased, thus confirming DT as a more
fundamental trend of modern economies
A Framework for city leadership in multilevel governance settings: the comparative contexts of Italy and the UK
This paper discusses the role of city leadership in the current multilevel governance settings and provides a conceptual framework for understanding the main elements of city leadership. Forms of political, managerial and civic leadership have been distinguished within city leadership and the main actors, structures, processes and followership
patterns are examined using Italy and the UK as starting points of
comparison. This comparative framework sheds a light on some common and different features in the city leadership patterns in Italy and the UK, such as the cross-cutting and multilayered administrative context for public service delivery; the common trend towards strengthening the executive side of political leadership rather
than the representative one; the growing relevance of forms of civic leadership as a trigger for creating public and social value and for enhancing the resilience of the territories. Main differences deal instead with the role of central government in defining the role of city leaders, where Italy seems to experience a return towards greater centralization and controls, and the UK is experiencing an opposite trend towards the
empowerment of local communities. Finally, the paper sets out some future directions for the research agenda on city leadership we are seeking to pursue
Broker Fixed: The Racialized Social Structure and the Subjugation of Indigenous Populations in the Andes
Responding to calls to return racial analysis to indigenous Latin America, this article moves beyond the prejudicial attitudes of dominant groups to specify how native subordination gets perpetuated as a normal outcome of the organization of society. I argue that a naturalized system of indirect rule racially subordinates native populations through creating the position of mestizo “authoritarian intermediary.” Natives must depend on these cultural brokers for their personhood, while maintaining this privileged position requires facilitating indigenous exploitation. Institutional structures combine with cultural practices to generate a vicious cycle in which increased village intermediary success increases native marginalization. This racialized social structure explains my ethnographic findings that indigenous villagers continued to support the same coterie of mestizos despite their regular and sometimes extreme acts of peculation. My findings about the primacy of race suggest new directions for research into indigenous studies, ethnic mobilizations, and the global dimensions of racial domination
From Mexico to Beijing: "Women in Development" Twenty Five Years On
During the past twenty five years the Women in Development (WID)approach has become an increasingly important issue in the literature on Third World development. WID issues and related activities have now been incorporated into the aid practice of most development agencies. This paper critically analyses the diverse and conflicting ideologies that have emerged in the WID literature since the early seventies
This paper analyzes the process of the Brazilian developmentalism between the classical phase of the 1950s to the current perspective of new developmentalism, emphasizing the role and function played by the theme of democracy and distributive inclusion in every arrangement. In the first section, it is analyzed the semantic constellation involving the terms progress and development, seeking to separate them from the process / project called developmentalism. In the second section, it is discussed the phases and the central features of the old and the new Brazilian developmentalism and the prospect of their subdivision into three historical waves, separated by the political democratic aspect and by the theme of redistribution. Finally it presents some considerations about the new developmentalism in its democratic-inclusive arrangement
