Evaluation of potassium titanate as a component of alkaline fuel cell matrices
Various forms of potassium titanate were found to have almost complete resistance to chemical attack in 45 wt % KOH at 150 C (423 K) for up to 9600 hours. Electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction disclosed important differences with respect to fibricity and stability. The octatitanate appeared to possess the best combination of properties. It was concluded that potassium titanate could be produced in a more asbestos-like form. Fiber dispersion is important in matrix manufacture

Infinite families of superintegrable systems separable in subgroup coordinates
A method is presented that makes it possible to embed a subgroup separable
superintegrable system into an infinite family of systems that are integrable
and exactly-solvable. It is shown that in two dimensional Euclidean or
pseudo-Euclidean spaces the method also preserves superintegrability. Two
infinite families of classical and quantum superintegrable systems are obtained
in two-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space whose classical trajectories and
quantum eigenfunctions are investigated. In particular, the wave-functions are
expressed in terms of Laguerre and generalized Bessel polynomials.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure
Tight bounds for break minimization
We consider round-robin sports tournaments with n teams and n − 1 rounds. We construct an infinite family of opponent schedules for which every home-away assignment induces at least 1/4 n(n−2) breaks. This construction establishes a matching lower bound for a corresponding upper bound from the literature
Acceleration of phenological advance and warming with latitude over the past century.
In the Northern Hemisphere, springtime events are frequently reported as advancing more rapidly at higher latitudes, presumably due to an acceleration of warming with latitude. However, this assumption has not been investigated in an analytical framework that simultaneously examines acceleration of warming with latitude while accounting for variation in phenological time series characteristics that might also co-vary with latitude. We analyzed 743 phenological trend estimates spanning 86 years and 42.6 degrees of latitude in the Northern Hemisphere, as well as rates of Northern Hemisphere warming over the same period and latitudinal range. We detected significant patterns of co-variation in phenological time series characteristics that may confound estimates of the magnitude of variation in trends with latitude. Notably, shorter and more recent time series tended to produce the strongest phenological trends, and these also tended to be from higher latitude studies. However, accounting for such variation only slightly modified the relationship between rates of phenological advance and latitude, which was highly significant. Furthermore, warming has increased non-linearly with latitude over the past several decades, most strongly since 1998 and northward of 59°N latitude. The acceleration of warming with latitude has likely contributed to an acceleration of phenological advance along the same gradient
Mobilizing Public Will For Social Change
Examines the theory and strategies of "public will" campaigns and offers tangible criteria for their evaluation. It provides a rich inventory of strategies for use in mobilizing the public will through an integration of models of agenda building, social problem construction, issues management, social movements, media advocacy, and social capital. In addition, the paper provides cases and examples of public will campaigns directed at various social problems, along with criteria for evaluating these campaigns at various stages of a social problem's life cycle
‘Fighting a ghost’: Collecting data and creating knowledge on sex trafficking in the League of Nations between 1921 and 1939
This article analyses the understanding of sex trafficking in the League of Nations, with a focus on how the League collected data, critically dealt with its own data collection, and created a particular image of sex trafficking. I argue that a shift can be discerned in the debates within the Advisory Committee on Traffic of Women and Children, which was responsible for the study of sex trafficking in the League of Nations. Starting in 1921, the Advisory Committee focused on the mobility of women as a major factor in sex trafficking. After an ‘undercover investigation’ in 1927, their attention shifted to security. When the Advisory Committee researched the causes of prostitution in 1934, it finally considered prevention. The Advisory Committee was faced with different challenges and tensions that shaped the knowledge that it produced about sex trafficking. By analysing the minutes of their meetings, I lay bare that process of knowledge creation. Through the method of frame analysis and the concept of ‘biopolitics’, I intend to add to the existing historiographical scholarship on transnational cooperation and the League of Nations with an intersectional approach
Energy-momentum conservation in pre-metric electrodynamics with magnetic charges
A necessary and sufficient condition for energy-momentum conservation is
proved within a topological, pre-metric approach to classical electrodynamics
including magnetic as well as electric charges. The extended Lorentz force,
consisting of mutual actions by F=(E, B) on the electric current and G=(H, D)
on the magnetic current, can be derived from an energy-momentum "potential" if
and only if the constitutive relation G=G(F) satisfies a certain vanishing
condition. The electric-magnetic reciprocity introduced by Hehl and Obukhov is
seen to define a complex structure on the tensor product of 2-form pairs (F,G)
which is independent of but consistent with the Hodge star operator defined by
any Lorentzian metric. Contrary to a recent claim in the literature, it does
not define a complex structure on the space of 2-forms itself.Comment: 8 pages, 1 fugur
