Can WIMP Dark Matter overcome the Nightmare Scenario?
Even if new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) indeed exists, the energy
scale of new physics might be beyond the reach at the Large Hadron Collider
(LHC) and the LHC could find only the Higgs boson but nothing else. This is the
so-called "nightmare scenario". On the other hand, the existence of the dark
matter has been established from various observations. One of the promising
candidates for thermal relic dark matter is a stable and electric
charge-neutral Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) with the mass below
the TeV scale. In the nightmare scenario, we introduce a WIMP dark matter
singlet under the SM gauge group, which only couples to the Higgs doublet at
the lowest order, and investigate a possibility that such WIMP dark matter can
be a clue to overcome the nightmare scenario via various phenomenological tests
such as the dark matter relic abundance, the direct detection experiments for
the dark matter particle, and the production of the dark matter particle at the

Microscopic analysis of the chemical reaction between Fe(Te,Se) thin films and underlying CaF
To understand the chemical reaction at the interface of materials, we
performed a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation in four types of
Fe(Te,Se) superconducting thin films prepared on different types of substrates:
CaF2 substrate, CaF2 substrate with a CaF2 buffer layer, CaF2 substrate with a
FeSe buffer layer, and a LaAlO3 substrate with a CaF2 buffer layer. Based on
the energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) analysis, we found possible
interdiffusion between fluorine and selenium that has a strong influence on the
superconductivity in Fe(Te,Se) films. The chemical interdiffusion also plays a
significant role in the variation of the lattice parameters. The lattice
parameters of the Fe(Te,Se) thin films are primarily determined by the chemical
substitution of anions, and the lattice mismatch only plays a secondary role.Comment: 30 pages, 9 figur

A Dendroecological Analysis of Forest Dynamics for Old-Growth Abies-Tsuga-Quercus on the Boso Peninsula, Southeastern Japan
This study investigated the composition, age-and size-structure, and tree-ring relationships for an old-growth, warm-temperate, mixed-evergreen forest at the University of Tokyo Chiba Forest, Japan. A total of 32 tree species were recorded, which was dominated by Abies firma and Quercus acuta. Tsuga sieboldii dominated the recruitment after 1850, followed by Abies firma. After 1920, many individuals of Castanopsis, Cinnamomum, Cleyera and Quercus became established. The temporal pattern of conifer recruitment did not correspond to the record of strong wind events. Basal area increment in Abies firma and Castanopsis sieboldii trees increased throughout their lives, a trend not seen in the ring width index. Mean annual temperature was below the 100-year mean between 1920 and 1940 and 1960-1980, but increased rather abruptly after 1980. Mean annual precipitation decreased after 1960. Tree-ring releases are very common at the study forest, which are indicative of frequent small to moderate-sized disturbances. At least one release was recorded in every decade from 1890 to the present day, which is likely the primary causal factor promoting tree growth and recruitment. Our results suggest that early logging activities coupled with natural disturbances had a great influence on the developmental process and current structure of the study stand and that tree growth is varying in a manner consistent with forest dynamics. © 2017 by The Tree-Ring Society.This item is part of the Tree-Ring Research (formerly Tree-Ring Bulletin) archive. In Vivo Function and Evolution of the Eutherian-Specific Pluripotency Marker UTF1
Embryogenesis in placental mammals is sustained by exquisite interplay between the embryo proper and placenta. UTF1 is a developmentally regulated gene expressed in both cell lineages. Here, we analyzed the consequence of loss of the UTF1 gene during mouse development. We found that homozygous UTF1 mutant newborn mice were significantly smaller than wild-type or heterozygous mutant mice, suggesting that placental insufficiency caused by the loss of UTF1 expression in extra-embryonic ectodermal cells at least in part contributed to this phenotype. We also found that the effects of loss of UTF1 expression in embryonic stem cells on their pluripotency were very subtle. Genome structure and sequence comparisons revealed that the UTF1 gene exists only in placental mammals. Our analyses of a family of genes with homology to UTF1 revealed a possible mechanism by which placental mammals have evolved the UTF1 genes.This study was supported in part by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and mostly by the Support

Differential Expressions of Adhesive Molecules and Proteases Define Mechanisms of Ovarian Tumor Cell Matrix Penetration/Invasion
Epithelial ovarian cancer is an aggressive and deadly disease and understanding its invasion mechanisms is critical for its treatment. We sought to study the penetration/invasion of ovarian tumor cells into extracellular matrices (ECMs) using a fibroblast-derived three-dimensional (3D) culture model and time-lapse and confocal imaging. Twelve ovarian tumor cells were evaluated and classified into distinct groups based on their ECM remodeling phenotypes; those that degraded the ECM (represented by OVCAR5 cells) and those that did not (represented by OVCAR10 cells). Cells exhibiting a distinct ECM modifying behavior were also segregated by epithelial- or mesenchymal-like phenotypes and uPA or MMP-2/MMP-9 expression. The cells, which presented epithelial-like phenotypes, penetrated the ECM using proteases and maintained intact cell-cell interactions, while cells exhibiting mesenchymal phenotypes modified the matrices via Rho-associated serine/threonine kinase (ROCK) in the absence of apparent cell-cell interactions. Overall, this study demonstrates that different mechanisms of modifying matrices by ovarian tumor cells may reflect heterogeneity among tumors and emphasize the need to systematically assess these mechanisms to better design effective therapies
Seesaw Neutrino Signals at the Large Hadron Collider
We discuss the scenario with gauge singlet fermions (right-handed neutrinos)
accessible at the energy of the Large Hadron Collider. The singlet fermions
generate tiny neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism and also have sizable
couplings to the standard-model particles. We demonstrate that these two facts,
which are naively not satisfied simultaneously, are reconciled in the
five-dimensional framework in various fashions, which make the seesaw mechanism
observable. The collider signal of tri-lepton final states with transverse
missing energy is investigated for two explicit examples of the observable
seesaw, taking account of three types of neutrino mass spectrum and the
constraint from lepton flavor violation. We find by showing the significance of
signal discovery that the collider experiment has a potential to find signals
of extra dimensions and the origin of small neutrino masses.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figure
