Monetary Integration in East Asia: Issues of Economic and Policy Convergence in a Comparative Context
In recent years, Asian policymakers have considered the possibility of promoting closer financial integration and, possibly, monetary union. This paper considers the economics of the decision to form a currency union in East Asia using the European experience as a benchmark. We also compare the appropriateness of an East Asian currency union to MERCOSUR. In sum, we find that a core group of five East Asian countries appear to meet the convergence criteria set out in the Maastricht Treaty, whereas some of the others are moving toward that goal. PT-symmetry in honeycomb photonic lattices
We apply gain/loss to honeycomb photonic lattices and show that the
dispersion relation is identical to tachyons - particles with imaginary mass
that travel faster than the speed of light. This is accompanied by PT-symmetry
breaking in this structure. We further show that the PT-symmetry can be
restored by deforming the lattice
Detection of Candida species in vaginal samples in a clinical laboratory setting.
OBJECTIVE: To present the detection rates of Candida species in vaginal samples from patients visiting physicians. METHODS: The presence of C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis in 3978 vaginal swabs from patients in six US states was detected by PCR amplification. RESULTS: Candida DNA was detected in 33.1% of the population studied. Of the 1316 positive samples, 80.2% contained C. albicans, 14.3% contained C. glabrata, 5.9% contained C. parapsilosis and 8.0% contained C. tropicalis. Comparing samples by patients' state of residence revealed an association with the detection of C. glabrata (p = 0.029). Comparing samples by patients' age revealed a decrease in the overall detection of Candida (p < 0.001) and C. albicans (p < 0.001), concomitant with an increase in the detection of C. glabrata (p < 0.001) and C. parapsilosis (p = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: These results provide geographic- and age-specific data on four Candida species associated with vaginitis
Structural and Functional Consequences of the Weak Binding of Chlorin e6 to Bovine Rhodopsin.
The chlorophyll-derivative chlorin e6 (Ce6) identified in the retinas of deep-sea ocean fish is proposed to play a functional role in red bioluminescence detection. Fluorescence and 1 H NMR spectroscopy studies with the bovine dim-light photoreceptor, rhodopsin, indicate that Ce6 weakly binds to it with ÎĽm affinity. Absorbance spectra prove that red light sensitivity enhancement is not brought about by a shift in the absorbance maximum of rhodopsin. 19 F NMR experiments with samples where 19 F labels are either placed at the cytoplasmic binding site or incorporated as fluorinated retinal indicate that the cytoplasmic domain is highly perturbed by binding, while little to no changes are detected near the retinal. Binding of Ce6 also inhibits G-protein activation. Chemical shift changes in 1 H-15 N NMR spectroscopy of 15 N-Trp labeled bovine rhodopsin reveal that Ce6 binding perturbs the entire structure. These results provide experimental evidence that Ce6 is an allosteric modulator of rhodopsin
