    THU0600 a case of systemic sclerosis complicated by renal crisis: potential etiopathogenetic role of cytomegalovirus and treatment

    Background: Scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) is a rare complication of systemic sclerosis (SSc), which can be triggered by viruses, such as Cytomegalovirus (CMV). SRC presents as a new-onset accelerated-phase hypertension with/without rapidly progressive renal failure. Objectives: Here we describe the case of a patient developing SSc complicated by the appearance of SRC after a recent episode of acute Cytomegalovirus infection. Methods: A 66-year-old male was referred to our Scleroderma Unit in March 2019. He presented with widespread skin rash, exertional dyspnoea and peripheral oedemas. He reported a myocarditis due to CMV occurred in October 2018. Antibodies anti-CMV IgM were detected in his serum. The patient developed a progressive cutaneous involvement characterized by diffuse oedema, sclerosis and melanoderma. Subsequently, Raynaud’s phenomenon, puffy hands and pitting scars

    Self-Assembled Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces as moulds for Photonic Band Gap Materials

    We propose systems with structures defined by self-assembled triply periodic minimal surfaces (STPMS) as candidates for photonic bandgap materials. To support our proposal we have calculated the photonic bands for different STPMS and we have found that, at least, the double diamond and gyroid structures present full photonic bandgaps. Given the great variety of systems which crystalize in these structures, the diversity of possible materials that form them and the range of lattice constants they present, the construction of photonic bandgap materials with gaps in the visible range may be presently within reach.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, RevTe

    Asthma is characterised by reversible airway obstruction. In most patients, control of disease activity is easily achieved. However, in a small minority, asthma may be fatal. Between the two extremes lie patients with severe asthmatic attacks, refractory to standard treatment. These patients are at an increased risk of recurrent severe attacks, with respiratory failure, and mechanical ventilation. Invasive mechanical ventilation of the asthmatic patient is associated with a higher risk of complications and, therefore, is a measure of last resort. Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) is another treatment modality that may be beneficial in patients with severe asthmatic attack who are at an increased risk of developing respiratory failure. These patients have the potential to benefit from early respiratory support in the form of NPPV. However, reports of NPPV in asthmatic patients are scarce, and its usage in asthmatic attacks is, therefore, still controversial. Only a few reports of NPPV in asthma have been published over the last decade. These studies mostly involve small numbers of patients and those who have problematic methodology. In this article we review the available evidence for NPPV in asthma and try to formulate our recommendations for NPPV application in asthma based on the available evidence and reports

    The complex cations [Ru(C7H16N2)(C10H14)Cl]+, [Ru(C7H16N2)(C6H6)Cl]+, [Ru(C9H18N2)(C6H6)Cl]+, [Ru(C9H18N2)(C10H14)Cl]+ and [Ru(C14H16N2)(C10H14)Cl]+ have been synthesised from the reaction between the ruthenium-arene complexes [with C6H6 (benzene) or C10H14 (p-cymene)] and the respective chiral diamines [C7H16N2=(S)-(?)-2-aminomethyl-1-ethylpyrrolidine, C9H18N2=(S)-(+)-2-(pyrrolidinylmethyl)-pyrrolidine, or C14H16N2=(1R,2R)-(+)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine], isolated and characterised as chloride salts using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All complexes were fully characterised by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, 13C and 1H NMR, and also found to exhibit catalytic activity in the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol at 50 °C (enantiomeric excesses range from ca. 25% to 60%, and conversions from ca. 30% to 50%)
