Effective-Range Expansion of the Neutron-Deuteron Scattering Studied by a Quark-Model Nonlocal Gaussian Potential
The S-wave effective range parameters of the neutron-deuteron (nd) scattering
are derived in the Faddeev formalism, using a nonlocal Gaussian potential based
on the quark-model baryon-baryon interaction fss2. The spin-doublet low-energy
eigenphase shift is sufficiently attractive to reproduce predictions by the
AV18 plus Urbana three-nucleon force, yielding the observed value of the
doublet scattering length and the correct differential cross sections below the
deuteron breakup threshold. This conclusion is consistent with the previous
result for the triton binding energy, which is nearly reproduced by fss2

The onset of the vortex-like Nernst signal above Tc in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 and Bi_2Sr_{2-y}La_yCuO_6
The diffusion of vortices down a thermal gradient produces a Josephson signal
which is detected as the vortex Nernst effect. In a recent report, Xu et al.,
Nature 406, 486 (2000), an enhanced Nernst signal identified with vortex-like
excitations was observed in a series of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) crystals at
temperatures 50-100 K above T_c. To pin down the onset temperature T_{\nu} of
the vortex-like signal in the lightly doped regime (0.03 < x < 0.07), we have
re-analyzed in detail the carrier contribution to the Nernst signal. By
supplementing new Nernst measurements with thermopower and Hall-angle data, we
isolate the off-diagonal Peltier conductivity \alpha_{xy} and show that its
profile provides an objective determination of T_{\nu}. With the new results,
we revise the phase diagram for the fluctuation regime in LSCO to accomodate
the lightly doped regime. In the cuprate Bi_2Sr_{2-y}La_yCuO_6, we find that
the carrier contribution is virtually negligible for y in the range 0.4-0.6.
The evidence for an extended temperature interval with vortex-like excitations
is even stronger in this system. Finally, we discuss how T_{\nu} relates to the
pseudogap temperature T* and the implications of strong fluctuations between
the pseudogap state and the d-wave superconducting state.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
An additive subfamily of enlargements of a maximally monotone operator
We introduce a subfamily of additive enlargements of a maximally monotone
operator. Our definition is inspired by the early work of Simon Fitzpatrick.
These enlargements constitute a subfamily of the family of enlargements
introduced by Svaiter. When the operator under consideration is the
subdifferential of a convex lower semicontinuous proper function, we prove that
some members of the subfamily are smaller than the classical
-subdifferential enlargement widely used in convex analysis. We also
recover the epsilon-subdifferential within the subfamily. Since they are all
additive, the enlargements in our subfamily can be seen as structurally closer
to the -subdifferential enlargement
Deconstructing the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender victim of sex trafficking: Harm, exceptionality and religion–sexuality tensions
Contrary to widespread belief, sex trafficking also targets lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) communities. Contemporary social and political constructions of victimhood lie at the heart of regulatory policies on sex trafficking. Led by the US Department of State, knowledge about LGBT victims of trafficking constitutes the newest frontier in the expansion of criminalization measures. These measures represent a crucial shift. From a burgeoning range of preemptive measures enacted to protect an amorphous class of ‘all potential victims’, now policies are heavily premised on the risk posed by traffickers to ‘victims of special interest’. These constructed identities, however, are at odds with established structures. Drawing on a range of literatures, the core task of this article is to confront some of the complexities and tensions surrounding constructions of LGBT trafficking victims. Specifically, the article argues that discourses of ‘exceptional vulnerability’ and the polarized notions of ‘innocence’ and ‘guilt’ inform hierarchies of victimhood. Based on these insights, the article argues for the need to move beyond monolithic understandings of victims, by reframing the politics of harm accordingly
Iteratively regularized Newton-type methods for general data misfit functionals and applications to Poisson data
We study Newton type methods for inverse problems described by nonlinear
operator equations in Banach spaces where the Newton equations
are regularized variationally using a general
data misfit functional and a convex regularization term. This generalizes the
well-known iteratively regularized Gauss-Newton method (IRGNM). We prove
convergence and convergence rates as the noise level tends to 0 both for an a
priori stopping rule and for a Lepski{\u\i}-type a posteriori stopping rule.
Our analysis includes previous order optimal convergence rate results for the
IRGNM as special cases. The main focus of this paper is on inverse problems
with Poisson data where the natural data misfit functional is given by the
Kullback-Leibler divergence. Two examples of such problems are discussed in
detail: an inverse obstacle scattering problem with amplitude data of the
far-field pattern and a phase retrieval problem. The performence of the
proposed method for these problems is illustrated in numerical examples
Semiconductor-cavity QED in high-Q regimes: Detuning effect
The non-resonant interaction between the high-density excitons in a quantum
well and a single mode cavity field is investigated. An analytical expression
for the physical spectrum of the excitons is obtained. The spectral properties
of the excitons, which are initially prepared in the number states or the
superposed states of the two different number states by the resonant
femtosecond pulse pumping experiment, are studied. Numerical study of the
physical spectrum is carried out and a discussion of the detuning effect is

Integrity of H1 helix in prion protein revealed by molecular dynamic simulations to be especially vulnerable to changes in the relative orientation of H1 and its S1 flank
In the template-assistance model, normal prion protein (PrPC), the pathogenic
cause of prion diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob (CJD) in human, Bovine
Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in cow, and scrapie in sheep, converts to
infectious prion (PrPSc) through an autocatalytic process triggered by a
transient interaction between PrPC and PrPSc. Conventional studies suggest the
S1-H1-S2 region in PrPC to be the template of S1-S2 -sheet in PrPSc, and
the conformational conversion of PrPC into PrPSc may involve an unfolding of H1
in PrPC and its refolding into the -sheet in PrPSc. Here we conduct a
series of simulation experiments to test the idea of transient interaction of
the template-assistance model. We find that the integrity of H1 in PrPC is
vulnerable to a transient interaction that alters the native dihedral angles at
residue Asn, which connects the S1 flank to H1, but not to interactions
that alter the internal structure of the S1 flank, nor to those that alter the
relative orientation between H1 and the S2 flank.Comment: A major revision on statistical analysis method has been made. The

Analysis of the potential of cancer cell lines to release tissue factor-containing microvesicles: correlation with tissue factor and PAR2 expression
BackgroundDespite the association of cancer-derived circulating tissue factor (TF)-containing microvesicles and hypercoagulable state, correlations with the incidence of thrombosis remain unclear.MethodsIn this study the upregulation of TF release upon activation of various cancer cell lines, and the correlation with TF and PAR2 expression and/or activity was examined. Microvesicle release was induced by PAR2 activation in seventeen cell lines and released microvesicle density, microvesicle-associated TF activity, and phoshpatidylserine-mediated activity were measured. The time-course for TF release was monitored over 90 min in each cell line. In addition, TF mRNA expression, cellular TF protein and cell-surface TF activities were quantified. Moreover, the relative expression of PAR2 mRNA and cellular protein were analysed. Any correlations between the above parameters were examined by determining the Pearson’s correlation coefficients.ResultsTF release as microvesicles peaked between 30–60 min post-activation in the majority of cell lines tested. Archiving multi-epoch data and the discovery of variables in the near infrared
We present a description of the design and usage of a new synoptic pipeline
and database model for time series photometry in the VISTA Data Flow System
(VDFS). All UKIRT-WFCAM data and most of the VISTA main survey data will be
processed and archived by the VDFS. Much of these data are multi-epoch, useful
for finding moving and variable objects. Our new database design allows the
users to easily find rare objects of these types amongst the huge volume of
data being produced by modern survey telescopes. Its effectiveness is
demonstrated through examples using Data Release 5 of the UKIDSS Deep
Extragalactic Survey (DXS) and the WFCAM standard star data. The synoptic
pipeline provides additional quality control and calibration to these data in
the process of generating accurate light-curves. We find that 0.6+-0.1% of
stars and 2.3+-0.6% of galaxies in the UKIDSS-DXS with K<15 mag are variable
