Quantum order by disorder in frustrated diamond lattice antiferromagnets
We present a quantum theory of frustrated diamond lattice antiferromagnets.
Considering quantum fluctuations as the predominant mechanism relieving spin
frustration, we find a rich phase diagram comprising of six phases with
coplanar spiral ordering in addition to the N\'eel phase. By computing the
specific heat of these ordered phases, we obtain a remarkable agreement between
-spiral ordering and the experimental specific heat data for the
diamond lattice spinel compounds MnScS, CoO and CoRhO,
i.e. specific heat data is a strong evidence for -spiral ordering in
all of these materials. This prediction can be tested in future neutron
scattering experiments on CoO and CoRhO, and is consistent with
existing neutron scattering data on MnScS. Based on this agreement we
infer a monotonically increasing relationship between frustration and the
strength of quantum fluctuations.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, version published in PR
Uncovering the Hidden Order in URu2Si2 by Impurity Doping
We report the use of impurities to probe the hidden order parameter of the
strongly correlated metal URu_2Si_2 below the transition temperature T_0 ~ 17.5
K. The nature of this order parameter has eluded researchers for more than two
decades, but is accompanied by the development of a partial gap in the single
particle density of states that can be detected through measurements of the
electronic specific heat and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. We find that
impurities in the hidden order phase give rise to local patches of
antiferromagnetism. An analysis of the coupling between the antiferromagnetism
and the hidden order reveals that the former is not a competing order parameter
but rather a parasitic effect of the latter.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Hybridization-driven gap in U3Bi4Ni3: a 209Bi NMR/NQR study
We report 209Bi NMR and NQR measurements on a single crystal of the Kondo
insulator U3Bi4Ni3. The 209Bi nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ()
shows activated behavior and is well-fit by a spin gap of 220 K. The 209Bi
Knight shift (K) exhibits a strong temperature dependence arising from 5f
electrons, in which K is negative at high temperatures and increases as the
temperature is lowered. Below 50 K, K shows a broad maximum and decreases
slightly upon further cooling. Our data provide insight into the evolution of
the hyperfine fields in a fully gapped Kondo insulator based on 5f electron
hybridization.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Complex Landau Ginzburg Theory of the Hidden Order in URu_2Si_2
We develop a Landau Ginzburg theory of the hidden order phase and the local
moment antiferromagnetic phase of URu_2Si_2. We unify the two broken symmetries
in a common complex order parameter and derive many experimentally relevant
consequences such as the topology of the phase diagram in magnetic field and
pressure. The theory accounts for the appearance of a moment under application
of stress and the thermal expansion anomaly across the phase transitions. It
identifies the low energy mode which is seen in the hidden order phase near the
conmensurate wavector (0,0, 1) as the pseudo-Goldstone mode of the approximate
U(1) symmetry.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Ovalbumin sensitization and challenge increases the number of lung cells possessing a mesenchymal stromal cell phenotype
Abstract Background Recent studies have indicated the presence of multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in human lung diseases. Excess airway smooth muscle, myofibroblasts and activated fibroblasts have each been noted in asthma, suggesting that mesenchymal progenitor cells play a role in asthma pathogenesis. We therefore sought to determine whether MSCs are present in the lungs of ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized and challenged mice, a model of allergic airways disease. Methods Balb/c mice were sensitized and challenged with PBS or OVA over a 25 day period. Flow cytometry as well as colony forming and differentiation potential were used to analyze the emergence of MSCs along with gene expression studies using immunochemical analyses, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and gene expression beadchips. Results A CD45-negative subset of cells expressed Stro-1, Sca-1, CD73 and CD105. Selection for these markers and negative selection against CD45 yielded a population of cells capable of adipogenic, osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation. Lungs from OVA-treated mice demonstrated a greater average colony forming unit-fibroblast (CFU-F) than control mice. Sorted cells differed from unsorted lung adherent cells, exhibiting a pattern of gene expression nearly identical to bone marrow-derived sorted cells. Finally, cells isolated from the bronchoalveolar lavage of a human asthma patient showed identical patterns of cell surface markers and differentiation potential. Conclusions In summary, allergen sensitization and challenge is accompanied by an increase of MSCs resident in the lungs that may regulate inflammatory and fibrotic responses.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/78265/1/1465-9921-11-127.xmlhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/78265/2/1465-9921-11-127.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/78265/3/1465-9921-11-127-S1.DOCPeer Reviewe
Higgs Phenomenology with CPsuperH
The MSSM contains CP-violating phases that may have important observable
effects in Higgs physics. We review recent highlights in Higgs phenomenology
obtained with the code CPsuperH, a useful tool for studies of the production,
mixing and decay of a coupled system of the neutral Higgs bosons at future high
energy colliders such as the LHC, ILC (LC), and a muon collider (MC).
CPsuperH implements the constraints from upper limits on electric dipole
moments, and may be extended to include other related low-energy observables,
such as b -> s \gamma and B -> K l l, and to compute the relic abundance of the
lightest neutralino.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX, 7 figures, invited article by Modern Physics Letters

Construction and validation of a questionnaire to assess student satisfaction with mathematics learning materials
Sixth Edition Technological Ecosystems for Enhancing MulticulturalityMathematics is an essential branch for the scientific development and its study is mandatory in most university degrees. However, currently the level of academic performance and motivation of students to learn this science is not the desired one. The students can use different learning tools inside and outside the math classroom, enhancing the quality of the learning materials that are designed essentially to facilitate the learning of mathematics. The present research project aims to determine the validity and reliability of a measurement instrument that allows theassessment of the satisfaction of the students with the availablelearning materials. To fulfill the objectives of this research, the method of survey was used. A study with a quantitative approach was developed, which led to the design and validation of a questionnaire by a group of 7 experts. The validation closed after applying a pilot study with 728 students. It concluded positively, obtaining nine factors that coincide with the revision of the literature: technological quality, quality of content, visual quality, didactic significance, adequacy of content, relationship between theory and practice, involvement, contribution to learning, relevance and interaction between educational actors. The results of this questionnaire provide to the international scientific community with relevant information for the design, selection, and use of study materials in the classrooms, which will contribute to raising the levels of student engagement, and their academic performance in mathematics, secondaril
