Expanded Very Large Arrays Observations of a Proto-Cluster of Molecular Gas-Rich Galaxies at z = 4.05
We present observations of the molecular gas in the GN20 proto-cluster of galaxies at z = 4.05 using the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA). This group of galaxies is the ideal laboratory for studying the formation of massive galaxies via luminous, gas-rich starbursts within 1.6 Gyr of the big bang. We detect three galaxies in the proto-cluster in CO 2-1 emission, with gas masses (H_2) between 10^(10) and 10^(11) × (α/0.8) M_⊙. The emission from the brightest source, GN20, is resolved with a size ~2'' and has a clear north-south velocity gradient, possibly indicating ordered rotation. The gas mass in GN20 is comparable to the stellar mass (1.3 × 10^(11) × (α/0.8) M_⊙ and 2.3 × 10^(11) M_⊙, respectively), and the sum of gas plus stellar mass is comparable to the dynamical mass of the system (~3.4 × 10^(11)[sin (i)/sin (45°)]^(–2) M_⊙), within a 5 kpc radius. There is also evidence for a tidal tail extending another 2'' north of the galaxy with a narrow velocity dispersion. GN20 may be a massive, gas-rich disk that is gravitationally disturbed, but not completely disrupted. There is one Lyman-break galaxy (BD29079) in the GN20 proto-cluster with an optical spectroscopic redshift within our search volume, and we set a 3σ limit to the molecular gas mass of this galaxy of 1.1 × 10^(10) × (α/0.8) M_⊙
Resonance solutions of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in an open double-well potential
The resonance states and the decay dynamics of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger
(or Gross-Pitaevskii) equation are studied for a simple, however flexible model
system, the double delta-shell potential. This model allows analytical
solutions and provides insight into the influence of the nonlinearity on the
decay dynamics. The bifurcation scenario of the resonance states is discussed,
as well as their dynamical stability properties. A discrete approximation using
a biorthogonal basis is suggested which allows an accurate description even for
only two basis states in terms of a nonlinear, nonhermitian matrix problem.Comment: 21 pages, 14 figure
On Orientifold Constructions of Type IIA Dual Pairs
In this paper we analyze the earlier constructions of the type IIA dual pairs
through orientifolding. By an appropriate choice of -matrix basis for
the spinor representations of the -duality group, we give an explicit
relationship between the orientifold models and their dual pairs.Comment: 11pages, Late
The Elliptic curves in gauge theory, string theory, and cohomology
Elliptic curves play a natural and important role in elliptic cohomology. In
earlier work with I. Kriz, thes elliptic curves were interpreted physically in
two ways: as corresponding to the intersection of M2 and M5 in the context of
(the reduction of M-theory to) type IIA and as the elliptic fiber leading to
F-theory for type IIB. In this paper we elaborate on the physical setting for
various generalized cohomology theories, including elliptic cohomology, and we
note that the above two seemingly unrelated descriptions can be unified using
Sen's picture of the orientifold limit of F-theory compactification on K3,
which unifies the Seiberg-Witten curve with the F-theory curve, and through
which we naturally explain the constancy of the modulus that emerges from
elliptic cohomology. This also clarifies the orbifolding performed in the
previous work and justifies the appearance of the w_4 condition in the elliptic
refinement of the mod 2 part of the partition function. We comment on the
cohomology theory needed for the case when the modular parameter varies in the
base of the elliptic fibration.Comment: 23 pages, typos corrected, minor clarification
Visual Participatory Analysis: A qualitative method for engaging participants in interpreting the results of randomized controlled trials of health interventions
This article contributes to the field of mixed methods by introducing a new method for eliciting participant perspectives of the quantitative results of randomized controlled trials. Participants are rarely asked to interpret trial results, obscuring potentially valuable information about why a trial either succeeds or fails. We introduce a unique method called visual participatory analysis and discuss the insights gained in its use as part of a trial to prevent risk and reduce the prevalence of diabetes in Bangladesh. Findings highlight benefits such as elucidating contextualized explanations for null results and identifying causal mechanisms, as well as challenges around communicating randomized controlled trial methodologies to lay audiences. We conclude that visual participatory analysis is a valuable method to use after a trial
