Atomistic origins of high-performance in hybrid halide perovskite solar cells
The performance of organometallic perovskite solar cells has rapidly
surpassed that of both conventional dye-sensitised and organic photovoltaics.
High power conversion efficiency can be realised in both mesoporous and
thin-film device architectures. We address the origin of this success in the
context of the materials chemistry and physics of the bulk perovskite as
described by electronic structure calculations. In addition to the basic
optoelectronic properties essential for an efficient photovoltaic device
(spectrally suitable band gap, high optical absorption, low carrier effective
masses), the materials are structurally and compositionally flexible. As we
show, hybrid perovskites exhibit spontaneous electric polarisation; we also
suggest ways in which this can be tuned through judicious choice of the organic
cation. The presence of ferroelectric domains will result in internal junctions
that may aid separation of photoexcited electron and hole pairs, and reduction
of recombination through segregation of charge carriers. The combination of
high dielectric constant and low effective mass promotes both Wannier-Mott
exciton separation and effective ionisation of donor and acceptor defects. The
photoferroic effect could be exploited in nanostructured films to generate a
higher open circuit voltage and may contribute to the current-voltage
hysteresis observed in perovskite solar cells.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Direct linearly polarized electroluminescence from perovskite nanoplatelet superlattices
Polarized light is critical for a wide range of applications, but is usually generated by filtering unpolarized light, which leads to substantial energy losses and requires additional optics. Here we demonstrate the direct emission of linearly polarized light from light-emitting diodes made of CsPbI3 perovskite nanoplatelet superlattices. The use of solvents with different vapour pressures enables the self-assembly of the nanoplatelets with fine control over their orientation (either face-up or edge-up) and therefore their transition dipole moment. As a result of the highly uniform alignment of the nanoplatelets, as well as their strong quantum and dielectric confinement, large exciton fine-structure splitting is achieved at the film level, leading to pure red light-emitting diodes with linearly polarized electroluminescence exhibiting a high degree of polarization of 74.4% without any photonic structures. This work demonstrates the potential of perovskite nanoplatelets as a promising source of linearly polarized light, opening up the development of next-generation three-dimensional displays and optical communications from a highly versatile, solution-processable system
Importance of Spin-Orbit Coupling in Hybrid Organic/Inorganic Perovskites for Photovoltaic Applications
International audienceThree-dimensional (3D) hybrid perovskites CH3NH3PbX3 (X = Br, I) have recently been suggested as new key materials for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) leading to a new class of hybrid semiconductor photovoltaic cells (HSPC). Thanks to density functional theory calculations, we show that the band gap of these compounds is dominated by a giant spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the conduction-band (CB). At room temperature, direct and isotropic optical transitions are associated to a spin-orbit split-off band related to the triply degenerated CB of the cubic lattice without SOC. Due to the strong SOC, the electronic states involved in the optical absorption are only slightly perturbed by local distortions of the lattice. In addition, band offset calculations confirm that CH3NH3PbX3/TiO2 is a reference material for driving electrons toward the electrode in HSPC. Two-dimensional (2D) hybrids are also suggested to reach further flexibility for light conversion efficiency. Our study affords the basic concepts to reach the level of knowledge already attained for optoelectronic properties of conventional semiconductors
Feasibility and acceptability of expressive writing with postpartum women: a randomised controlled trial
Abstract
Background: Pregnancy, birth and adjusting to a new baby is a potentially stressful time that can negatively affect womenâs mental and physical health. Expressive writing, where people write about a stressful event for at least 15 minutes on three consecutive days, has been associated with improved health in some groups but it is not clear whether it is feasible and acceptable for use with postpartum women. This study therefore examined the feasibility and acceptability of expressive writing for postpartum women as part of a randomised controlled trial (RCT).
Methods: The Health After Birth Trial (HABiT) was an RCT evaluating expressive writing for postpartum women which included measures of feasibility and acceptability. At 6 to 12 weeks after birth 854 women were randomised to expressive writing, a control writing task or normal care, and outcome measures of health were measured at baseline, one month later and six months later. Feasibility was measured by recruitment, attrition, and adherence to the intervention. Quantitative and qualitative measures of acceptability of the materials and the task were completed six months after the intervention.
Results: Recruitment was low (10.7% of those invited to participate) and the recruited sample was from a restricted sociodemographic range. Attrition was high, increased as the study progressed (35.8% at baseline, 57.5% at one month, and 68.1% at six months) and was higher in the writing groups than in the normal care group. Women complied with instructions to write expressively or not, but adherence to the instruction to write for 15 minutes per day for three days was low (Expressive writing: 29.3%; Control writing: 23.5%). Acceptability measures showed that women who wrote expressively rated the materials/task both more positively and more negatively than those in the control writing group, and qualitative comments revealed that women enjoyed the writing and/or found it helpful even when it was upsetting.
Conclusions: The feasibility of offering expressive writing as a universal self-help intervention to all postpartum women 6 to 12 weeks after birth in the HABiT trial was low, but the expressive writing intervention was acceptable to the majority of women who completed it
Prevalence and onset of comorbidities in the CDKL5 disorder differ from Rett syndrome
Background: Initially described as an early onset seizure variant of Rett syndrome, the CDKL5 disorder is now considered as an independent entity. However, little is currently known about the full spectrum of comorbidities that affect these patients and available literature is limited to small case series. This study aimed to use a large international sample to examine the prevalence in this disorder of comorbidities of epilepsy, gastrointestinal problems including feeding difficulties, sleep and respiratory problems and scoliosis and their relationships with age and genotype. Prevalence and onset were also compared with those occurring in Rett syndrome. Methods: Data for the CDKL5 disorder and Rett syndrome were sourced from the International CDKL5 Disorder Database (ICDD), InterRett and the Australian Rett syndrome Database (ARSD). Logistic regression (multivariate and univariate) was used to analyse the relationships between age group, mutation type and the prevalence of various comorbidities. Binary longitudinal data from the ARSD and the equivalent cross-sectional data from ICDD were examined using generalized linear models with generalized estimating equations. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the failure function for the two disorders and the log-rank test was used to compare the two functions. Results: The likelihood of experiencing epilepsy, GI problems, respiratory problems, and scoliosis in the CDKL5 disorder increased with age and males were more vulnerable to respiratory and sleep problems than females. We did not identify any statistically significant relationships between mutation group and prevalence of comorbidities. Epilepsy, GI problems and sleep abnormalities were more common in the CDKL5 disorder than in Rett syndrome whilst scoliosis and respiratory problems were less prevalent. Conclusion: This study captured a much clearer picture of the CDKL5 disorder than previously possible using the largest sample available to date. There were differences in the presentation of clinical features occurring in the CDKL5 disorder and in Rett syndrome, reinforcing the concept that CDKL5 is an independent disorder with its own distinctive characteristics

The investigation and provenance of glass vessel fragments attributed to the tomb of Amenhotep II, KV35, Valley of the Kings
Four polychrome glass fragments, excavated from tomb KV35 in the Valley of the Kings,
attributed to Amenhotep II, were analysed to further investigate the composition and
provenance of early Late Bronze Age glasses. An additional fragment, EA64163, cited by the British Museum as being stylistically analogous to the fragments from KV35, although with a findspot simply recorded as "Thebes", was also analysed. LA-ICP-MS analysis was used to
analyse multiple colours on the fragments to determine the major element composition, the
colouring strategies and establish provenance using trace element analysis. The resulting data
obtained was compared with four polychrome fragments of standard LBA Egyptian
composition, excavated from the palace of Amenhotep III at Malkata, previously analysed by
SEM-WDS. Analysis showed that the glasses excavated from KV35 are standard LBA glass
of Egyptian composition and were most likely produced in Egypt in the 18th Dynasty. The
fragment EA64163 is a low magnesia, low potash glass, comparable with Iron Age
composition, therefore should be reconsidered as a later glass. The analysis of glasses,
excavated from a reliable, early Egyptian context supports the proposition that glass
technology for multiple colours was established in Egypt at least as early as 1400 BCE
