Revivals of quantum wave-packets in graphene
We investigate the propagation of wave-packets on graphene in a perpendicular
magnetic field and the appearance of collapses and revivals in the
time-evolution of an initially localised wave-packet. The wave-packet evolution
in graphene differs drastically from the one in an electron gas and shows a
rich revival structure similar to the dynamics of highly excited Rydberg
states.
We present a novel numerical wave-packet propagation scheme in order to solve
the effective single-particle Dirac-Hamiltonian of graphene and show how the
collapse and revival dynamics is affected by the presence of disorder. Our
effective numerical method is of general interest for the solution of the Dirac

The cognitive demands of second order manual control: Applications of the event related brain potential
Three experiments are described in which tracking difficulty is varied in the presence of a covert tone discrimination task. Event related brain potentials (ERPs) elicited by the tones are employed as an index of the resource demands of tracking. The ERP measure reflected the control order variation, and this variable was thereby assumed to compete for perceptual/central processing resources. A fine-grained analysis of the results suggested that the primary demands of second order tracking involve the central processing operations of maintaining a more complex internal model of the dynamic system, rather than the perceptual demands of higher derivative perception. Experiment 3 varied tracking bandwidth in random input tracking, and the ERP was unaffected. Bandwidth was then inferred to compete for response-related processing resources that are independent of the ERP

Influx of calcium through voltage-dependent channels regulates processes throughout the nervous system. Specifically, influx through L-type channels plays a variety of roles in early neuronal development and is commonly modulated by G-protein-coupled receptors such as GABAB receptors. Of the four isoforms of L-type channels, only Cav1.2 and Cav1.3 are predominately expressed in the nervous system. Both isoforms are inhibited by the same pharmacological agents, so it has been difficult to determine the role of specific isoforms in physiological processes. In the present study, Western blot analysis and confocal microscopy were utilized to study developmental expression levels and patterns of Cav1.2 and Cav1.3 in the CA1 region of rat hippocampus. Steady-state expression of Cav1.2 predominated during the early neonatal period decreasing by day 12. Steady-state expression of Cav1.3 was low at birth and gradually rose to adult levels by postnatal day 15. In immunohistochemical studies, antibodies against Cav1.2 and Cav1.3 demonstrated the highest intensity of labeling in the proximal dendrites at all ages studied (P1–72). Immunohistochemical studies on one-week-old hippocampi demonstrated significantly more colocalization of GABAB receptors with Cav1.2 than with Cav1.3, suggesting that modulation of L-type calcium current in early development is mediated through Cav1.2 channels
Characterization of Active Main Belt Object P/2012 F5 (Gibbs): A Possible Impacted Asteroid
In this work we characterize the recently discovered active main belt object
P/2012 F5 (Gibbs), which was discovered with a dust trail > 7' in length in the
outer main belt, 7 months prior to aphelion. We use optical imaging obtained on
UT 2012 March 27 to analyze the central condensation and the long trail. We
find nuclear B-band and R-band apparent magnitudes of 20.96 and 19.93 mag,
respectively, which give an upper limit on the radius of the nucleus of 2.1 km.
The geometric cross-section of material in the trail was ~ 4 x 10^8 m^2,
corresponding to a dust mass of ~ 5 x 10^7 kg. Analysis of infrared images
taken by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer in September 2010 reveals that
the object was below the detection limit, suggesting that it was less active
than it was during 2012, or possibly inactive, just 6 months after it passed
through perihelion. We set a 1-sigma upper limit on its radius during this time
of 2.9 km. P/2012 F5 (Gibbs) is dynamically stable in the outer main belt on
timescales of ~ 1 Gyr, pointing towards an asteroidal origin. We find that the
morphology of the ejected dust is consistent with it being produced by a single
event that occurred on UT 2011 July 7 20 days, possibly as the result of

Surface structure of i-Al(68)Pd(23)Mn(9): An analysis based on the T*(2F) tiling decorated by Bergman polytopes
A Fibonacci-like terrace structure along a 5fold axis of i-Al(68)Pd(23)Mn(9)
monograins has been observed by T.M. Schaub et al. with scanning tunnelling
microscopy (STM). In the planes of the terraces they see patterns of dark
pentagonal holes. These holes are well oriented both within and among terraces.
In one of 11 planes Schaub et al. obtain the autocorrelation function of the
hole pattern. We interpret these experimental findings in terms of the
Katz-Gratias-de Boisseu-Elser model. Following the suggestion of Elser that the
Bergman clusters are the dominant motive of this model, we decorate the tiling
T*(2F) by the Bergman polytopes only. The tiling T*(2F) allows us to use the
powerful tools of the projection techniques. The Bergman polytopes can be
easily replaced by the Mackay polytopes as the decoration objects. We derive a
picture of ``geared'' layers of Bergman polytopes from the projection
techniques as well as from a huge patch. Under the assumption that no surface
reconstruction takes place, this picture explains the Fibonacci-sequence of the
step heights as well as the related structure in the terraces qualitatively and
to certain extent even quantitatively. Furthermore, this layer-picture requires
that the polytopes are cut in order to allow for the observed step heights. We
conclude that Bergman or Mackay clusters have to be considered as geometric
building blocks of the i-AlPdMn structure rather than as energetically stable
entities
Jamming under tension in polymer crazes
Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study a unique expanded jammed
state. Tension transforms many glassy polymers from a dense glass to a network
of fibrils and voids called a craze. Entanglements between polymers and
interchain friction jam the system after a fixed increase in volume. As in
dense jammed systems, the distribution of forces is exponential, but they are
tensile rather than compressive. The broad distribution of forces has important
implications for fibril breakdown and the ultimate strength of crazes.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Limitations on the smooth confinement of an unstretchable manifold
We prove that an m-dimensional unit ball D^m in the Euclidean space {\mathbb
R}^m cannot be isometrically embedded into a higher-dimensional Euclidean ball
B_r^d \subset {\mathbb R}^d of radius r < 1/2 unless one of two conditions is
met -- (1)The embedding manifold has dimension d >= 2m. (2) The embedding is
not smooth. The proof uses differential geometry to show that if d<2m and the
embedding is smooth and isometric, we can construct a line from the center of
D^m to the boundary that is geodesic in both D^m and in the embedding manifold
{\mathbb R}^d. Since such a line has length 1, the diameter of the embedding

Stress condensation in crushed elastic manifolds
We discuss an M-dimensional phantom elastic manifold of linear size L crushed
into a small sphere of radius R << L in N-dimensional space. We investigate the
low elastic energy states of 2-sheets (M=2) and 3-sheets (M=3) using analytic
methods and lattice simulations. When N \geq 2M the curvature energy is
uniformly distributed in the sheet and the strain energy is negligible. But
when N=M+1 and M>1, both energies appear to be condensed into a network of
narrow M-1 dimensional ridges. The ridges appear straight over distances

Apollo-11 lunar sample information catalogue
The Apollo 11 mission is reviewed with emphasis on the collection of lunar samples, their geologic setting, early processing, and preliminary examination. The experience gained during five subsequent missions was applied to obtain physical-chemical data for each sample using photographic and binocular microscope techniques. Topics discussed include: binocular examination procedure; breccia clast dexrriptuons, thin section examinations procedure typical breccia in thin section, typical basalt in thin section, sample histories, and chemical and age data. Lingering grains of truth around comet 17P/Holmes
Comet 17P/Holmes underwent a massive outburst in 2007 Oct., brightening by a
factor of almost a million in under 48 hours. We used infrared images taken by
the Wide-Field Survey Explorer mission to characterize the comet as it appeared
at a heliocentric distance of 5.1 AU almost 3 years after the outburst. The
comet appeared to be active with a coma and dust trail along the orbital plane.
We constrained the diameter, albedo, and beaming parameter of the nucleus to
4.135 0.610 km, 0.03 0.01 and 1.03 0.21, respectively. The
properties of the nucleus are consistent with those of other Jupiter Family
comets. The best-fit temperature of the coma was 134 11 K, slightly
higher than the blackbody temperature at that heliocentric distance. Using
Finson-Probstein modeling we found that the morphology of the trail was
consistent with ejection during the 2007 outburst and was made up of dust
grains between 250 m and a few cm in radius. The trail mass was 1.2
