Mapping--The Missing Link in Reducing Risk under SARA III
Dr. Dymon explains how maps can, e.g., hasten effective community responses to natural and artificial hazards and laments widespread failure to prepare and use hazard maps more extensively
Handedness and the Oldowan tool industry: Is preferential right-handedness a relic from our evolutionary past?
Although there is literature on psychological, anthropological, and biological reasons for global preferential right-handedness, there has yet to be literature studying the connection among these three disciplines. The goal of this pilot study is to shed light on the correlation of handedness and Oldowan tool manufacturing in order to provide direction for future study. By taking a cross-disciplinary perspective on evolutionary advantages, genetics, and brain lateralization, it is believed researchers may be able to understand why 90% of the human population is preferentially right-handed. This study concludes that there is a correlation between handedness and toolmaking efficiency, and that further exploration is needed into the relationship of handedness and Oldowan tool production
Reducing Effects of Sensory Disorders with Innovative Technologies
Sensory Processing Disorders affect 5-16% of school aged children. In addition, 40% of children with ADHD also share the Sensory Processing Disorder. Furthermore, sensory deficits are prominent in the learning environment and hinders many students from reaching their full potential.
SENSE-ational began as an Honors 2000 team at East Carolina University with the goal of helping reduce distractions in the classroom for students with sensory processing issues. Our original idea was to design, create, and manufacture kits that were to be distributed into those very classrooms. Due to COVID-19, and the lack of children in the classroom, we were unable to implement these kits. We needed to pivot in our attempt to help children who were struggling with online learning. We produced “DIY YouTube videos of how to make sensory items. We now have a handful of quality, engaging, and useful videos on our YouTube channel, as well as our very own logo and a plan to move forward with our brand. We are utilizing the 3D printers in the Innovation and Design Lab at ECU to create and test our prototypes. In the future, we plan to donate all of our new designs to community schools here in Pitt County, so that our work throughout this project can have an impact on the children of Greenville, North Carolina. This will hopefully improve access to sensory items, and increase focus and learning for the kids of this community. In addition, we hope it will serve as a way for teachers and parents to view the benefits of sensory items in everyday school environments
Karnawalizacja świata w chełmskich opowieściach Menachema Kipnisa
This article is devoted to Menachem Kipnis: a Polish cantor, journalist, satirist, columnist, songwriter,
photographer, and person fascinated by folk tales and Jewish folk tradition. Depicted in Kipnis’ stories, eponymous
Chełm happens to be a place existing first and foremost in imagination, which is abundant in grotesque
and absurd representations of everyday life of its citizens. As it is argued in the article, this is the realm founded
on folk superstitions, whose inhabitants seek wisdom: the value they deem to be of greatest importance
Fotografia (przed)holocaustowa : archiwa pamięci w "Fałszerzach pieprzu" Moniki Sznajderman
The article presents the mechanism of uncovering the past in Monika Sznajderman’s novel The Counterfeiter’s Pepper. A Family Story. A series of pho-tographs sent by the relatives from America becomes for the author the starting point for her journey into the past marred by the memory of the Holocaust. The rediscovered photographs become, in the process of reconstructing the family history, literary landscapes of a world that no longer exists, while the author testifies to the physical closeness of the dead that she feels. The author constructs the past out of the broken photographs, contrasting them with other sources and searching for a point of contact with the family members lost in the Holocaust. Following Sznajderman’s process, the author of the article discusses and analyzes the issue of literary creation of characters (the memory of a person) on the basis of photographs and remarks upon the difficulties in reconciling with the familial past, resulting from complicated identity issues
A Testimony or a Creation? About the Book Mama zawsze wraca [Mama Always Returns] by Agata Tuszyńska and Iwona Chmielewska
The aim of the article is to consider whether Agata Tuszyńska and Iwona Chmielewska’s
publication is a literary redefinition of the act of testimony. The author analyzes the
relationship between text and image, at the same time referring to the life-writing trend. Moreover,
the author raises questions about the relationship between the borrowed past and collective
memory. In the article, the author also draws attention to the creation of a child’s perspective,
which is mainly generated through the mother tongue. The parent is the only person who creates
the imaginary synthesis of the individual elements of Polish culture in miniature. Therefore,
the author analyzes the stylization aspect of Tuszyńska’s story on the child’s perception,
which often turns out to be simultaneously inscribing the extreme situation into the space of
a fairy tale
Analysis and improvement of traffic organization in some areas of the city transport network
The purpose of the qualification work is to study the traffic conditions in the residential area.
In the course of the work the main parameters of traffic and pedestrian flows are investigated, the accident rate for 2016-2019 is considered, the existing schemes of traffic organization are investigated and evaluated.
As a result of the design, proposals were developed for the organization of traffic in the studied areas.
The third section is devoted to issues of life safety and labor protection
The use of mechanical thrombectomy in the treatment of basilar artery occlusion – case report
Occlusion of the basilar artery (BAO) is a rare cause of stroke, making up approximately 1% of all cases. Ischemic stroke within the basilar artery is associated with serious complications and high mortality (75–91%). BAO may occur initially in the form of mild prodromal symptoms with neurological disorders, the consequences of which can lead to death. For these reasons, BAO requires rapid diagnosis and treatment. We report the case of a 26-year-old man who suffered basilar artery occlusion and was treated with endovascular therapy. The patient was disqualified from intra-venous thrombolysis and endovascular treatment due to exceeding the therapeutic time window. Despite this, due to the location of ischemia and age of the patient, it was decided to proceed with a mechanical thrombectomy (TM). Vessel patency was restored using the Solitaire FR stent. Treatment continued with antiplatelet therapy. Despite a significant overshoot of the time window the procedure was successful and complete recanalization was achieved. During hospitalization, significant neurological symptom reductions were observed. There is no accurate data on which method of treatment of ischemic stroke is best for BAO. Expectations about the effectiveness of endovascular techniques are high
