The X-ray Spectrum and Light Curve of Supernova 1995N
We report on multi-epoch X-ray observations of the Type IIn (narrow emission
line) supernova SN 1995N with the ROSAT and ASCA satellites. The January 1998
ASCA X-ray spectrum is well fitted by a thermal bremsstrahlung (kT~10 keV,
N_H~6e20 cm^-2) or power-law (alpha~1.7, N_H~1e21 cm^-2) model. The X-ray light
curve shows evidence for significant flux evolution between August 1996 and
January 1998: the count rate from the source decreased by 30% between our
August 1996 and August 1997 ROSAT observations, and the X-ray luminosity most
likely increased by a factor of ~2 between our August 1997 ROSAT and January
1998 ASCA observations, although evolution of the spectral shape over this
interval is not ruled out. The high X-ray luminosity, L_X~1e41 erg/sec, places
SN 1995N in a small group of Type IIn supernovae with strong circumstellar
interaction, and the evolving X-ray luminosity suggests that the circumstellar

Standardizing type Ia supernovae optical brightness using near-infrared rebrightening time
Accurate standardization of Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) is instrumental to the usage of SNIa as distance indicators. We analyse a homogeneous sample of 22 low-z SNIa, observed by the Carnegie Supernova Project in the optical and near-infrared (NIR). We study the time of the second peak in the J band, t2, as an alternative standardization parameter of SNIa peak optical brightness, as measured by the standard SALT2 parameter mB. We use BAHAMAS, a Bayesian hierarchical model for SNIa cosmology, to estimate the residual scatter in the Hubble diagram. We find that in the absence of a colour correction, t2 is a better standardization parameter compared to stretch: t2 has a 1\u3c3 posterior interval for the Hubble residual scatter of \u3c3\u394\u3bc = (0.250, 0.257) mag, compared to \u3c3\u394\u3bc = (0.280, 0.287) mag when stretch (x1) alone is used. We demonstrate that when employed together with a colour correction, t2 and stretch lead to similar residual scatter. Using colour, stretch and t2 jointly as standardization parameters does not result in any further reduction in scatter, suggesting that t2 carries redundant information with respect to stretch and colour. With a much larger SNIa NIR sample at higher redshift in the future, t2 could be a useful quantity to perform robustness checks of the standardization procedure
Djinn Lite: a tool for customised gene transcript modelling, annotation-data enrichment and exploration
BACKGROUND: There is an ever increasing rate of data made available on genetic variation, transcriptomes and proteomes. Similarly, a growing variety of bioinformatic programs are becoming available from many diverse sources, designed to identify a myriad of sequence patterns considered to have potential biological importance within inter-genic regions, genes, transcripts, and proteins. However, biologists require easy to use, uncomplicated tools to integrate this information, visualise and print gene annotations. Integrating this information usually requires considerable informatics skills, and comprehensive knowledge of the data format to make full use of this information. Tools are needed to explore gene model variants by allowing users the ability to create alternative transcript models using novel combinations of exons not necessarily represented in current database deposits of mRNA/cDNA sequences. RESULTS: Djinn Lite is designed to be an intuitive program for storing and visually exploring of custom annotations relating to a eukaryotic gene sequence and its modelled gene products. In particular, it is helpful in developing hypothesis regarding alternate splicing of transcripts by allowing the construction of model transcripts and inspection of their resulting translations. It facilitates the ability to view a gene and its gene products in one synchronised graphical view, allowing one to drill down into sequence related data. Colour highlighting of selected sequences and added annotations further supports exploration, visualisation of sequence regions and motifs known or predicted to be biologically significant. CONCLUSION: Gene annotating remains an ongoing and challengingtask that will continue as gene structures, gene transcription repertoires, disease loci, protein products and their interactions become moreprecisely defined. Djinn Lite offers an accessible interface to help accumulate, enrich, and individualise sequence annotations relating to a gene, its transcripts and translations. The mechanism of transcript definition and creation, and subsequent navigation and exploration of features, are very intuitive and demand only a short learning curve. Ultimately, Djinn Lite can form the basis for providing valuable clues to plan new experiments, providing storage of sequences and annotations for dedication to customised projects. The application is appropriate for Windows 98-ME-2000-XP-2003 operating systems
Multi-Wavelength Properties of the Type IIb SN 2008ax
We present the UV, optical, X-ray, and radio properties of the Type IIb SN
2008ax discovered in NGC 4490. The observations in the UV are one of the
earliest of a Type IIb supernova (SN). On approximately day four after the
explosion, a dramatic upturn in the u and uvw1 (lambda_c = 2600 Angstroms)
light curves occurred after an initial rapid decline which is attributed to
adiabatic cooling after the initial shock breakout. This rapid decline and
upturn is reminiscent of the Type IIb SN 1993J on day six after the explosion.
Optical/near-IR spectra taken around the peak reveal prominent H-alpha, HeI,
and CaII absorption lines. A fading X-ray source is also located at the
position of SN 2008ax, implying an interaction of the SN shock with the
surrounding circumstellar material and a mass-loss rate of the progenitor of
M_dot = (9+/-3)x10^-6 solar masses per year. The unusual time evolution (14
days) of the 6 cm peak radio luminosity provides further evidence that the
mass-loss rate is low. Combining the UV, optical, X-ray, and radio data with
models of helium exploding stars implies the progenitor of SN 2008ax was an
unmixed star in an interacting-binary. Modeling of the SN light curve suggests
a kinetic energy (E_k) of 0.5x10^51 ergs, an ejecta mass (M_ej) of 2.9 solar
masses, and a nickel mass (M_Ni) of 0.06 solar masses.Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters, 14 pages, 3 figures, 2 table
More Benefits of Semileptonic Rare B Decays at Low Recoil: CP Violation
We present a systematic analysis of the angular distribution of Bbar ->
Kbar^\ast (-> Kbar pi) l^+ l^- decays with l = e, mu in the low recoil region
(i.e. at high dilepton invariant masses of the order of the mass of the
b-quark) to account model-independently for CP violation beyond the Standard
Model, working to next-to-leading order QCD. From the employed heavy quark
effective theory framework we identify the key CP observables with reduced
hadronic uncertainties. Since some of the CP asymmetries are CP-odd they can be
measured without B-flavour tagging. This is particularly beneficial for
Bbar_s,B_s -> phi(-> K^+ K^-) l^+ l^- decays, which are not self-tagging, and
we work out the corresponding time-integrated CP asymmetries. Presently
available experimental constraints allow the proposed CP asymmetries to be
sizeable, up to values of the order ~ 0.2, while the corresponding Standard
Model values receive a strong parametric suppression at the level of O(10^-4).
Furthermore, we work out the allowed ranges of the short-distance (Wilson)
coefficients C_9,C_10 in the presence of CP violation beyond the Standard Model
but no further Dirac structures. We find the Bbar_s -> mu^+ mu^- branching
ratio to be below 9*10^-9 (at 95% CL). Possibilities to check the performance
of the theoretical low recoil framework are pointed out.Comment: 18 pages, 3 fig.; 1 reference and comment on higher order effects

Identification of the Red Supergiant Progenitor of Supernova 2005cs: Do the Progenitors of Type II-P Supernovae Have Low Mass?
The stars that end their lives as supernovae (SNe) have been directly
observed in only a handful of cases, due mainly to the extreme difficulty in
identifying them in images obtained prior to the SN explosions. Here we report
the identification of the progenitor for the recent Type II-plateau
(core-collapse) SN 2005cs in pre-explosion archival images of the Whirlpool
Galaxy (M51) obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for
Surveys (ACS). From high-quality ground-based images of the SN from the
Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, we precisely determine the position of the SN
and are able to isolate the SN progenitor to within 0".04 in the HST/ACS
optical images. We further pinpoint the SN location to within 0".005 from
HST/ACS ultraviolet images of the SN, confirming our progenitor identification.
From photometry of the SN progenitor obtained with the pre-SN ACS images, and
also limits to its brightness in pre-SN HST/NICMOS images, we infer that the
progenitor is a red supergiant star of spectral type K0--M3, with initial mass
7--9 Msun. We also discuss the implications of the SN 2005cs progenitor
identification and its mass estimate. There is an emerging trend that the most
common Type II-plateau SNe originate from low-mass supergiants 8--15 Msun.Comment: Submitted to ApJ. A high resolution version can be found at

23 GHz VLBI Observations of SN 2008ax
We report on phase-referenced 23 GHz Very-Long-Baseline-Interferometry (VLBI)
observations of the type IIb supernova SN 2008ax, made with the Very Long
Baseline Array (VLBA) on 2 April 2008 (33 days after explosion). These
observations resulted in a marginal detection of the supernova. The total flux
density recovered from our VLBI image is 0.80.3 mJy (one standard
deviation). As it appears, the structure may be interpreted as either a
core-jet or a double source. However, the supernova structure could be somewhat
confused with a possible close by noise peak. In such a case, the recovered
flux density would decrease to 0.480.12 mJy, compatible with the flux
densities measured with the VLA at epochs close in time to our VLBI
observations. The lowest average expansion velocities derived from our
observations are km s (case of a double
source) and km s (taking the weaker source
component as a spurious, close by, noise peak, which is the more likely
interpretation). These velocities are 7.3 and 2 times higher, respectively,

Early-type galaxies with core collapse supernovae
It is widely accepted that the progenitors of core collapse SNe are young
massive stars and therefore their host galaxies are mostly spiral or irregular
galaxies dominated by a young stellar population. Surprisingly, among
morphologically classified hosts of core collapse SNe, we find 22 cases where
the host has been classified as an Elliptical or S0 galaxy. To clarify this
apparent contradiction, we carry out a detailed morphological study and an
extensive literature search for additional information on the sample objects.
Our results are as follows: 1. Of 22 "early type" objects, 17 are in fact
misclassified spiral galaxies, one is a misclassified irregular, and one is a
misclassified ring galaxy. 2. Of the 3 objects maintaining the early type
classification, one (NGC2768) is a suspected merger remnant, another (NGC4589)
is definitely a merger, and the third (NGC2274) is in close interaction. The
presence of some amount of young stellar population in these galaxies is
therefore not unexpected. These results confirm the presence of a limited, but
significant, number of core collapse SNe in galaxies generally classified of
early type. In all cases, anyway, there are independent indicators of the
presence in host galaxies of recent star formation due to merging or

Optical and Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of SN 1995N: Evidence for Strong Circumstellar Interaction
Optical and ultraviolet observations of the Type IIn supernova 1995N at epochs between 321 and 1799 days after the explosion show three distinct velocity components. The narrow lines come from circumstellar gas and show both low and high ionization. This component has a low filling factor, and is photoionized by X-rays from the shock. The intermediate component, which is dominated by newly processed oxygen, originates in a shell with velocity of 2500-5000 km/s, and most likely comes from the ejecta. The hydrogen- and helium-dominated gas has a low ionization, a high density, and velocities that extend out to ~10,000 km/s. Strong signatures of Ly-alpha-pumped fluorescence lines of Fe II are seen in the near-infrared and ultraviolet. The He/H ratio, ~ 0.3 by number, and the nitrogen overabundance provide strong evidence for CNO burning products. The fluxes of the broad hydrogen and helium lines decrease considerably faster than the oxygen lines. The H-alpha line profile shows strong evolution, with the red wing decreasing faster than the blue. Possible scenarios, involving either a clumpy circumstellar medium, or an aspherical distribution of the surrounding gas, are discussed based on the line profiles and physical conditions. Finally, we propose that Type IIn supernovae have their origin in red supergiants in a superwind phase
