Anatomy of String Breaking in QCD
We investigate the string breaking mechanism in n_f=2 QCD. We discuss the
lattice techniques used and present results on energy levels and mixing angle
of the static BBbar|QbarQ two-state system. The string breaking is visualized,
by means of an animation of the action density distribution as a function of
the static colour source-antisource separation.Comment: Talk presented at Lattice 2005 (Topology and Confinement), Dublin,

Alpha decay and proton-neutron correlations
We study the influence of proton-neutron (p-n) correlations on alpha-decay
width. It is shown from the analysis of alpha Q values that the p-n
correlations increase the penetration of the alpha particle through the Coulomb
barrier in the treatment following Gamow's formalism, and enlarges the total
alpha-decay width significantly.
In particular, the isoscalar p-n interactions play an essential role in
enlarging the alpha-decay width.
The so-called "alpha-condensate" in Z > 84 isotopes are related to the strong
p-n correlations.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. C (R.C.
Gamow Shell Model Description of Weakly Bound Nuclei and Unbound Nuclear States
We present the study of weakly bound, neutron-rich nuclei using the nuclear
shell model employing the complex Berggren ensemble representing the bound
single-particle states, unbound Gamow states, and the non-resonant continuum.
In the proposed Gamow Shell Model, the Hamiltonian consists of a one-body
finite depth (Woods-Saxon) potential and a residual two-body interaction. We
discuss the basic ingredients of the Gamow Shell Model. The formalism is
illustrated by calculations involving {\it several} valence neutrons outside
the double-magic core: He and O.Comment: 19 pages, 20 encapsulated PostScript figure
Systematic design of an extractive distillation for maximum-boiling azeotropes with heavy entrainers
Extractive distillation is one of the most attractive approaches for separating azeotropic mixtures. Few contributions have been reported to design an extractive distillation for separating maximum-boiling azeotropes and no systematic approaches for entrainer screening have been presented. A systematic approach to design of two-column extractive distillation for separating azeotropes with heavy entrainers has been proposed. A thermodynamic feasibility analysis for azeotropes with potential heavy entrainers was first conducted. Then, five important properties are selected for entrainer evaluation. Fuzzy logic and develop membership functions to calculate attribute values of selected properties have been used. An overall indicator for entrainer evaluation is proposed and a ranking list is generated. Finally, the top five entrainers from the ranking list have been selected and use process optimization techniques to further evaluate selected entrainers and generate an optimal design. The capability of the proposed method is illustrated using the separation of acetoneâchloroform azeotropes with five potential entrainers
