Changes in erythropoietin levels during space flight or space flight simulation
Two hundred and seventy samples from 24 subjects involved in 3 bedrest studies and from 3 subjects involved in Spacelab Mission Development Test 3 were assayed for erythropoietin (Ep), in an in vitro fetal mouse liver cell assay, and for ferritin using a commercially available immunoradiometric assay kit. No trends or significant changes in serum Ep were observed. Serum ferritin concentrations tended to increases slightly during the 'missions', reflecting a redirection of iron from the suppressed erythron into iron stores
MARKETING CHARACTERISTICS ASSOCIATED WITH SEAFOOD COUNTERS IN GROCERY STORES
This study provides a benchmark analysis of seafood counter characteristics corresponding to the peaking of per capita seafood demand in the U.S. Logistic regression results show separate seafood counters are less likely in small stores, in rural stores, and in stores in low or medium income areas. Chain stores and stores with a significant number of non-white customers were more likely to have a seafood counter. Stores in the East South Central region were less likely, and stores in New England more likely, to have a seafood counter. The likelihood that stores will develop seafood counters was related to differences in sales volume, floor space, urban/rural location, income level of clients and regional location. Continuing innovations in marketing technology of seafood counters are likely to provide expanded marketing opportunities in the future.Marketing,
Dynamic techniques for studies of secular variations in position from ranging to satellites
Satellite laser range measurements were applied to the study of latitude variation arising from polar motion, and the solid-earth and ocean tidal distortion of the earth's gravity field. Experiments involving two laser tracking stations were conducted. The relative location of one station with respect to the other was determined by performing simultaneous range measurements to a satellite from two stations several hundred kilometers apart. The application of this technique to the San Andreas Fault Experiment in California is discussed. Future capabilities of spacecraft equipped with laser retroreflectors include: (1) determination of the product of the earth's mass and gravitational constant; (2) measurement of crustal and tectonic motions; (3) determination of the elastic response of the solid-earth tidal forces; (4) measurement of the amplitudes and phase of certain components of the ocean tides; and (5) self-monitoring of the latitude and height variations of the tracking station

Synthesis and Properties of Dipyridylcyclopentenes
A short and general route to the substituted dipyridylcyclopentenes was explored and several new compounds belonging to this new group of diarylethenes were synthesized. The study of their photochromic and thermochromic properties shows that the rate of the thermal ring opening is strongly dependent on the polarity of the solvent.

Searching for pitch invariant representations in auditory cortex [oral presentation]
Pitch constancy relates to perceiving the same pitch from tones with differing spectral shapes and is one key criteria for identifying a pitch selective neural representation in auditory cortex. Here we used an event-related potential (ERP) adaptation study and a behavioural task (target same/different) to investigate whether pitch coding is invariant to changes in timbre. Adaptation is observed as a decrease in N100-P200 when the same stimulus is repeated because overlapping neuronal populations encode the stimulus. Reduced adaptation indicates that new neuronal populations are recruited to encode a change in an acoustic feature of interest (i.e. pitch, timbre or both). If neurons are selective to pitch (invariant to timbre), reduced adaptation should occur for pitch changes only. If selective to both (non-invariant to timbre), reduced adaptation should occur for pitch and timbre changes. Similarly, stimulus discrimination during the behavioural task should not require any additional processing resources if neurons are selective to pitch only, and hence reaction times and accuracy should be equivalent across conditions. If neurons are selective to both pitch and timbre, longer reaction times and poorer accuracy should be observed for timbre changes. We found reduced adaptation in the N100-P200 and increased reaction times and poorer accuracy for timbre changes. This suggests that neurons in auditory cortex are selective to both pitch and timbre, i.e. pitch coding is non-invariant to timbre. Characterisation of bulk water samples from copper pipes undergoing microbially influenced corrosion by diagnostic metabolomic profiling
This paper presents the application of metabolomic techniques to determine the presence of microbial influenced corrosion (MIC). In a previous study, the extracellular metabolites expressed from pipe biofilm was identified by analysing the passing water. This investigation extends this work by successfully applying a chemometric statistical analysis to the extracellular metabolomic profile of a number of water samples to identify critical metabolomic biomarkers.
