    Performance of Long Modules of Silicon Microstrip Detectors

    This note describes the performance of modules assembled with up to twelve silicon microstrip detectors. These modules were built for the instrumented Silicon Target (STAR) that has been installed in the NOMAD spectrometer. Laboratory and test beam results are compared with model predictions. For a module of nine detectors, test beam results indicate a signal--to--noise ratio of 19, a hit finding efficiency of 99.8\% and a spatial resolution of 6.0 ÎĽ\mum. Laboratory measurements indicate that modules of twelve detectors exhibit a signal--to--noise ratio of the order of 16

    A multiparticle spectrometer at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings is equipped with proportional chambers as detectors. Design and performance of the vertex detector around the collision region are described. The detector consists of approximately 20000 proportional wires in densely packed chambers. (6 refs)

    Warm liquid calorimetry for LHC

    Results from the beam tests of the U/TMP "warm liquid" calorimeter show that such a technique is very promising for the LHC. Our aim is to extend this programme and design a calorimeter that can satisfy the requirements of high rates, high radiation levels, compensation, uniformity and granularity, as well as fully contain hadronic showers. We propose to construct liquid ionization chambers operated at very high fields, capable of collecting the total charge produced by ionizing particles within times comparable to the bunch crossing time of the future Collider. For this reason we plan to extend the current programme on tetramethylpentane (TMP) to tetramethylsilane (TMSi). An electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of very high field ionization chambers filled with TMSi as sensitive medium with Uranium and/or other high density material as absorber will first be built (to be followed by a full-scale calorimeter module), on which newly designed fast amplifiers and readout electronics will be tested. In addition, a fully assembled supergondola will be installed in ECA 5 in order to test noise and cross-talk in a real environment

    A large area transition radiation detector for the NOMAD experiment

    A transition radiation detector to identify electrons at 90% efficiency with a rejection factor against pions of 10 3 on an area of 2.85 Ă— 2.85 m 2 has been constructed for the NOMAD experiment. Each of its 9 modules includes a 315 plastic foil radiator and a detector plane of 176 vertical straw tubes filled with a xenon-methane gas mixture.
