Three-Year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) Observations: Foreground Polarization
We present a full-sky model of polarized Galactic microwave emission based on
three years of observations by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP)
at frequencies from 23 to 94 GHz. The model compares maps of the Stokes Q and U
components from each of the 5 WMAP frequency bands in order to separate
synchrotron from dust emission, taking into account the spatial and frequency
dependence of the synchrotron and dust components. This simple two-component
model of the interstellar medium accounts for at least 97% of the polarized
emission in the WMAP maps of the microwave sky. Synchrotron emission dominates
the polarized foregrounds at frequencies below 50 GHz, and is comparable to the
dust contribution at 65 GHz. The spectral index of the synchrotron component,
derived solely from polarization data, is -3.2 averaged over the full sky, with
a modestly flatter index on the Galactic plane. The synchrotron emission has
mean polarization fraction 2--4% in the Galactic plane and rising to over 20%
at high latitude, with prominent features such as the North Galactic Spur more
polarized than the diffuse component. Thermal dust emission has polarization
fraction 1% near the Galactic center, rising to 6% at the anti-center. Diffuse
emission from high-latitude dust is also polarized with mean fractional

Towards a guided atom interferometer based on a superconducting atom chip
We evaluate the realization of a novel geometry of a guided atom
interferometer based on a high temperature superconducting microstructure. The
interferometer type structure is obtained with a guiding potential realized by
two current carrying superconducting wires in combination with a closed
superconducting loop sustaining a persistent current. We present the layout and
realization of our superconducting atom chip. By employing simulations we
discuss the critical parameters of the interferometer guide in particular near
the splitting regions of the matter waves. Based on measurements of the
relevant chip properties we discuss the application of a compact and reliable

Trapping of ultra-cold atoms with the magnetic field of vortices in a thin film superconducting micro-structure
We store and control ultra-cold atoms in a new type of trap using magnetic
fields of vortices in a high temperature superconducting micro-structure. This
is the first time ultra-cold atoms have been trapped in the field of magnetic
flux quanta. We generate the attractive trapping potential for the atoms by
combining the magnetic field of a superconductor in the remanent state with
external homogeneous magnetic fields. We show the control of crucial atom trap
characteristics such as an efficient intrinsic loading mechanism, spatial
positioning of the trapped atoms and the vortex density in the superconductor.
The measured trap characteristics are in good agreement with our numerical

The Radio Properties of Composite LINER/HII Galaxies
Arcsec-resolution VLA observations -- newly obtained as well as published --
of 40 nearby galaxies are discussed, completing a study of the radio properties
of a magnitude-limited sample of nearby galaxies of the composite LINER/HII
type. Our results reveal an overall detection rate of at least 25% AGN
candidates among these composite sources. The general properties of these AGN
candidates, as compared to non-AGN composite sources and HII galaxies, are

Successive Bouts of Cycling Stimulates Genes Associated with Mitochondrial Biogenesis
Exercise increases mRNA for genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidative enzyme capacity. However, little is known about how these genes respond to consecutive bouts of prolonged exercise. We examined the effects of 3 h of intensive cycling performed on three consecutive days on the mRNA associated with mitochondrial biogenesis in trained human subjects. Forty trained cyclists were tested for VO2max (54.7 ± 1.1 ml kg−1 min−1). The subjects cycled at 57% wattsmax for 3 h using their own bicycles on CompuTrainer™ Pro Model trainers (RacerMate, Seattle, WA) on three consecutive days. Muscle biopsies were obtained from the vastus lateralis pre- and post-exercise on days one and three. Muscle samples were analyzed for mRNA content of peroxisome proliferator receptor gamma coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1α), sirtuin 1 (Sirt-1), cytochrome c, and citrate synthase. Data were analyzed using a 2 (time) × 2 (day) repeated measures ANOVA. Of the mRNA analyzed, the following increased from pre to post 3 h rides: cytochrome c (P = 0.006), citrate synthase (P = 0.03), PGC-1α (P \u3c 0.001), and Sirt-1 (P = 0.005). The following mRNA showed significant effects from days one to three: cytochrome c (P \u3c 0.001) and citrate synthase (P = 0.01). These data show that exhaustive cycling performed on three consecutive days resulted in both acute and chronic stimuli for mRNA associated with mitochondrial biogenesis in already trained subjects. This is the first study to illustrate an increase in sirtuin-1 mRNA with acute and chronic exercise. These data contribute to the understanding of mRNA expression during both acute and successive bouts of prolonged exercise
Coherent manipulation of atomic qubits in optical micropotentials
We experimentally demonstrate the coherent manipulation of atomic states in
far-detuned dipole traps and registers of dipole traps based on two-dimensional
arrays of microlenses. By applying Rabi, Ramsey, and spin-echo techniques, we
systematically investigate the dephasing mechanisms and determine the coherence
time. Simultaneous Ramsey measurements in up to 16 dipole traps are performed
and proves the scalability of our approach. This represents an important step
in the application of scalable registers of atomic qubits for quantum
information processing. In addition, this system can serve as the basis for
novel atomic clocks making use of the parallel operation of a large number of
individual clocks each remaining separately addressable.Comment: to be published in Appl. Phys.
Wave Packet Echoes in the Motion of Trapped Atoms
We experimentally demonstrate and systematically study the stimulated revival
(echo) of motional wave packet oscillations. For this purpose, we prepare wave
packets in an optical lattice by non-adiabatically shifting the potential and
stimulate their reoccurence by a second shift after a variable time delay. This
technique, analogous to spin echoes, enables one even in the presence of strong
dephasing to determine the coherence time of the wave packets. We find that for
strongly bound atoms it is comparable to the cooling time and much longer than
the inverse of the photon scattering rate
Blood Leukocyte mRNA Expression for IL-10, IL-1Ra, and IL-8, but Not IL-6, Increases After Exercise
The primary purpose of this project was to study exercise-induced leukocyte cytokine mRNA expression. Changes in plasma cytokine levels and blood leukocyte mRNA expression for interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, IL- 10, and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) were measured in 12 athletes following 2 h of intensive cycling (64% Wattsmax) while ingesting a carbohydrate or placebo beverage (randomized and double blinded). Blood samples were collected 30 min preexercise and immediately and 1 h postexercise. Carbohydate compared with placebo ingestion attenuated exercise-induced changes in plasma cortisol (8.8% vs. 62%, respectively), epinephrine (–9.2% vs. 138%), IL-6 (10-fold vs. 40-fold), IL-10 (8.9-fold vs. 26-fold, and IL-1Ra (2.1-fold vs. 5.6-fold). Significant time effects were measured for blood leukocyte IL-8 (2.4-fold increase 1 h postexercise), IL-10 (2.7-fold increase), IL-1Ra (2.2-fold increase), and IL-6 (0.8-fold decrease) mRNA content, with no significant differences between Cho and Pla test conditions. In summary, gene expression for IL-8, IL-10, and IL-1Ra, but not IL-6, is increased in blood leukocytes taken from athletes following 2 h of intensive cycling and is not influenced by carbohydrate compared with placebo ingestion. mRNA expression was high enough to indicate a substantial contribution of blood leukocytes to plasma levels of IL-8, IL-10, and IL-1Ra during prolonged exercise
OGHReS: Star formation in the Outer Galaxy (-)
We have used data from the Outer Galaxy High-Resolution Survey (OGHReS) to
refine the velocities, distances, and physical properties of a large sample of
3584 clumps detected in far infrared/submillimetre emission in the HiGAL survey
located in the region of the Galactic plane. Using
CO and CO spectra, we have determined reliable velocities to 3412
clumps (95% of the sample). In comparison to the velocities from the HiGAL
catalogue, we find good agreement for 80% of the sample (within 5 km/s). Using
the higher resolution and sensitivity of OGHReS has allowed us to correct the
velocity for 632 clumps and provide velocities for 687 clumps for which no
velocity had been previously allocated. The velocities are used with a rotation
curve to refine the distances to the clumps and to calculate the clumps'
properties using a distance-dependent gas-to-dust ratio. We have determined
reliable physical parameters for 3200 outer Galaxy dense clumps (~90% of the
HiGAL sources in the region). We find a trend of decreasing luminosity-to-mass
ratio with increasing Galactocentric distance, suggesting the star formation
efficiency is lower in the outer Galaxy or that it is resulting in more lower
mass stars than in the inner Galaxy. We also find a similar surface density for
protostellar clumps located in the inner and outer Galaxy, revealing that the
surface density requirements for star formation are the same across the

The Nature of Composite LINER/HII Galaxies, As Revealed from High-Resolution VLA Observations
A sample of 37 nearby galaxies displaying composite LINER/HII and pure HII
spectra was observed with the VLA in an investigation of the nature of their
weak radio emission. The resulting radio contour maps overlaid on optical
galaxy images are presented here, together with an extensive literature list
and discussion of the individual galaxies. Radio morphological data permit
assessment of the ``classical AGN'' contribution to the global activity
observed in these ``transition'' LINER galaxies. One in five of the latter
objects display clear AGN characteristics: these occur exclusively in
