Viral Etiology of Ascending Myelitis
To the Editor: I found the article, “Ascending Myelitis in Association with Herpes Simplex Virus,” by Klastersky et al. (issue of July 27, page 182) most interesting and well done. However, the patient's occupational and animal-exposure history was not mentioned, and the question naturally arises whether or not a simian herpesvirus (e.g. B or T) may have been responsible. Although the authors' neutralizing data strongly support HVS Type 1, no mention was made of testing the isolate against specific antiserums for herpes B or T, viruses that share antigenic determinants with herpes simplex.
