The catalytic effect of anions on reduction reactions involving metal ions
A model is proposed for a general activated complex AXB in oxidation-reduction reactions involving two metal ions (A) and (B). The symbol (X) would indicate the anions or other groupings which might be present, and which ordinarily would be complexed to the metals separately. The effectiveness of (X) is related to its ability to be oxidized or reduced in itself. In the case that (X) consists of oxidizable anions, the probability of electron transfer from (X) to the oxidizing metal (A) is correlated with the strength (energy) of the bond between (X) and (A). Two previous explanations of the catalytic effect of anions on such reactions are discussed, and some experiments outlined will test the validity of the proposed model
The Fairness of Fair Trade: An Analysis of the Economics of Fair Trade
In 2015, a study done by Cone Communications found that millennials are universally more engaged in corporate social responsibility. In fact, 87% of millennials are willing to purchase a product with social or environmental benefits. Enter, the fair trade label. The fair trade label, which is attached to products which meet the previously mentioned consumer demands, has emerged over the last three decades. Products like organic produce, textiles, and natural commodities have entered into global retailers and supermarkets through these non-traditional distribution channels, supported by increased consumption as well as changing consumer preferences. In order to uncover the underlying economic and social benefits and potential disadvantages, an analysis of the fair trade model has been conducted. Additionally, this paper will examine the future outlook of fair trade labels and how companies are creating niche business strategies within the model to develop sustained competitive advantages
Correlated Quantum Transport of Density Wave Electrons
Recently observed Aharonov-Bohm quantum interference of period h/2e in charge
density wave rings strongly suggest that correlated density wave electron
transport is a cooperative quantum phenomenon. The picture discussed here
posits that quantum solitons nucleate and transport current above a Coulomb
blockade threshold field. We propose a field-dependent tunneling matrix element
and use the Schrodinger equation, viewed as an emergent classical equation as
in Feynman's treatment of Josephson tunneling, to compute the evolving
macrostate amplitudes, finding excellent quantitative agreement with voltage
oscillations and current-voltage characteristics in NbSe3. A proposed phase
diagram shows the conditions favoring soliton nucleation versus classical

Spin-polarized tunneling through randomly transparent magnetic junctions: Reentrant magnetoresistance approaching the Julliere limit
Electron conductance in planar magnetic tunnel junctions with long-range
barrier disorder is studied within Glauber-eikonal approximation enabling exact
disorder ensemble averaging by means of the Holtsmark-Markov method. This
allows us to address a hitherto unexplored regime of the tunneling
magnetoresistance effect characterized by the crossover from
momentum-conserving to random tunneling as a function of the defect
concentration. We demonstrate that such a crossover results in a reentrant
magnetoresistance: It goes through a pronounced minimum before reaching
disorder- and geometry-independent Julliere's value at high defect

Equidistribution of Heegner Points and Ternary Quadratic Forms
We prove new equidistribution results for Galois orbits of Heegner points
with respect to reduction maps at inert primes. The arguments are based on two
different techniques: primitive representations of integers by quadratic forms
and distribution relations for Heegner points. Our results generalize one of
the equidistribution theorems established by Cornut and Vatsal in the sense
that we allow both the fundamental discriminant and the conductor to grow.
Moreover, for fixed fundamental discriminant and variable conductor, we deduce
an effective surjectivity theorem for the reduction map from Heegner points to
supersingular points at a fixed inert prime. Our results are applicable to the
setting considered by Kolyvagin in the construction of the Heegner points Euler
system
Giant Electroresistance in Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions
The interplay between the electron transport in metal/ferroelectric/metal
junctions with ultrathin ferroelectric barriers and the polarization state of a
barrier is investigated. Using a model which takes into account screening of
polarization charges in metallic electrodes and direct quantum tunneling across
a ferroelectric barrier we calculate the change in the tunneling conductance
associated with the polarization switching. We find the conductance change of a
few orders of magnitude for metallic electrodes with significantly different
screening lengths. This giant electroresistance effect is the consequence of a
different potential profile seen by transport electrons for the two opposite
polarization orientations.Comment: 4 page
Recolonization of mollusc assemblages in mangrove plantations damaged by Typhoon Chan-hom in the Philippines
We investigated the effects of a catastrophic typhoon on mollusc assemblages of damaged mangrove plantations of different ages. Molluscs were sampled from infaunal, epifaunal and arboreal assemblages of mangrove stands in Lingayen Gulf, northwest Philippines, and compared with assemblages of un-impacted areas. Prior to the occurrence of the typhoon, there were clear shifts in the species diversity (H’) and composition of mollusc assemblages with stand age of mangrove forests. This was observed in species composition through the succession in dominance from pioneer to seral or putative climax species, and assemblage type (as arboreal, epifaunal and infaunal). However, severe damage to vegetation structure and sediment properties (associated with a reduction in tree density and canopy cover resulting in increased temperatures and exposure) following the typhoon resulted in an alteration of trajectory patterns in the damaged stands. There were shifts in species composition and dominant species from having mature mangrove-associated species (pre-typhoon) to an abrupt return in dominance of pioneer species (post-typhoon). The damage was more evident in older stands than in intermediate-aged stands. Furthermore, the reduced presence of molluscs (and also probably their activities, i.e. burrowing) may have contributed to the delayed recovery of mangroves. The prospects for recovery of the system to pre-typhoon levels are therefore uncertain where the re-establishment of seral or edaphic mollusc assemblages appears to be related to the recovery of vegetation and sediment conditions
Conformational spread as a mechanism for cooperativity in the bacterial flagellar switch
The bacterial flagellar switch that controls the direction of flagellar rotation during chemotaxis has a highly cooperative response. This has previously been understood in terms of the classic two-state, concerted model of allosteric regulation. Here, we used high-resolution optical microscopy to observe switching of single motors and uncover the stochastic multistate nature of the switch. Our observations are in detailed quantitative agreement with a recent general model of allosteric cooperativity that exhibits conformational spread—the stochastic growth and shrinkage of domains of adjacent subunits sharing a particular conformational state. We expect that conformational spread will be important in explaining cooperativity in other large signaling complexes
