Portlet Feasibility Study:A report prepared for the GroupLog Project funded by JISC under the eTools Programme
GroupLog is a project funded by the JISC under the 03/04 call for projects to develop E-Learning Tools for learners and teachers. This is a report on an assessment of the feasibility of developing GroupLog as a WSRP application, carried out by UKOLN in conjunction with CDNTL. Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) is first reviewed as a standard by covering the background information obtained from desk research. The review contains extensive links to portlet-related resources. Development options are then considered. A test platform that was installed to complement the desk-research by providing hands-on experience is then described, together with a sample application illustrating two different ways in which it could be delivered by WSRP. This report concludes that a solution that involves the use of Java-related technology is the most practical option given the current status of the technology. This approach would require a suitable Java platform to be set up and configured. Significant technical knowledge and programming effort would be required. The time and experience required to implement such a solution does not fit within the immediate plans and timing for GroupLog development. The report ends by drawing some general conclusions that can be used to inform any future decisions regarding the delivery of GroupLog using WSRP
Patients participate! Literature review:Usability and human factors in citizen science projects, and trust and credibility on the Web
This review was written for the Patients Participate! Project. The Patients Participate! Project is a 7-‐month feasibility study to investigate bridging the gap between information access and understanding. Specifically, the project wanted to explore whether lay summaries can assist in the wider understanding of health-‐ related information and whether the crowd-‐sourced lay summary is a feasible mass-‐ production model. This review examines human factors as reported in the literature for projects using citizen and human factors applied to user trust and perception of the credibility of web sites and content, in order to identify factors that could contribute to the feasibility study
How to Cite Datasets and Link to Publications:A Report of the Digital Curation Centre
The UK Digital Curation Centre publishes ‘How-to’ guides that provide research data stakeholders with a working knowledge of curation topics. One of these is ‘How to cite datasets and link to publications’. It provides guidance on including in one's writing both in-text citations and full bibliographic references for datasets, points out some common challenges and suggests strategies for dealing with them
An Ontology Server for AgentCities.NET
Within this six month deployment project[1] we have concentrated on taking forward the ideas and systems developed in a number of initiatives in which UKOLN has been involved, chiefly among these the EU-funded DESIRE[6] and SCHEMAS projects[7], the UK MEG Registry project[15] and the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative[5]. All of these projects explored approaches to declaring and sharing metadata vocabularies using RDF Schemas[18]. We have adapted software for a metadata vocabulary registry to serve as an ontology server which can be queried by agents on the Agentcities.NET network. The contents of the server comprises metadata vocabularies which may be regarded as simple forms of ontology
